Immediacy of gaming - back to basics
Here’s a suggestion for game developers and whoever stands over them with guiding hands, and to console manufacturers: Speed things up! There is so much useless fluff in many games that it’s often tedious enjoying all the great bits in between.
So what has prompted this mini-rant? In this case, the spark was an online gaming experience. After 1 minute 30 seconds of awesome fun gaming (in this case driving), the wait for the next race to get under way was 2 minutes 15 seconds. This proce... -

Oh Mummy coming to the Mega Drive
It is truly a good time to be a Mega Drive owner these days. As if last year's RPG-epic Pier Solar wasn't enough we now have another homebrew release winging its way to Sega's 16-bit powerhouse in the form of a brand new Oh Mummy port. Produced by the folks over at 1985Alternivo the cartridge contains a very smooth looking version of the Amstrad CPC original along with a completely revamped release that not only contains new graphics but a variety of different modes and giant flying Sphinxes to... -

OUYA - a truly independent game console?
In just under eight hours, the Kickstarter project known as OUYA managed to raise more than a million dollars. It is a new open source game console based on the Android operating system, and it’s retailing for only 99 dollars. It claims to be every indie developers dream - with no license fees, an established software platform and full control of price. Consumers are promised a cheap home console where at least a part of every game is free to play (be it via demo, microtransactions or subscription).... -

Definitive List of Dreamcast Shmups Games Shooters
This alphabetical list of Dreamcast Shmups aims to be definitive. However, the Dreamcast scene persists, so it's possible new games will be released, so if you see a Dreamcast shmup that isn't on this list, please let us know. The amazing Rez (an on-rails shooter), Twinkle Star Sprites (a Vs shooter), Cannon Spike (a SmashTV style shooter) and Bangio-O (a multi-directional puzzle shooter) are not included in this very traditional list of vertical and horizontal scrolling shmups, but if you enjoy... -

PlayStation Vita Hardware Review
Despite what some people think, Sony made great strides into the handheld market with the original PlayStation Portable, particularly in Japan. Its successor, the PlayStation Life (in Latin), is now on the market and continues with the design ethos of both its predecessor and the PS3. Borders Down has conducted a comprehensive analysis of the most powerful dedicated handheld on the market to give you the fullest picture out there. Out of the box first impressions are very good. The unit is...

Appearing recently on digital storefronts, this digital exhibition coincides with the 20th anniversary re-release and bringing together of Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac albums. It's been made in collaboration between the band and Epic Games, though it's also very quick to tell you that it is not a game, epic or otherwise. That, I think, is a mixture of nervous expectation-setting, alongside its creators selling both games, and what they've created, short.
Unless you're one of those sorts...-

by Charles ROnce upon a time, there was a Freeloader. It was late, as usual, but everyone waited with baited breath, because it promised much.
And so it came to pass, the Freeloader finally arrived, and oh what gifts it brought. The ability to de-zone everyone's Gamecubes. Finally, an easy (and cheap) way for anyone in the world to play games from anywhere else in the world. It was welcomed with open arms.
Datel, after many delays, have now released their de-zoning disc. Twice. The f...-

by ArchivesDescribing the greatness of Goldeneye isn't the easiest task in the world. If you were to show it to a gamer who has recently been showered with PC First Person Shooters such as Far Cry, then they'd scoff at the low-polygon landscapes, the poor digitised textures of Robbie Coltrane and the frame rate equivalent to the IQ of a table leg. They'd be missing the point though, as levels such as "Surface" are the forebears to Far Cry's grand vistas.
Which leads us nicely into one of the reaso...-

by ArchivesAs a first visit to any kind of games show, it was going to be very interesting to see what all the fuss was about. I remember reading about the Tokyo Game Show among other shows in magazines years back and having a sense of delight and amazement. Did you ever dream of going to a game show in Japan? I'm sure it's something most avid gamers can associate with. On Sunday the 28th of September, my wife and I headed towards Makuhari messe from western Tokyo, a journey of 2 hours. When we finally ...
