actually Otaku84 - it is you that marginalised the 'ghetto' with this simple line

"For a start, Im not an african/american and I dont talk like that. "

then proceed to say how good a Japanese GTA would be

I look forward to GTA9: Watercolour challenge.

        popo -

Racist. How can you say you don't want to play as a black main character because you are "not an african/american" and you "dont talk like that", then go on to say you want a GTA: Japan game? Are you Japanese? Do you "talk like that"? I find that incredibly hypocritical and, frankly, racist.

        What a surprise

Someone says they dont like the african/american gansta rappa culture and someone waves the race card.

Still thats what we get for living in a country where you need to conform to ridiculous PC notions. Can't say boo to anyone, without being termed a racist.

Hidden packages have been replaced by graffiti afaik.

I'm feeling well behind the times now. I did pick up both GTA3, and Vice City when they were originally released on the PS2. However, I found I couldn't get to grips very well with the controls. It simply got to the point where the games stopped being fun, and just made me throw a wobbly, every time I booted them up. But, I very recently bought them again for the PC - finally having a machine that can run these things without smoke being emitted. I have to say that I'm enjoying them greatly - mouse control works well for me (though, I do know a load of people who far prefer using joypads still). So, these two will keep me going for a while, and whilst the temptation is huge to pick up SA on the PS2, I'll hold off for now.

Cheers, Janski. I tagged 17 places thus far but do I get anything for it ?

Damn right, glad someone else isnt afraid to say the truth.

And Mr Beaulieu, I still don't see how prefering Italian Mafia, or Japanese yakuza culture, (or what they are percieved as), over a American ghetto scenerio is something to make negative comments about.

It is NOT hypocritical to like one thing over another. Theres lots of stuff I cant stand.

Quite why you used the dry smily is beyond me.

Try and lighten up a little, you always seem so annoyed and negative when we talk on the forum, or at least certainly each time you've commented on something Ive said.
Smile Mr Beaulieu and the world smiles with you.
Now, how about a hug, John?

Why is everyone trying to relate to characters? IMO the whole point of games was to lose yourself in a few hours(days, months year). I'm never going to be part of the Mafia, gangsta etc culture, and never relate to such people. But the GTA games are a form of escapism, where i can pretend for a bit to be a gangsta.

which negative comments have been said due to you liking italian mafia (though shouldn't this be sicilain mafia?) or japanese yakuza?

what i found fault with was this comment ...

"For a start, Im not an african/american and I dont talk like that." ....

you have already stated that 'ghetto culture' is not a race thing .. and yet you highlighted the afro-american characters ... and putting 'i don't talk like that' in the sentence comes across as abusive, whether you meant it to or not.

rather than view the game as 'ghetto' culture, i see it more as a media representation of inner-city West Coast style - as seen in various movies and countless hip-hop video's ... and correct me if i am wrong but hasn't Japanese youth embraced 'hip-hop' culture (Japan has a vibrant hip-hop scene) so wouldn't some of the things you don't 'get' be in a Japanese GTA?

                      Comment

Well personally, call me racist or not, but i've had to turn on the subtitles as at parts i couldnt understand a word of what was being said.

Hip hop culture stems from african/americans and don't pretend it doesn't. It's not racist saying so, because it's true...

Just because you got owned by Stu Campbell doesn't mean you can now be a self-righteous bigot too.

I was just about to post the exact same thing. . . anyone know?

                              1. Anyone expecting a vast improvement in graphics must be crazy. The game is doing fantastic things with the hardware, even pushing it to the limits in some instances.

                              2. If you don't like the whole black gangsta vibe, don't buy the game. I didn't buy Def Jam games, because I prefer Tekken etc...

                              3. The game is just a different flavour of GTA, as was ViceCity. Rockstar should be able to really push the genre further with the PS3. A more diverse game, which caters for a broader spectrum of gamers is whats needed. The ability to create and become a character that appeals to your taste would be nice, aswell as more choice when it comes to how you are perceived in the game world.

At the end of the day, I will be enjoying this new title for what it is doing now, I know the future will bring better titles, but for the moment this is quite a breathtaking achievement and the Top Dawg of the genre.

hits the nail on the head. saying you don't like game characters because they don't talk like you is racist, and being hypocritical about a japanese themed game is just stupid. no games characters are ever like me and that's a good thing. if they were the games would be ****

you (otaku) are the one who should lighten up and stop criticising a culture just because you don't belong to it. it's just a game.
