Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas

Since the initial thread was removed as it didn't "qualify the critera set for first play impressions", I thought I would start a new one.

Ive decided to be detailed in my first play in order to satisfy all the demands set onto a poster by the site, and to comply with the site rules so here goes.

    1. Got the game at 09.45, in a silver envelope from Gameplay.
    2. Placed the game into my Silver PS2 unit, which I got to replace the goosed Chipped Aqua one last week.
    3. Was welcomed by the familiar PS2 logo, which was followed by the Rockstar Games, and Rockstar North icons being sprayed onto the screen.
    4. The game begins proper, again like GTA3, and VC the game opens up straight away. Note in order for the first play to commence, I had picked up my joypad.
    5. The introduction of the game is good, I didnt realise Samuel L was part of the voice actors of the game. It sets the basic scene, and the thin story behind the game.
    6. After this point you are in completely familar territory and if you have played gta3, or vc then you will have no problems settling down to the action.
    7. The "RPG" system is slowly introduced via cell phone calls which suggest u go to the gym, buy new clothes etc to improve ur standing in the hood.
    8. The gym works pretty well, and u can change the build of ur character, once you have reached a certain level the opportunity to learn new moves opens up.
    9. The remainder of the time playing was spent on motorbikes, cars, and doing the first series of basic missions.

As I said in the original thread if you like the previous two ps2 games then you will like this. The rpg element is new, but its too early to see how it actually influences the gameplay.

The setting is hard to relate to, as it is very much gangsta LA of the 90s. Again as I said in the other thread it is slightly off putting, as the characters are hard to "warm" too. Also it at times is very hard to understand what they are saying due to the "cool" gangsta style of conversation, and overall culture.

Hard to relate to? hard to understand? Didn't you watch any movies when you were younger? lol

It's like a big combo of Boyz n' the hood, Menace II Society and Do the Right Thing...

I 'll get bollocked for this from the moderators but have potsed the below in another forum by mistake!

So how much have all the mags been paid for 99%, 9.9 etc reviews.

I have played this now for 4 hours and it even I was taken back by the lauguage. But aside from that I feel no connection witht he subject matter of the 'hoods' in west coast USA in the 90's. Most of the dialogue is way too gutterall for most UK tastes.

Gameplay wise, I am underwhelmed. The sequence of dialogue, get task, do something (beat up etc) get dialogue, do something repeat is not a step forward, nor is it really that engaging or fun.

No doubt I will be in the minoirty to those who will either convince themselves this is best game ever, or will get off on the 'hood' stuff. But for me it's going back if things don't improve.

Graphically it is good, there is pop up sometimes. Music is cool, but I can buy a cd for that!

As for the mag reviews, they are getting silly now, agreeing to embargos is one thing, but it these sccores really do smell of bought scores.

          Reservoir.. what?

                I completely agree with you.

I went to Game last night for the event like thing that was going on, over 100 people turned up waiting to get a copy.

But after a few hours play I realize its more of the same and its dissapointing.

Unless it gets better I cannot see how its been getting 9.9/10 etc.

The extra rpg elements like weight training seem so tagged on, bit naff really.

Anyway I guess it will probably get better, bit early to tell how good it is.

That does seem a bit extreme after all quite a few people got their copy through the post on Wednesday from GAME, and people did wait until after midnight last night to start posting.

Absolutely. It's not a bad game (I too have played it for around 4 hours) but so far it does seem that it is pretty much the same as the first 2 games.

I think the eating/gym food to gain energy/muscle is stupid. I can't really be bothered to get a pizza or go tot he gym or to cut my hair etc.

I've played about 20 minutes so far. Pretty good just I can't see any real improvement over Vice City, the game plays identical. Can't wait to get on another part of the map cos the one to start on seems poor. Can't wait to try out the aircraft!

Thats the thing, early stuff in the game is just plain boring, and we have all played the previous games.

We wanna be able to do everything from the start, none of this build up stuff for noobs.

First impressions are making GTA sound like Fable, too much time spend adding customisation options and not enough spent on the "core" game.

Played for about 2 hours so far.

The pace is pretty slow to start with, the missions too easy/boring, but you have to consider this might be a first buy for someone.

Not sure yet whether the added RPG elements (and I HATE RPGs) will add anything to the game, or whether they will become a distraction/annoyance.

Vehicle handling seems a little rougher than previous games, may just be the crap cars I'm jacking?

The 'gangsta' talk is a little wearing, especially if you're not part of the Hip/Hop generation. Like a cheap blue comedian, too much swearing for the sake of it ends up losing focus and impact (what do you mean, STFU )

If you've never seen/played before this will blow you away, if not it appears on the surface to be much the same as previous games. That for me is a good thing, I must say though that Vice City has the edge music wise, but that's probably due to me being 36 and not 12.

Thats a little harsh, the sound track is excellent with a wide range of styles.
