    F.E.A.R. (pc)

    Boxart

    Release Dates:

    Out now in all territories

    Synopsis

F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) is an intense combat experience with rich atmosphere and an engaging story presented entirely in first person. Be the hero in your own blockbuster action movie.

The story begins as an unidentified paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound, taking hostages but issuing no demands. The government responds by sending in special forces, but loses contact as an eerie signal interrupts radio communications. When the interference subsides moments later, the team has been obliterated. Live footage of the massacre shows an inexplicable wave of destruction tearing the soldiers apart before they can even react.

As part of a classified strike team created to deal with threats no one else can handle, your mission is simple: Eliminate the intruders at any cost. Determine the origin of the signal. And contain this crisis before it spirals out of control.

Although its been discussed elsewhere, its about time this promising game got its own thread.

Really looking forward to the single player game - multiplayer looks a bit bog standard to be honest.

There's a host of new pics out now to go with this article.

Looks like a lovely combination of action and Japanese horrors (like The Ring and Ju-On), with more than its fair share of gore.

Its more than 'promising', for me it looks like being one of the most astounding PC games Ive seen. Im more pumped about this one than I was for Half-Life 2!

it does indeed look like a fantastic game, the video of it running is just something else... i've never seen so much destruction in a single room, it's nuts. i think i'll be needing a new pc for this baby.

Interested to see how the horror element is incorporated. It looked good even before I saw that, but done right, it could be exceptional. Gotta love the slow down effect, and particle effects, it looks totally amazing.

There is an interesting interview up on IGN with some guy from Monolith. It's their first 'mainstream' PC game, as they were sick of getting poor sales on their more niche games such as NOLF and Tron.

I do prefer their niche stuff from an artistic point of view, but still this looks great. Monolith always deliver the goods too, they're one of those quiet but reliable developers. I'm sure this will be awesome stuff.

Its by Monolith so its bound to rock.

So Im a huge NOLF fan....sue me

Sidetracking to NOLF - why people don't buy NOLF, and NOLF 2 is beyond me. Both are awesome FPS games.

Everything I have seen on this game has amazed me. From the amazing graphical effects to the fantastic weaponry, it all looks great!! Cant wait to see how the Close Combat moves work aswell.

Along with the horror elements, which looks like some really freaky ****, I think this is gonna be top stuff. Aint used my PC for gaming since HL2 was completed and Counter Strike got boring. This should get me back into it!! My machine ran Half Life at the peak setting so should process this puppy just fine!!

                NOW!!

Absolutely. Monolith have always, always created games that I've loved playing. Pretty much the reason why FEAR is a no-brainer for me, as well as the fact that I'm a big FPS fan. Loved both NOLF games to bits and I do hope that this game(if it is good, which I don't doubt) will set the charts alight so to speak.

Wanted to show this to someone at work, i remember seeing some ultra-high res shots linked on the board but cant find them now. Anyone have links to any decent shots?

I'll see if I can track down some shots later. For now, here's a hands-on playtest report from Eurogamer.

                      Looking good.

The destruction looks totally insane! It's going to cripple my PC, just as Chronicles of Riddick is currently doing.

Time for that X800 XT to be ordered.

What you runnin on just now? I gonna be turning this over on a Radeon 9800 so expect it to do the busines as it has for everything else to date.

Only problem I have had has been with Doom when it so dark... surfaces flicker in the dark but perfect when it light... imagine this will be a problem with this what with all the dark atmosphere and stuff!!

Need to wait and see but really excited about it!!

                              !
I'm using a Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb. I tend to run everything really high res, and with all the flashy stuff on max.

Riddck is slow, I haven't turned on a FPS counter but I'm guessing around 20fps average, but it can drop really, really low. It looks pretty poor lower res, and rather smudgy with anisotropic turned off. Anti-Aliasing is off though!

Monolith games aren't usually as tech heavy, and Riddick is really hammering the GPU with all those stencil shadows. ATI cards really aren't that great at stencils, it's one area where NVidia smoke them.

But still once the scenery starts popping and the particles fill the screen.. I suspect my card isn't going to be happy. Next month I'll try to upgrade.
