Yeah, I know what you mean ! the sound in the game is great ! I also play it with 5.1 and it really ads to the experience, I've played it with all lights out and the sound way up and I was really scared sometimes !

After finishing the very good Stranger's Wrath, I returned it to game in exchange for Doom 3. WOW! I never planned to buy this game because of all the negativity surrounding it. I finished it tonight and absolutely loved it.
I'm fully aware of it's flaws, it's esentially just Quake but nice and pretty(ish).
I know it does nothing new but i just found it so enjoyable, it often is fun just mindlessly blowing away hordes of moronic demons in repetative corridors.
I think a lot of the games successes comes down to how well the game has been tuned for a joypad, it controls easily as well as Halo, probably down to Doom 3's slower pace.

The only downside that i can see is the slightly erratic frame rate, it does get quite a bit choppy, i was wondering if maybe the pal version doesn't have a 60Hz mode (even though the dashboard is set to Pal60) in a similar way to Halo's lack of 60Hz.

      Good Game.

You may have a point there...

My TV resizes when 60hz kicks in and I have to click frame size on the remote to fix it. Doom3 doesn?t need resizing so it must be 50hz.

The odd thing about my TV is that all 60hz games on GC and XB need resizing, but the Dreamcast doesn?t.

I've enjoy playing Doom 3 more than Halo 2, even though the latter is a better game.

I think it's because Doom 3 didn't disappoint me like Halo 2 did.

I TOTALLY agree....i didn't intended on buying doom 3, i saw it in game and thought "what the hell..might as well get it".

Halo is maybe my favorite game and i was SO hyped up over number 2, practically salivating. The only thing i was equally hyped up over was SW episode 1 ( and look how that stinking piece of **** turned out).

Even though the space station and earth city levels are better than anything in doom 3, the rest of halo 2 is totally meh and i was disappointed(and FAR too short).

i had no expectations of doom 3, if i had any it was that the game was severly lacklustre. when playing doom 3 i was massively serprised at how good it was, doesn't reinvent the wheel but its a solid and very enjoyable game.

as some of you said, the enviromental sound fx are nicely done. but i still can't get over the weak weapon sounds and lack of proper force feedback. also, i very much miss a melee attack while holding a weapon.

had to take a look at the pc version and, omg, what a difference the bump mapping makes! the characters and maps look so much more real, some of them a little too shiny though.

it's comforting me a little that my friend spent a lot of money in upgrading his pc to play the game

I had a quick try today and it is too dark and deaf unfriendly for me as there is too much yap yap yap. I wouldn't buy it. For example It ask me for a number to enter the weapon room but I can't hear it.

                Very poor for me.

                  I've noticed this too.

                  From an Amazon.co.uk review:

To cut straight to the chase, the PAL version of Xbox "Doom 3" does NOT support PAL-60 (60Hz mode). Yep, we're looking at yet another PAL version of a top game that's limited to 50Hz because the developer simply couldn't be bothered - and that's especially annoying when your PAL Xbox is built to do 60Hz, and it's a doddle for developers to include support. This applies to the main game as well as the pair of retro Doom games included on the same disc. The whole shebang is 50Hz.
I'm sure most people will say "So what? It's full screen innit?" - but that's not the point. This game undoubtedly pushes the Xbox hardware about as far as it can possibly go and the developer spent months optimising it to run as smoothly as possible on NTSC systems, so the last thing it needs is 17% extra work-load addressing the extra lines on a PAL display. Try side-stepping in a larger room and you'll see the screen update become erratic and choppy - something I bet our cousins across the pond don't have to endure.
On top of that, the fact that the PAL version is 50Hz means that you will NOT be able to play on Xbox LIVE against anyone outside of Europe due to the speed difference - so the other reviewer on this page who was looking forward to playing "Doom 3" against cousin Harry in the USA ... well, sadly, he can forget about it!
It's high time PAL gamers got the same deal as the Americans. While it's great that the PAL Xbox console supports 60Hz and makes this possible, this fact just makes it even more of an insult when developers can't be bothered to use it. In short, those of you who can run import games are advised to go USA with this one.
I believe the US NTSC version is region free, so that might be the solution.

I agree with Uli, I wish it had better gun sound effects and melee attacks (not just the torch).

Pretty meh, just like the PC version. Well actually, I did enjoy what I played on the Xbox one slightly more, but there isn't a very good reason for that - for some reason it just felt a bit nicer. It was good for a few levels, but a few levels after that I was bored - its the same all the way through, and I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere or doing anything different. Some nice set pieces, sure, but I've seen it all before, and seen it done better.

                      Blasphemy!

I wish people experienced Doom 3 the same way I did when I played it, it really was magnificent

pete, i am with you as long as the single player campaign is concerned. the gameplay is really miles behind the times, and technically it's not that much of an accomplishment as it's praised to be! for instance, someone already tried to shout out the light sources? or looked for the realtime shadows of the torchlight? good luck!

give coop a try, it's really great fun. it's even fun playing with US guys (of course only with friendly fire off)
                        because it runs so smoothly.

I've found its got better as it goes on;I'm in Delta labs. All the chatter Mother from Aliens style is really building up the tension.

no.. go to Multiplayer, then Live, then change it from death match to co-op.
