Sure, I didn't have to muck about throwing stuff around, but the game gives you tools that were new to me so I played around.
They get a lot more tougher.

You haven't reached the part where the game's physics truely rise to the fore yet.

Same as Soi, I'm only halfway through the Water Hazard section, but loving it so far. Running off HD, the frame rate has only dropped noticeably twice, and only for a split second, though one time was when four of them freaky-ass cops came busting through a door at the same time.

I have very little idea what is happening or where I am, and I wish someone would tell me.

      Great game.

@Concept: I know, and I'm not judging the whole game just by that. It just was a bit odd. Everyone seemed scared of these guys, yet I could throw litter in their faces and they'd let me (well they'd chase me for a bit then give up).

Compare it to say, Riddick, where if you piss off a guard in the opening section, an automatic gun turret nails you in a second. That sort of punishment made me play by the rules. HL2's opening encoraged me to muck about.

I'm like Soi, I've thrown everything from bottles, chinese takaway boxes, and crates at the guards, it's aces, I'm glad they don't chase me though, for the first 15 minutes of the game I aint got any arms to defend myself!

I know it's counter immersive (the guards' reactions), but the whole point of the beginning, and indeed much of the game is to play about with the objects on offer. For example, during the opening,

I spent ages in the small park outside the apartment block just messing about.

              I went down the slide!
I don't like the way you have to press a button to go up ladders, why is this? Is there a reason, you don't have to on the PC...

I guess it's either an engine problem, or the fact that walking up and down on the ladders using the joypad without sticking to them probably had players falling off easily in play-testing.

Ah well not too bad, as long as nothing is trying to shoot me while I'm going through the whole stick to the ladder animation.
Anyway, seems like I'm slagging the game, but I actually think it's the dogs.

Dunno if it's been said but the Pal version doesn't run in 60hz and ntsc multi region games don't seem to run in 60hz either.

My PAL copy runs fine on my modded box with the video mode set to NTSC and prog scan.

have to get on ladders side on which is fiddly and inconsistent

What do you mean by side on? You just walk up to it and hit the Y button, and then you're on. Stick forward for up, backwards for down.

I finished Ravenholm yesterday and am now into Highway 17. Ravenholm... glad it's over, not just for the fear, but also the atmosphere; by the end of it, you're desperate for daylight and human (even Combine) contact. You get both, and it's such a pay-off.

Highway 17 is great - lovely map design, exciting opposition, the bit with the crane. Buggy's fun, too, though the handbrake doesn't lend itself to skids that much...

For every game that runs in 60hz or NTSC on my TV the volume/colour bar controls drop below the screen and there's a small difference in the picture. Im not getting either of those things with HL2 so Im certain the Pal version is 50hz only.

I'll 2nd the comments made by Soi, I do the same using a softmod approach with a PAL console and a PAL copy of the game, so it must be just you or your display mate. It would'nt display in 480p if it was outputing at 50htz PAL otherwise.

Well it's full screen and runs well.

                                What more do you want?!

Bloody excellent game and absloutly blinding port. I completed it last week and I'm going through it again and it just keeps on giving. My favourite part is the swamp boat section going from instilation to instilation.

One of the best games ever made.
