Sega Rally 2006 (& Sega Rally Championship Conversion)

    Sega Rally 1995

I'm gonna start with this because it's what most of us care about. Firstly, it's been a while since I saw the arcade version but I'm 99% sure it's a good model 2 conversion, not PC. Correct music, smooth, the Model 2 warning screen and soft dip options. Very similar to the VF2/FV conversions so pretty damn good I think. It'll take a regular arcade player to tell us if it's arcade perfect but I'd say it's close!
    Has the usual PS2 model 2 options by hitting select on title. 3 screen sizes;

    A: 496x384 (arcade res I assume?)
    B: 512x396
    C: 512x448

Here's where it gets odd. In 480i, Option C is almost 4:3 full screen as with the other Sega Ages conversions but switch to 480p and things change. All 3 options get even smaller, the first two are definitely 4:3 ratio but the sides are now squashed in on option C, pretty much to the extent it looks like an attempt at widescreen support with borders, perhaps to reach option C's resolution when de-interlaced. Here's what I mean:

Option C in 480i mode with screen set to 4:3

Option C in 480p mode with screen set to 16:9 (Full)

Weird, no? I'm still not convinced option C in 480p it's optimised for widescreen though, partly because those pics show it isn't bang on the correct ratio or how vibrant 480p actually is. 480p option B, although smaller, looks a lot better than 480i option B for example. Maybe someone can clarify.

Anyway, enough of this screen size gubbins, it's a lovely bonus, and I rather like how it handles with the analogue stick.

    Sega Rally 2006

My how times have changed. I really wish this was number one on Sega's priority list. As it is, SR 2006 can't help but feel like a game knocked-up with the Initial D engine in someones spare time.

No 480p here strangely, or DPLII, although it is widescreen. Very grainly looking though, with truly awful pop up.

Still, it has a certain something, all is not lost. Handling is a familiar mixture of Initial D SS, Sega Rally and Rallisport 2. Very arcadey then. Marmite handling. Personally I quite like it.

Only tried a bit of arcade so far and despite its flaws I like it's old skool feel.
    More later.

All sounds suprisingly positve. Hope to post good news when my copy arrived any day now ^_^

That said, I am one who felt SR2 got more critisism than it deserved (though Sega should be lynched for the inexcusable Dreamcast port... there was no reason for it to be anything but 60fps arcade quality).

Yeah, the grainy-ness is mostly 'cos it's a bit over-textured without any of the nicer filtering from an Xbox title (for example; I'm not a fan of filtering but when it's done well, like Rallisport 2, it's nigh-on perfick).

How's about the different cars, anything of Pug quality (from SR2?) Not got the game yet, should hopefully (touches wood, you know) be 'ere tomorrow.

oi you! that was a model3 game squeezed onto naomi-like hardware, just like vf3. it could've been worse...

it was a model 3 game ported to PC then ported from PC using Windows CE (which makes it impossible to get the most out of the DC anyway) and was severely rushed. Sega Rally 2 could have been a HELL of alot better on DC and I think everybody knows that :P I still enjoyed it tho :$ was jus a shame about the ****e frame rate (or severely compromised graphics)

I haven't paid for my pre-order yet, and based on these impressions, I'm cancelling it. I'm not paying AUS$100 for Intial D with a Sega Rally patch with pop up. Highly dissapointing.

I would hardly say 'squeezed', the Naomi hardware was miles above Model 3 Step 2.
Besides, they somewhat cut corners by porting the existing PC game.

I love Sega Rally 2, I think I'm one of the few people who do... which is why I'm somewhat bitter that the Dreamcast port left much to be desired (though I did enjoy it, especially in VGA mode).

                    Mine is already on ebay.

                    Total tosh.

The popup is unforgiveable, the draw distance is hardly stellar anyway but to have barriers pop up and HUGE trees and mounds the effect is totally ruined.

The grainyness does fade away after a few plays when you start getting into the groove. Nice framerate and sensation of speed but car feels too distant from the track, like it's floating. No need for the brakes, the first run through is acheivable with the gas on the whole time.

Pretty disappointing all round really, can't be arsed to say much more, it's not worth the discussion time. Avoid.

Wen you say pop up, is it anywhere near the attrocity that was the saturn version? Or does it go beyond that to Daytona Standard, again saturn conversion.

No idea, never had a Saturn.

It's that bad you go 'WTF is that, laugh, then tut to yourself that this is a cheap conversion with little style'

Seriously though, I'm expecting about 50% of people who play 2006 to come to Sanchez's conclusion. I need to play more to form a proper opinion but if you don't like the handling in Initial D or Rallisport and you can't get over the pop up this is gonna disappoint.

I can see how this game may please some, the faults are just too intrusive for me. It's not as if there is a shortage of decent racers out there, given the competition this one just doesn't deserve the effort required.
