Bear with me here, I've haven't sussed the system quite yet, but first thing that ran through my mind whilst playing this was, this *IS* the Third Strike of shmups.
When I first heard about this game, I vividly remember reading about the Japanese queuing up during it's Location Test to 1 credit the thing. However, everyone who stepped up were completely befuddled by it since it doesn't play like your regular Cave, Irem or Taito shump. This is something quite different.
It was being touted as a fighter-cum-shmup and that sums it up perfectly! Although anyone thinking they can spam bullets across the screen for victory will come in for a shock. G.Rev have really gone to work on the system in the game, so forget about using Boss Mode throughout your encounter, you get two chances to evolve into your Boss Mode throughout a match, although the second your opponent twigs your weak spot and attacks it, back to your mech-self you revert. In addition to your regular attack, you have the Overdrive function; your secondary, spam attack that works on the gauge below your energy that slowly replenishes itself during a match.
There is of course, the ability to defend yourself against bullets by effectively "fighting fire with fire", not to mention using your barrier, although the mechanics of defending I haven't quite worked out yet tbh.
Aesthetically, the game unsurprisingly bears some resemblance to G.Rev's Under Defeat, but in native widescreen and with a better soundtrack to boot.
Undoubtedly will be playing more, but on LIVE I can see some colossal battles happening, even against the AI I was in awe as the game lulled me into a false sense of security letting me get it's energy down to a quarter before reverting to it's Boss Mode and completely destroying me!
A potential cult classic waiting to happen!
