    WarTech: Senko No Ronde [360]

Bear with me here, I've haven't sussed the system quite yet, but first thing that ran through my mind whilst playing this was, this *IS* the Third Strike of shmups.

When I first heard about this game, I vividly remember reading about the Japanese queuing up during it's Location Test to 1 credit the thing. However, everyone who stepped up were completely befuddled by it since it doesn't play like your regular Cave, Irem or Taito shump. This is something quite different.

It was being touted as a fighter-cum-shmup and that sums it up perfectly! Although anyone thinking they can spam bullets across the screen for victory will come in for a shock. G.Rev have really gone to work on the system in the game, so forget about using Boss Mode throughout your encounter, you get two chances to evolve into your Boss Mode throughout a match, although the second your opponent twigs your weak spot and attacks it, back to your mech-self you revert. In addition to your regular attack, you have the Overdrive function; your secondary, spam attack that works on the gauge below your energy that slowly replenishes itself during a match.

There is of course, the ability to defend yourself against bullets by effectively "fighting fire with fire", not to mention using your barrier, although the mechanics of defending I haven't quite worked out yet tbh.

Aesthetically, the game unsurprisingly bears some resemblance to G.Rev's Under Defeat, but in native widescreen and with a better soundtrack to boot.

Undoubtedly will be playing more, but on LIVE I can see some colossal battles happening, even against the AI I was in awe as the game lulled me into a false sense of security letting me get it's energy down to a quarter before reverting to it's Boss Mode and completely destroying me!

A potential cult classic waiting to happen!

A couple of things i would be interested in knowing

How many type of attacks does each character have ? (also are there command moves?)

Are the graphics much improved from the arcade version also any home modes?

From my limited play so far, about 4-5 from what I've seen, could be more though.

Never see the Arcade version, but in hi-def, it looks

EDIT - Looking at the instructions, there are command moves ala' SF, looks to be about 9 moves per character including the Boss Attacks.

Sounds great getting the game in a few days i just need the console to play it now

(thought i would get the game early i had a fear like with g-revs previous games they would soon be out of stock and going for large sums of money on ebay)

        is there a practice mode?

          Yep, there's a practice mode.

Second from last-boss is a bit of a **** too, you can't go into Boss Mode against him, in fact, the boss wouldn't have been at all out of place in Under Defeat.

I'm gutted this isn't region free. I might buy the GDROM when it comes down in price a bit but I'm guessing it comes into its own in 2P and I'm a billy no mates when it comes to friends who like shmups

I take it it's Live compatible. Can you play online from over here?

As you may or may not know, i've bought a Japanese 360 purely to play this game.

                  I CANNOT WAIT.

Yes, you can play Xbox Live play from here. And from the youtube videos i've seen, this is just going to be absolutely fantastic.

From what i've seen, it looks like a cross between Virtual On, and Change Air Blade (Play it on MAME - VS vertical shooter.), and I was a large fan of both games so it looks like this is going to be ?330 well spent.

So no danger of a PAL release, then?

                        Bleeders, get your practice in.

I'll be on the rampage the moment this comes through my door.

@theman... - Just the regular edition I got mate, wasn't fussed about the CD although thinking about it, wish I had now cause the tunes in this are

@Silvergun X - Bring it matey, played against some random Japanese bloke earlier and held my own there, a little bit of lag but it was perfectly playable.

@Eastyy - Basically being the boss just means you take up half the screen then using any of the commands, you can spam the screen with bullets, but of course, like any boss, your open to counters and it can put you on the back foot very quickly.

Got my copy today (Limited Edition)

LE has different boxart and a CD that I haven't listened to yet, plus it came with a free sticker but it wasn't inside the case, so maybe it was just a random first come, first served thing like the Under Defeat one.

So far though, I love this game. It's so bloody deep, you can do almost anything. Shoot from afar with the normal weapons like a traditional shmup, or steam right in with the dash button to use the fighting game-style combos. Plus, it seems using the dash in conjunction with the other attack buttons brings even more to the table, and then there's the B.O.S.S. attacks which are just superb

                            I'd say the 360 has it's first import-only must-have

Yep, agreed 100% mate, in fact, I kinda wish I hadn't picked up a couple other games at the same time because they won't get played with this around.

The Japanese fellow I was playing on LIVE earlier was schooling me in methods of keeping his distance then dashing in with Changpo's spinning bullets/hacksaw type move, took a round off him though, but the system in this game is bloody deep.

Have you checked out the CD yet mate?
