It's been a while since I've started a first play thread, but here goes!
First things first, this game is off the hook!
I love eveything about it! This is not just your regular button mashing game. The game is deep and requires skill to play it like Clover/Capcom intended i.e. with style, just how you would control Dante in DMC or Joe in VJ!
All voice overs are in English, although the in-game text including menus are in Japanese.
Controls take a little getting used to, but are perfectly fine.
The left analog stick is used to move Jean (main character), the right analog stick is used for dodging and swaying. On default settings the square button is used for light attacks, the triangle button for strong attacks, the X button for one other attack and the circle button for performing counters and silly attacks. L1 performs a 180 degree turn which is VERY useful, L2 performs a taunt, R1 brings up the God Reel where you can select from a number of cool special moves. Finally, the R2 button activates the God Hand (Jean's right arm) once the tension gauge is full (this fills up as you defeat enemies). With this activated, Jean becomes pretty much invicible and his attacks become faster and stronger. The best thing I like about this game is the way that you can customize Jean so that he pulls off different attacks/combos. By this I mean you can assign different attacks from a long list to the 3 main attack buttons, square, triangle and X. There is a lot of scope for combos in this game and I've only just touched the surface.
One last thing I have to mention is the game's difficulty. I can see a lot of people complaining about how some enemies are difficult and the controls not being user friendly, but just like VJ and DMC, this game is about skill so there's no use complaining!
