    Dragon's Dogma 2 (PC/PS5/Xbox Series)

I wanted to love the first game. It had the simple ingredients I desired. Me and my band of adventurers, sword, shield, bows, and magic. Running across the lands doing quests and slaying monsters. However, some of the system mechanics withered my desire to carry on and so I bounced off hard. It was a shame. My fave dev/publisher and fave game scenario didn't quite deliver for me. It showed a lot of promise though and when I heard a sequel was coming, I lifted aloft my magic sword and said...By the powah of capcom, I am a flowah! ahem.

So here we are, the game is out and I've been somewhat hyped, but a little apprehensive too. If capcom were to mirror the first game in most of its mechanics, then I might find myself reacting like I did the first game. But no, some of those mechanics have survived, however along with other quality of life, the way the world looks etc, these mechanics kind of land better. Especially if you are a seasoned adventurer who watches GoT in the evening around at Mage's house. Basically, all my fears were dashed away after the first couple of hours of play.

I feel like this is the green fielded, sword and shielded type of adventure game that I imagined the first game to be. I am loving it.
Yes, it's generic in some ways, but some of those systems are classical and need to be there. Back though, is the exciting Pawn system. Basically, you create a right hand woman/man who will adventure with You may load up the game some time and find that it's been adventuring with others and has returned with a gift and even information for quests or chests located in new areas (but your pawn has already been there via someone else play through - cool huh?). Then you can select a further 2 pawns from the Rift. A place where the game gathers together several pawn around the level you are to accompany you. You may want a mage or a thief. Get them here. These 2 pawns will not level up whilst with you, so you may have to swap them out at some point. The pawn system is great and when you are running about the fields on adventure, you feel like these guys are really working. Especially when one knows the quest you are on already. Letting you know, "hey (puts hand up), I know where we need to go, follow me!". Now, you can choice to ignore (press down on dpad, to bring any excitable pawn closer to you or press up to give the go ahead.

I am about 30 hours in, but I've properly smelt the roses on this one.

There are some negatives with regards to performance, but I have to say, I've just been enjoying it so much that I've not even thought about it (playing on PS5). Some people may not like the lack of hand holding, but I wouldnt say it's too bad. I think it's a nice balance of free of adventure and subtle hints (plus there's always a wiki).

So, some early-ish impression there. Feeling like GOTY material for so far, not gonna lie!

Nice impressions mate. I was very close to pulling the trigger over the weekend but looked at my PS5 backlog and sensibly noped out for the time being.

I love this game. I'm in work, I've put myself in the corner of the office, facing the corner. I've asked someone to kindly touch my shoulder when it is time for me to go home...

Anyway, thought I'd share a cool moment

We (me and my trusty pawns were checking out our newly purchased wares in the main town centre when a lot of people started cowering, then my screen started to shake. I turn around and there in my immediate face was a big F off Minotaur. He caused carnage. Not only were my team of merry men/women fighting but the townspeople too. Absolute scenes! With the ragdoll physics you'll find the mobs slumped up against buildings after you've down them. It's so cool.

Played a lot of DD/DA back on the 360, and the realisation that was now 10+ years ago is slightly harrowing. I enjoyed it and was keen for this, but the reality is that I really don't remember a great deal of the detail in it; particularly what the opening few hours were like, and so on.

There are definitely some things that I like in here - smaller skirmishes are perhaps a little too frequent when you're exploring, but when you get to the bigger fights then yeah the combat absolutely rules, and does feel genuinely exciting and dynamic. The pawn system is again a really smart way of having your player base share experiences and help each other out in what is very much a single player game.

I don't care so much about the performance side of things (it's fine on PS5), and the dopes review bombing over microtransactions can get in the bin too. That said the game is very much about forcing you to live with consequences - there's only one save slot, and it auto-saves regularly - and sometimes I've found the execution of this can land you in pretty crappy situations a bit too readily. Quest markers / instructions are often pretty useless - I also had the crappy quest trifecta yesterday too:
        - Time restricted with story implications? CHECK
        - Finishes up with having to escort an NPC? CHECK
        - Bugs out, with the NPC vanishing and instructions giving wrong info? CHECK

Also have since had other time-limited quests where I'm clearly not strong enough to clear them, so I guess I just have to deal with the consequences? Ouch.

One rumour that I've had a few pawns jabber about turns out to be a VERY BIG DEAL and has stirred a lot of folks on social media to the degree that I ended up having it spoiled for me.

WOOF. Turns out the "pawns stop listening to you" is an early warning for Dragonsplague, which left unchecked will have them kill all of the NPCs while you go to rest at an inn.

        Not even mad.

So yeah - lots of good, but also lots of frustrations so far. Will stick with it and see where we end up.

6o hours in and this game has me by the egg sack. Sooooooooooo addictive. I can't put it down. Moments of Crackdown... I see a treasure chest, I turn, I see one up high in the distance. Must get.

I have now unlocked a new mystic Spearhand vocation. Really shows off the DMC combat guy's attention to detail and creativity.

If some kind person on the forum could do me a big favour...if you could hire my pawn (K8CY7F93PXU2) and gift me the Pilferers Handbook item (you won’t loose it if you cloud save first and re-download once done) that would be most appreciated. I’ve locked myself of getting it due to selling on my first playthrough

Can you not re-buy it from the Scrap store in Checkpoint Rest Town?

You can't for some reason, and if you sell it and start new game plus it's gone forever. When I go to the theif guild now they won't even give me it lol

No worries. I'll probably get around to it sometime this evening.

Just rested at an inn, my pawn came back from the rift but didn't see your gift 😞. I wonder how long it takes to come through?
