Resurrecting as I've just gotten started on this after completing the PW trilogy.
Got very stuck in chapter 3, quick google for "hotel dusk stuck", low and behold, millions of people were stuck at exactly the same place.
I'm undecided so far - there are things about it I do like, like the art style and overall presentation, and I'm not overly bothered about linearity generally - I refuse to judge a game-playing experience by such metrics. I enjoyed PW and that was pretty linear. But it was also charming. I come from an old-school point-and-click background and these games are the nearest thing around to that particular fix.
But like Trace Memory, it has been a little unfair in places, that's my main bugbear so far. I mean, the answer to what I was stuck on above was the
pen
and
chalk
. How small are the
chalk pieces
? How I was supposed to see them, I have no idea.
I spent an hour or so walking around, examining everything (or so I thought) before caving in and googling. I have just spent another 15 minutes in Chapter 4 doing similar, with little idea of what I have to do /at this point/. Hope it doesn't become a habit.
Oh yeah, the 3D view on the left pane looks ****e, especially when you get close to stuff.

I've only just started playing this, so won't give too much at the moment, but I've been struck in the 30 minutes I've played so far how out of place the background music is. Doesn't seem to fit into a dark detective type setting at all.
I'm also not sure how well this lends itself to short bursts of play, which is usually what I do on my DS. Still, it's early so you never know.

So, is this game just a maze of trial and error decisions in conversation? Again I'm still early in the game, but just had a conversation with
a guy that I busted when I was still a cop. I tried to play the conversation in role (i.e. Miserable alcoholic ex-cop) and I get kicked out of the hotel. Next time I try, I'm blas? about the conversation instead and... get kicked out of the hotel
.
If each conversation has a right answer, I don't think I'm interested in this at all. I'm fine with some of my decisions making it harder (i.e. I piss off a key NPC to the point that he won't help me, I need to find a way around it/him), but if this is the way it carries on it does a really poor job of giving the impression of choice.
