Scores from EGM are 9, 8, 6.5. I wonder if some people just have Hawk ingrained into their consciousness? Coming to this literally on a blank slate, I immediately took to the Skate demo and immediately switched the Hawk one off. Well almost immediately, I tried them both long enough to know there was only one that I would get on with.

EDIT: And I'm sure Jeff Gerstman did the review... he's a huge TH fan.

        How very dare they!!

Were they playing the same game? I'm confused!
I mean, Project 8 got a better score ffs! They must prefer the stupid goofy tasks & make believe world of Hawk to the realism of skates landscape.
Luckily it seems that the readers have better taste.
Sounds fair to me, they just didn't like some aspects of it.

What does that have to do with Bam?

Bam is in the TH games for the obvious reason i.e. he'll help to sell more copies based on his 'celeb' status. But u make a fair point. He left Jackass to act like an idiot in his own TV projects but I'm sure he'll follow suite, along with a Dirty Sanchez game.
However, Knoxville & the rest of those washed up idiots just keep pouring out the same old crap & the sheep who think its 'cool' will still be dumb enough to buy the game, just like those who paid to see a bunch of grown men mutilate themselves on a movie screen, which is meant to be showing movies by the way not docucomedy/mutilation.

          Jackass? Jacksh*t more like it!

          But thats a different thread.

Thats a fair point IMO. Im a big fan of the TH games, and i've really struggled with the demo, as it just didnt feel "right" to me. I then played the Proving Grounds demo, and instantly fell for the old TH magic.

Thats not to say though that i cant see the appeal of Skate, as i think that if i could just break my own mental barrier, it would be an amazing experience.

Ive not given up on it either, as im really tempted to pick it up instead of TH (as thats bound to drop in price quicker as well!! ).

I'll be getting this one, the control with the stick clicked right away, things like triple flips by holding away from the board a little longer, or landing manual by moving the weight before you land. Maybe things like this will start showing up in TH which has been going downhill (in a bad way) for a while.

Still can't get enough of this. Fully addicted. I'm now a pro skater and the challenges are getting pretty tough. I'm having trouble flipping out of a manual and landing back into one. Takes me 10 or so attempts each time. Any tips anyone?

A really cool review from someone who clearly knows his stuff. Can't wait for this to turn up.

It does sound like he knows his skating, but it doesn't really say much apart from the controls are brilliant. How much has he actually played? Everything he's said could have come from playing the demo (apart from the multiplayer info which is briefly mentioned). I've been playing it for hours and am just over half way through and I believe there's a lot more info people need in a review of this to help them decide.

Yeah sorry I should have made that clear in my comment - obviously more a review of how the game plays in relation to what he knows, rather than what the game itself consists of.

Definitely good to hear a skater's view. I wasn't sure if skaters would actually want to spend time playing this though (shouldn't they be outside doing it for real?) and thought it would be more for people that wished they could skate

Yeah, a decent enough review (except for a few spelling mistakes) but I think it highlights that skaters are reacting much more positively to the game than non-skaters (generally speaking). There was a link to a less flattering review somewhere (even though it still scored 8 or so, can't remember exactly), but from that review I got the impression the person reviewing it wasn't a skater and so was looking at it purely from a videogame point of view, which is how it should be viewed at the end of the day.

Admittedly, I've only played the demo myself -and the areas outside the demo - but I'm itching to play the full game, simply because if it's more of the same from the demo then I can't wait. I think I'll be happy just to cruise round the whole city, finding lines and attempting things, much like you would in real life. I'm not that interested in the "career"-type elements or the challenges to be honest, and I reckon most skaters would be the same. The controls give you that freedom to basically recreate how you actually skate (and obviously above and beyond that- I haven't nollie flipped over many 10-stair rails lately) but I don't think they're perfect- which is totally glossed over in that review.

I totally agree with all the stuff about learning the controls mimicking how you have to learn tricks in real life and how the physics-based system more accurately reflects real skating than the TH series ever could, but sometimes I think it's a little too difficult to get out the trick you actually want to do- tre flips for example, I have a hard time doing them consistently, and I'm pretty sure it's down to the controls not being as razor-sharp as they perhaps could be rather than the game replicating the difficulty in actually pulling off tre flips for real.

He also mentions the collision detection, which he correctly says is very good, but he omits to mention the odd occasion where you react unusually with the game world. I've come across a few parts where you go to grind a fairly tall ledge/wall but as I'm turning in the air the game gets confused between a grind and a wallride and you end up on the wall at a funny angle doing neither only then to get pinged off the wall and carry on riding.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to do the game down- I think what it's done in the face of the dominant TH series is a massive step forwards and I'm as enthusiastic about it as anyone. I just think those of us who skate are maybe a little more inclined to overlook any faults it has than those who don't. Or something. /ramble.

I think skaters would definitely be interested in playing this (well those who actually play games anyway), but more from the purely skating point of view than the "videogame" side, since it is so much more true to life than THPS. Interesting though that it seems to attempt to straddle the "hardcore" (spit)skateboarding market and the mainstream (by being a videogame in the first place)- more so with the likes of Thrasher putting their name in it. But the whole mainstreaming of skateboarding debate is one for another time and place...

As someone who doesn't skate and never has; and who hasn't ever played more than a few minutes of any other skating game ever, hopefully I can answer the concerns about whether or not an outsider can take to the game.

I only learned what an olly is in the Skate demo.

Unlocked the X-Games arena (by getting on the cover of Thrasher mag after completing all the Thrasher challenges) - used my uber skills to win the park competition first time out, but the big air ramp is beyond me. I'm getting hammered out there.
