This may be a "noobish" question, but how does hosting work (same as Halo2? If so, how did that work)...are the 16 player games hosted by Microsoft for zero-lag-goodness or is it hosted by a player etc?

Same as Halo2 it's hosted by a player - there'll be far too many people playing this worldwide come Wednesday for them to manage that many servers.

You can't pick host though they system works out the best host and automatically assigns them.

The system seems better at determining who is a good host or not as it frequently tells you if you have a poor connection or not.
It also won't host to people with non open NATs.

We played a 16 player game last night and it was flawless.
Even in matchmaking you have the option to search for best connection/quickest/your language.

I tell thee what though, I don't feel any where near as good at Halo 3 thanI was at Halo 3. I'm not sure if this is all the weapon changes, or the lack of knowledge of my surrounds or what.

Ninjas are at work in this game, I fail to see how no other game has a system which works half as well as this.

Anyone found the bug where you start a brand new level, then save and quit out. (Just getting out the dropship etc)

When you "Continue Solo Campaign" the game loads, and you get a brief error message which says something like "Respawn-not safe" and then the game reloads, same thing.

The only way i could stop is to reload a previous level, then quit, then reload the newest level.

Strange - dont know if anyone else has had this. Ive had it twice.

Well, finally did some ranked matchmaking today and, amazingly for me, I got the first kill!

Needless to say the first phrase I heard through my headset was "you f****** faggot!" in a nice American drawl.

Good to see some things will never change in Halo-land

Also did a couple of campaign levels 4 player over Live with TommyG and Jimtendo! So. Much. Fun!!

This game is going to last my eons.

                Of course...DOH! What a twat

Is it good at doing that though? Obviously Call of Duty 4 does that and I thought the party system for that borrows very heavily from the Halo 2 ones, and when you get a game against American's if they host the lag can be bad. But I'd assume that the American's would always be selected as hosts because their connections are massive, despite the poor latency between us and them?

I was HOPELESS at Halo 2 and 3 (Beta) so if you guys are ever gonna be hosting some sort of private match (I assume you can do that?) I'd love some pointers, because in the beta not only could I barely get a kill without being instakilled, sometimes I couldn't even work out HOW I was being killed.

Being a "noob" to the Halo universe I don't even know the weapons. It's gonna be a horrendous learning curve, which is what put me off Halo 2. The difference being that with this one I'll be there from the beginning (Argos/Tesco ****ups aside) so at least I won't be so far behind with my knowledge of the maps.

Now I may have misunderstood one of your points Boris, but are you saying you set your parameters to exclude certain nationalities? I'm sure you don't need me to tell you where I'm going with that. It's just if I could learn this without hearing the words "Gay" or "Faggot" as a term of abuse, it'd make it all the more compelling.

Final question (for this post at least)...I couldn't get the save film thing to work in the beta, is it simple in the final game? It just seemed to not like me in the beta! But I really like the idea of filming matches!

Aye, those were cracking co-op games...
i didnt know that you could look up co-op campaign (and single player for that matter) within bungie.net, so it tells you who killed what, how many you killed and which medals you earned within that particular stage.

                  awesome!

Off to Bungie.net to check how awful I am at co-op

I hope it doesn't keep track of how often you kill your team mates with loose lobs of plasma grenades or Brute hammers

In the beta you could save a multiplayer game in the carnage report screen but I couldn't see how you do it in the final game. The only way I could do it was to change to the theater, select film then recent films and save it from that list. This is annoying and what if you're in a party and play loads of games in a row, the recent list only displays the last 25 sessions, and forget to go back and save a game before it drops off the list. Am I not seeing the option?

I've just completed my second multiplayer game and it doesn't feel as smooth as Halo 2.

The Assault Rifle is too effective from range, particularly as it takes you down even when you're shooting them in the face with a Battle Rifle.

I've been playing around with Saved Films a lot more now and it's amazing, apart from having to change lobbies to save a film.
