If the shield was such a non-issue as you suggest, why have soooo many other games adopted it? Why do so many other people on this thread agree that it makes a difference? Why do so many people who have experienced PC FPS love the Halo mechanic? The common denominator against it seems to be you.
You previously said that the melee in Halo was no different and now you seemed to have finally backed down on that argument. You say you find it hard to spot the differences, I suggest you just aren't looking in order to support your (fairly weak) argument. It just comes across as snobbery.
Your argument that other games have adopted the shield because its the best idea, when the game industry is as Lemming based as it is is also a bit of a weak argument. Ultimately you like it, I don't and don't think it has added anything to the genre other than dumbing it down. That's just my opinion. I'm sure a lot of devs use it though because its in a trendy big title and not nessacerily because its the best option.
Anyway we're just banging heads together here. I'll continue on and maybe I will see the light as you suggest I might further down the line. At the moment though all I can give is what I have experienced so far and thats a weak single player apart from the middle third (after finishing it on Heroic) and a multiplayer that leaves me feeling a bit been here, done that, a long time ago.

I personally think Halo has been average at best compared to most other classic FPS games such as Unreal Tournament/Quake 3 Arena. This new one is by far the best so far though.
So pissing limited with the pad though. I'm **** on a pad and it takes me hours and hours of continual play to become re-accustomed. If I had a mouse and keyboard I'd actually be able to aim for a change.

Heroic and Legendary offer more tactical options, but often on those levels it can be a frustrating routine of picking off powerful snipers/enemies, waiting for shield, scavanging for ammo, picking off enemies, waiting for shield, scavange for ammo add nausium. There are quite a few areas of the game also where you have to die, quite a lot, that has nothing to do with clever AI. Its designed that way and often involves you just continually restarting until you get relatively lucky. The middle part of the single player game was immense fun and the levels paced well and flowed beautifully though.
Overall though the poorly written story, badly designed levels at the start and end and the frustrations stated above, for me puts its a fair way from the likes of Half Life 1 and 2 (on the 360 also) and more recently games like Stalker. This is all just imo. I do think it deserved its 10 marks it got because of what it achieves overall, especially in the ease of the multiplayer options and front end.
I think you are being a bit over defensive with the PC Zone thing, seemingly because I am daring to not like Halo as much as I am supposed to. If I thought it was great I would happily say so. I do apologise though if my attitude came across as such.
ANyway your opinion just seems to be the complete oposite of mine, the enemy A.I. in this game is as good as in half life 2 IMO, the only difference being that the enemies in this games all have a far broarder range of personalities (grunts are still quite obviously dumb for instance)
and of course the freindly A.i. does indeed suck which is a negative.
The Story isnt poorly written at all though, it is just pretty complex yet dosnet want to be Metal gear solid so they keep movies to a minimum and just requires you to think, perhapse too much so ( myself included as I would personaly rather worry about the gameplay than what a forerunner is), but the atmosphere and scale of it all still shines through for me.
Youre description of the harder difficulties isnt entirely acturate either, they require you to be good at them, thats all. Weird that I keep going back to Devil May Cry 3, but that game is similar in this way also, most people would probabaly die over and over on the hardest diffculty, but then you have other people who put the required hours into the game that they could probabaly complete it without dying once (maybe). Halo 3 is like it in that it caters for both the casual and hardcore player. For me Heroic is perfectly balanced, I was never frustrated by it, even at the moments I died alot, becuase I knew it was usualy my fault. (besides that bastard bit with the two scarabs I mean...)
As for saying you should like Halo becuase its Halo... no thats not true. Despite them being popular I dont Like the Metal Gear Solid games to be honest becuase I think they have poor gameplay and are getting more and more Fiddly to play (the new one looks cool but also even more fiddly still). I actualy have valid reasons though for not liking those games (which I wont go into), here youre just saying things that most people can see are clearly untrue, and if anything seem to be attacking it JUST becuase its Halo, almost hypocriticaly if you will.Last edited by rmoxon; 02-10-2007, 11:07.

Well I succumbed and bought my first 360 two days ago. Well here's hoping Crackdown offers something new that can bring a smile to my face. Edge 10? Perhaps I'm missing something that I haven't seen before? Plays like Halo 1 and 2 to me.
Gotta ask why sometimes people still sit halfway through the scenery. Thought this was next next gen or something and here we have Goldeneye moments.
Also why I had to go and give one of the jeeps a push and also a tank that was stuck.
Petty comments I know but was expecting the Greatest Game On Earth and instead seem to have purchased the Next Installment Of Halo.
Still fun though so don't think I'm blasting it... just expected a bit more from Edge's (paid?) review.Last edited by iloveannie; 02-10-2007, 10:54.

Also to these people complaining becuase Halo 3 dosnet push boundries, I'm not really sure why you expected it too, I never knew anyone thought it was going too. If somthing isnt broke, you dont need to fix it, you just make it better and thats all they were ever going to do with Halo 3, thats all I thought most people really wanted. Not everything needs to be a genre defining moment.
God Of War 2 is probabaly my favorite game of the last year, and at its heart thats basicaly just like the first game, but its alot better in my opinion for the same reason Halo 3 is better than 2, the developers have just tweaked it to near perfection, ironed out the repetative level design and just given us the best Halo experience they could manage.
