    Wii fit

I bought this in Japan last month, and only now have managed to secure a Japanese Wii ready to play it (cheers to IanE) as it doesn't work at all on UK Wiis (works on US ones though but I found the Jap Wii first and didn't want to take any chances with forced updates and the like).

After an update that took almost an hour to complete (it was on 2.0J), I've just started the game.

I'm still recovering from a cold since Thursday so won't be doing anything strenuous yet, but it looks pretty nifty.

I'm 25 and my 'balance age' (notice a pattern here?) was also 25 which is cool I think, BMI is 24.10.

First stumbling block, language-wise, is the bit I'm on now that asks how much weight you want to gain/lose (it says 目標を入力してください). Luckily that Kanji Sonomama DS thing and Firefox+Rikaichan will help me out. Talk about Wii-DS interoperability

After that, it's asking how long I want to train for (2 weeks, 1 month, then monthly up to 1 year). 2 weeks should be cool, don't wanna overdo it!

(I'm typing this while playing, see)

OK I've been playing the minigames, they're so much fun! I unlocked a tightrope walking one which is really cool - you have to do the steps as well as keep your balance, and baddies come down the rope that you have to jump over. You're not allowed to actually jump off the board, and if you do actually jump, as soon as you lose contact the game ends which is good as it means I won't need to keep telling my mates over and over again not to jump and break my board!

The skiing ones are really great fun. There's two so far - slalom and the jump. As well as turning left and right, leaning back and forward changes your speed, and there's an area where if you lean into it you go really fast, with wind streams and everything

I had a go on the yoga but it was too strenuous for now. I'll blame the cold. Yeah, that's it. It's the cold! I haven't tried any of the other stuff, but it seems like there's loads to do and unlock. The greyed-out yoga excercises look particularly daunting...

So far, I can definitely say it was worth the £40. Looks like the Wii'll be staying in my room from now on...

@ Legendary: You shouldn't need that much room I reckon. The most room you'd need is probably for the press-ups/push-ups. I've got about 6-7feet by 3 feet myself, and it should be fine. Right now I'm using it in the living room, but the idea is I'll have it in the bedroom once everyone gets back from holiday!

I started a healthy eating diet and exercise Jan 1st and I'm still going. Suffice to say, I am looking forward to this..it looks fun, and maybe help to tone up the body.

I've watched the videos shown by the orignal poster inc updates and i look on youtube for date added stuff.

This was added a couple of days ago http://youtube.com/watch?v=vlimbPQW7iM
Seems to sum it up quite nice (well, to all I know from watching and reading, not having the game)

May i ask to the people that have the game...is the jogging competitive? Just i have seen others in the park..not sure if you're in some sort of race or time trial?

Still looking forward to this. I'm already in the routine of daily exercise and some of this really looks fun, and when or if the novelty wears off, I've still got a fitness regime.

Oh it's bloody competitive alright. To my detriment, i might add

You're supposed to just jog at your own pace, but I had this silly girl with glasses running in front of me and she kept turning and waving with a big smile. Of course, being a Nintendo title (although, after the 'spastic' debacle, I wouldn't put it past them), she probably wasn't being cocky but nonetheless I started running like a madman and finally overtook her, after which point (and just like a driving game that has multiple rivals) the arrow moved to this little dog which I couldn't catch up with.

      There's also 2-player jogging which I haven't tried yet.

I had a proper session this week with it. Still recovering so haven't had another one since then (the squats mashed my thighs up). Here's what happened (it's copied/pasted from my rant on the cvg site at some guy who accused it of being a bunch of balancing games).

      My 90-minute session included:

Press-ups (with this weird bit where you have to balance on one leg and turn your body towards the sky. I'm quite good at press-ups and even after the minimum of six I was exhausted, as you have to do them slowly, and it times each one to make sure)

Sit-ups (the funky ones where you lie down flat, arms straight out above your head, and you have to lift your legs up as well and touch them with your hands)

Jogging (you put the wii remote in your trouser pocket and it works like a pedometer - you basically jog down a path and you can overtake the other people by running faster. You don't use the balance board for this)

Yoga (a bit embarassing this one, and I know I'm gonna feel the after-effects of all that stretching tomorrow)

Some of the excercises are a bit goofy, and a few rely on you actually being trusted to do them properly (the sit-ups, for example, have no way of proving if you're doing them right from what I've gathered), and I'm glad I can do them in the privacy of my own room, but I'm really looking forward to using this regularly, and unlocking the later excercises which, from the silhouettes, look pretty nuts

This sounds great! Any idea of a US release date?
Don't look at me, I'm irrelevant.

          I think US/UK have a loose date of APR/JUN.

no, haven't been on it since then!

the parents are back so i took my lcd (15kg) back into my room on the weekend and had to get the crt (64kg) into the living room. it takes me and my big bro to do it, but i was curious and tried lifting it and did my back in.

i now know i can't lift our crt by myself, and may never be able to

unless wii fit can sort that out!

so yeah, no wii fit action until my back gets better

as for the release date, i'd reckon later rather than sooner. funnily enough (at least, last time i checked), i could find no mention of a US release date but UK dates ranged from January 2008 to around September-odd

bah, those ads with the adults talking to themselves! it was good to see it in action but the guy bored me to ****

this one's shorter (1:30) and has that funny voiceover we all love

but it devotes a whopping 2 seconds to the balance board

cheers mr. ono, wouldn't have known about family ski if it weren't for your post!

                            Just a quick go ............

Finally managed to try this out briefly tonight (had to fight for goes with the Missus and kids).

First of all, the balance board is great. It's meaty and feels very solid. I would say that the board itself is close to 3kgs or so in weight and doesn't feel light or tacky.

Calibrating the board (wireless in case you didn't know) is easy. Just press the red buttons on Wii and board and it gets assigned (to P4 on my Wii).

The structure of the game itself is pretty similar to Brain Training in that you have to input details etc so that it can calculate your BMI and there is the ubiquitous calender complete with rubber stamp for each day.

The game is split into about 4 sections. 2 of which are serious Yoga / workout type excercises and the other 2 being Mini games. I tried a few of each - the yoga ones being stretch and bend whilst keeping a balanced pressure on the board. These were pretty tough on the body and you certainly know you have stretched some areas never touched before I was pretty knackered after about 20 mins of these.

The 2 mini games sections use your Miis. I tried the hula hoop game which has you gyrating, the jogging (whiich does not require the board) and also the step aeorobics (more confusing than strenuous). All are excellent fun. You unlock more mini games and excercises as you go along.

Had to stop as the missus wanted to watch Lost but if our family gets as competitive on this as we did on Brain Training (there are scores for each game) it's going to do us a world of good (especially after the KFC dinner tonight )

Had a real good sesh on this last night. Now that I've figured out all the options, it's a breeze.

I evaluated all the exercises I'd unlocked so far (and the fact that you have to unlock them is a real pain - just give them to me already...) and it's pretty random in difficulty. I had my real life personal trainer on hand to comment.

First up, unless there's some Japanese I've missed, there's no suggestion that you should warm up beforehand or stretch down afterwards. I can see people really messing themselves up if they don't know about this....

Many of the yoga and muscle exercises are very clever in that they ensure correct posture using the balance board. For example, one where you start in a lunge position with the front foot on the board with the knee above the ankle. The board then remembers this weight distribution and while you lower yourself towards the ground and back up, a visual feedback shows you if you are moving your front knee (which you shouldn't be). This I think is very cool.

So the first couple of exercises are all pretty straight forward but then I got to one where you rest your feet on the board, lie back, with knees a bit bent and then do a situp whilst raising the feet off the board. My personal trainer said "This one looks evil - you could really mess your back up". I gave it a go. Lo and behold it was super rock hard difficulty and I had to stop because my back was feeling it (instead of my abs) because my technique wasn't perfect. To put this in context, I'm quite fit and do pilates and stuff so I'm not really the ideal target for Wii Fit. So if I have issues, the target market could be in trouble on this one.

Unfortunately there's no grading on the exercises. They could do with having them on different rows. Hey ho.

I tried the jogging and after a couple of laps was pretty knackered and my calves are aching today (because when you jog on the spot, it's all on the toes).

Hula I'm up to 310. My wife has vowed to beat me at this. I also tried it the opposite way to what felt natural and it was much harder to coordinate

The board is super high quality. Very nice bit of kit.

Guide coming soon and maybe even a youtube vid.
