I just popped in Gears 1 for a quick spin. I must give credit to the achievement of epic in improving the game. It is not that it now looks bad, just that it now looks a bit untidy compared to Gears 2. Still, I find that aiming under Gears 2 less accurate then under 1. For some reason, headshots can simply not register properly and actually tracking a target under 1 is easier. I find my controller overshooting the target less.

So far I'm thorughly underwhelmed. Started playing last night and am ready to give up on level 1-2 with the mortars coming in. Using the big gun turret thing and I'm just hitting maybe 1 in 10 of them. It actually seems as if the first 5 or 6 can't be shot anyway - why put them there then?!
Playing on hardcore, but it is absolutely pish. It's nowhere near as fun as using the same gun on the train at the end of the original.

I found using the shotgun makes hitting the mortars much easier since the crosshair is much bigger.
But yeah, I found that part frustrating especially on insane, where it took me roughly 20 attempts before I managed it. It wasn't the mortars that were causing me problems though but
the reaver that followed
Watching that same scene (which you can't skip) over and over again drove me mad.

I had problems too, i finally did it and then just after that I realised that you can actualy cool down the mounted gun turrets by pressing the right bumper, somthing that in all my time playing gears i never even realised you could do. Needless to say it was much easier then next time I did that bit.

Finished it today. Epic in every way but maybe it suffers from the Halo > Halo 2 problem. A more refined experience that has been tightened up and polished to perfection yet somehow seems less engaging that GoW. The combat in the first game seems more visceral, more intense. The larger scale of the battles in GoW 2 seems to have robbed the game of it's claustrophobic terror. The enemies in the first game just seem more fearsome for some reason.

I just finished it an hour ago on "normal" lol.
I thought it was superb from start to finish, yes it has the odd glitches like most games, you can never get things perfect.
Some people were critical of the score for the game,i thought the music by Steve Jablonsky was very very good, suited the game perfectly,he's a good composer and credit to him for doing the score for the game, his music was good for Steamboy.
I thought the story was great, kept you going and wanting to get through the game to the very end,yes there are lots of unanswered questions, thats the idea is'nt it if were are going to see GOW3?
Special mention must go to the whole thing with Dom and Maria, well just superb and very sad,was nice to see Epic go down this route instead of just more gung ho manliness all the time, lol.Check out Dom's expression as they open the casket, captured so well and with great emotion(yes i know it's only a game).Seriously that was a standout moment in the game, and perfectly done with the emotion and the music ect:
Best level, hard to say really,i think the Act with the Nexus, with the large Water Monster thing has just incredible ceiling height and well just amazing distance all around to it,stunning really and a real achievment in the Unreal Engine,i think.
Im glad as others have mentioned that there was'nt a "Raam" moment, that did my head right in in the first game,i recall about 50 or so goes to get him done!
I've just watched "the making of" on the bonus disc, and i think all credit to these people making an "experience" as well as a damned good game, great sci fi and just a really good time playing this game!
Tim Sweeney, proper nerd but genius, all respect due!
I grew up with CPC 464 and things like that, now look at what games are all about,Epic Games = Outstanding Achievement!Last edited by Killer 7; 02-01-2009, 02:31.

It is a fabulous game, really. Multiplayer is just sublime and noob friendly, too. I played CoD4 multiplayer for the first time recently and was like a rabbit caught in headlights for the most part. Gears, though, being slower paced and more tactical, combined with the third person view allows for a more gentle learning curve. I am now in the zone....and I can't wait to crack heads.

Blame Halo for that.....
Certainly is a rush as the locusts close in and you character is close to a knockdown, so you grab cover as all hell breaks loose and you wait it out. Makes me wonder why they took out the squad control as often I have found that Dom won't come to your aid when downed leading to more than a few bleed outs.

Maybe a stupid question but how exactly do you host a game? Is it under private instead of public when server searching? I don't have many friends so cant invite anyone you see.
Another thing is that the Combustible maps don't appear on my DLC list. Flashback either. It must be a region thing.Last edited by Richard.John; 10-01-2009, 02:20.
