I was not getting much joy from this especially with almost instant deaths but I have soldiered on and am now loving it.
It really picks up after the dodgy start. You soon adjust to the way the game works and it has some stunning sequences later on.
I'd say don't be put off by the beginning. I think it's a shame it has so many niggly flaws on the first few sections but is well worth sticking with.

Can you clarify the instant death thing (Without spoilers if possible) - are we just talking the Chameleons?

There are water-based Chimera that instant-kill you as soon as you hit the water.

The Chameleons aren't too bad as you can use the audio to position them. I still die a lot though.

Enjoyed the single player campaign in this, but has really come alive for me since starting playing the multiplayer. Haven't tried co-op yet, but skirmish mode is fantastic! Loving it so much that I'm considering putting off buying CoD: WaW (huge CoD 4 fan and very much looking forward to WaW) as I think I'll be playing a lot of R2 multiplayer over the next few months!

Got the import of this and I have to say so far, after playing the first 4 levels or so it really is just as average as the first game. It of course looks a lot better and the sound design is excellent but it's just not very exciting at all.

The weapons still feel too floaty and the game just isn't that exciting. I've played 3 games this weekend, Mirrors Edge, COD5 and this. The first two I found genuinely exciting with some real 'rush' moments, with this I just feel like I'm going through the motions. Insomniac are excellent with the platformers but as far as I'm concerned so far they've shown that they can't make a great FPS.

I have no interest whatsoever in the coop or competitive modes so as soon as I finish this it's up for sale.

Sorry mate, couldn't disagree more! After the the first couple of levels the game becomes very Halo (yes the first and only good one) like. Massive set pieces, that set your heart racing. This game takes Halo as it's core then makes it better in every way. Loved it, imsomniac just keep on delivering!!

Started this yesterday and got up to the part where you

go inside the huge Chimera aircraft, blow it up and then narrowly escape (Independence Day style!).

I am really enjoying it, there is much more epic feel to the whole campaign rather than the isolated feel you got with the first Resistance.

Graphically the game has improved vastly too, from textures to character models everything is a lot better than the original. There is nothing too spectacular but there is nothing poor either. A great moment that I had so far was coming out of the base during what I think was the first mission and seeing

loads of Chimeran airfcraft in the background

                  , looked superb.

Enemies are pretty much the same so far with a couple of new ones introduced. I like the Chameleons, they are easy to kill but if you can't see them straight away it usually means death so that evens it up. I see a few people have been having trouble with the water Chimera, I didn't have any trouble with them whatsover. It is really a case of you not going in the water when there are a load of them situated there. In the situations when you have to go in the water just make sure there is enough distance between you and them so you can get across. I think I only died once at their hands, that was basically the first time I came across them.

Basically so far I am enjoying it (yet another good game that has been released), hopefully it manages to keep up it across the length of campaign!

EDIT - Yeah I have to agree with The G Man, it certainly has a Halo vibe to it.

The one thing I find it lacks is immersiveness, for me Insomniac just can't seem to create that vibe or intensity with you wanting to keep going forward.

I despise having the control taken away from me, I HATE it when you are moving in first person and it's not you controlling it. It completely breaks any immersiveness and just pisses me off.

The weapons don't feel to me to have any weight to them, it just feels like I'm sliding around at times with only the Magnum being the only gun so far with any real substance to it. It was exactly the same in the first game though so I guess that's just a problem unique for me.

Also, Hale is just boring as hell and not an interesting character or someone I care about at all. Insomniac have said how the main story is about Hale and what he goes through but the character's so bloody dull with no personality at all I really couldn't care less. I mean someone like Gordon Freeman doesn't even speak and he's more interesting than Hale! I'm guessing that might be in part due to the voice actor that does Hales voice, he's feckin awful.

I don't mean to be all hateful as I genuinely wanted to like it but so far it just feels so average I feel like I'm going to have to push myself to finish it.

All power to you though for you lot that are enjoying it

EDIT - I should say genuinely want to like it, I'll finish it first and see how I feel after it's done and dusted!

While i haven't played R2 yet, R1 had a very good immersive feel.

The character had real weight to him (which is why all the yank nob heads online gave up jumping about like a plonker as the character only jumps at a realistic height). Likewise for the walking, your footsteps feel like they have impact on the floor, which is always important for me as it makes you feel part of the world.

And the guns were some of the most satisfying ive come across (after halo 1 of course) Even though there was no rumble you still felt like you had a very powerful weapon in your hands thanks to the great sound design.

No really fair to compare it to H2 (despite its greatness) where your character feels like hes waring roller skates on an ice-rink, as all pc FPS do.

I thought R1 was great I thouroghly enjoyed it but playing the beta kinda put me off getting resistance 2.
Is the single player experience rewarding enough to justify the purchase?

It's funny you say that as I personally don't feel involved or part of the world at all whilst in H2 it grabbed me by the balls and doesn't let go until I've finished. I thought that initially it might have been nostalgia but after playing all of H2 through again recently (including the episodes) it still remains true.

I mean they are essentially dealing with the same thing in aliens taking over earth (though of course Resistance is an alternate history kinda game) and yet I really felt like H2 did it better. Plus H2 is a masterpiece in design, I don't feel like any of the Resistance games are however that's a bit unfair too as I still feel even now that no FPS comes close to the Half Life games (and that's admittedly a bit of my fanboyism as well)

Anyway enough bloody moaning from me, I'll finish the thing first!

I reckon if you like Resistance 1 you'll more than likely enjoy Resistance 2. For me the problems of R1 haven't been fixed which is why I'm not enjoying it but I think you'll probably like it

Sounds like R1 then. I found R1 to be very weak at the start, but later on I started to like it. It had its share of great set-pieces and levels. I wouldn't say R1 is a masterpiece (its too 'generic' for that), but it was just a fun game with pretty fast gameplay.

I didn't like how the levels broke up in the first game, giving you just pics and a voice over. It felt cheap ass. I take it R2's storytelling takes the more Halo-ish approach?

Just got this and had a crack at co-op, forgive me if im missing something but it seems the co-op isnt the campaign but a load of single mission games with cut down gfx.
Single player wise I was expecting so much more, the first game had a certain wow factor - this is just more of the same. All in all a bit of a let down.
                                No purchase for me.
