Oh dear God CoD 4 flattens this effortlessly. Next to IW Insomniac have no idea how to hide their complete lack of any real enemy AI, or set up scripted sequences; I played the

    waiting for the elevator sequence

in the penultimate level the other night and it was hilariously bad. Everyone covering the compass points, waiting for the predictable horde of fast zombies - it starts, I can't possibly reload fast enough to slaughter them, I back off - the horde continues streaming straight for me, overruns me, I slump to the ground with a RSOD with my friendly AI still standing there rooted to the spot, all covering their own spots, utterly ignoring me getting torn to pieces not three feet behind them. Over, and over, and over again. I didn't know whether to chuck my controller across the room or piss myself laughing.

I can appreciate people not enjoying CoD for any number of reasons, or getting more personal enjoyment out of Resistance - bug-eyed aliens versus macho America-****-yeah etc. etc. - but CoD 4 is simply the better game. That's as close to a statement of fact as it's possible to be.

Agreed that CoD is the better game, creates a more convincing environment (by far) and constantly gives you that feeling you're part of a wider conflict. Resistance doesn't really manage either. But to me they're both very lightweight games, old style FPSs. For me they're both someway down the list of good FPSes - the genre as thankfully moved on a little (but not as much as I'd hoped!). Thats not to say I don't enjoy CoD though, and I'm starting to quite enjoy this.

One thing Resistance does absolute nail, and I think you commented on this a while back, is the Magnum. The secondary fire exploding bullets make it incredibly satisfying to use

Just got this for giggles, the campaign is as forgettable as a fairground prize, but the multiplayer is fking awesome 30v30 i love it, cant get enough

Beaten the single-player and, yeah, while it has its moments sadly it's notable more for how good it could have been. Note to Insomniac: next time, tighten the pacing, the storytelling, the weapon balance, try hiring some decent level designers (you're nearly there), write some actual AI in for a change (including some bosses who rely on more than ridiculously simply attack patterns) and you might have something worth getting excited about. I'm pleased I played - and beat - it but while I wouldn't call it forgettable (several of the cutscenes were pretty good, even with such hamfisted editing, and some of the big firefights did start climbing from above average to very good) overall it was certainly underwhelming.

Much better than the original - still, must try harder.

I think I may give the multiplayer a shot, but it's not that high up my list. We'll see.

Picked this up last night for ?30 from morrisons. The single player is so boring and awkward. Although I did enjoy the brief predator inspired jungle/forest bit on chpter 3!

The multiplayer part of it is ace though! Does anyone still play this from here?

Not as much as I used to but the co op is still really good fun when I do get to play it.

it seems like there are no ranked coop matches anymore. do i still keep xp from non-ranked?

I still play and had no problems getting coop in Friday.

Im glad other people can see how poor it is. Its like Half life never happened and Quake 2 is still the pinnicle of FPS design.

I'm about 60% through now, and reading this thread I agree with much that has been said:

                        Its curiously uninvolving

                        the AI is so terrible

                        pretty haphazard.

Later levels get a fair bit better

                        a popcorn game

Inconsistent is for me a great way to summarize this game.

                        ------------------------------------------------------

The Killzone 2 demo has show how much fun a firefight can be, so rather than making a million levels, just give me 8-12 hours of consistant fun, with stella visuals and fantastic A.I.

R2 feels like an alpha, with placeholder A.I and occasional visuals. I've never played such an inconsistant game before.

There is fun to be had, for sure, but you need to wade through the swamps to get it.

                        So far I'd say a low 6.

How did this get universal 9's!!??!?

                        --------------------------------------------------------

                        From Metacritc.com:

                        76 Reviews = 87%
                        1452 user reviews = 5.6/10

If that doesn't stick of bribing backhanding shoddy games journos, nothing does!

Simply put, you just can't trust the review scores.

EDIT: Edge did give it a 6. Fair enough, but they were very much alone!

I'm not sure the Metacritic user score is a great way of making that point - see almost any platform exclusive game for proof of that point.

Not saying I disagree (Though I think a lot of the plaudits for this game are for the multiplayer, which has clearly received a lot of love and attention), just pointing out that Metacritic is the devil.

yeah lol Killzone 2 has been sitting at 6.3 or something for AGES. And its not even out yet! So yeah User scores CANNOT be trusted.

I think the 9s are for the multiplayer. RFOM had zero AI as well. I loved RFOM despite this but in a world where KZ2 is about to exist Insomniac need to either get an AI programmers or stop making FPSs with a single player component.

I loved R1, but I've just finished this and the last few hours I just wanted it to end, I thought it was pretty damn poor overall. not as good as the first one at all. I don't even want to play it a second time, wasn't inclined to read any intel at all. Some of the weapons were pretty cool, but some parts on normal difficulty even were just flat out infuriating. What a shame.

Has anyone played the co-op mode? does it actually have a different story and levels?

I thought this was going to use my R1 save too so I kept it all this time, (I thought this was rumoured it was going to use it) and I had no visual confirmation or anything that it did, so I assume it didn't.

                                Terrible ending too.

                                5/10 for me.
