Just reading this again and I kind of left it hanging on the 'Bonus 2' stage thing, it turned out that there was a hero for 'Bonus 1', but you had to invite him in to your dungeon or he would never come. Once I defeated him it unlocked Bonus 2.

What upgrade paths or dungeon patterns do you guys use?

I've been trying to figure out how to get a good dungeon going but it always seems a bit random whether i can finish the game or lose early on.

At the moment i build like this kinda shaped pattern:

(You can get the dungeon map program on here: http://www.holybadman.com/dungeon/ )

Upgrades i normally try to get the lizard men to max, then the fairy things, and in between adding a level to the slimes or bugs.

You should try the bonus/challenge levels if you haven't already, they teach you a lot of useful strategies. I generally made longer 'rooms' than you have there, you are likely to end up having to dig out the single blocks in the middle and you'd end up with a wide cavern... strategically speaking that's a no no.

I've read a lot of people get frustrated with the slimemosses, thinking they just do stuff randomly.. but they don't - figuring out how they will behave is probably the most important thing you have to do to succeed in beating all 8 stages.

I started trying to do some of the challenges, i can't figure out that stage about digging (i think it is) 50 of the brown slimes. Not sure how to come up with 50.

I downloaded this from the US PSN store earlier in the week and it finally clicked this morning. I was just spamming slimes and hoping for the best, instead of being tactical about their placement. It's now turned into a totally different game for me - I'm absolutely loving it. Can't wait to work through all the challenges.

I bought this today and I'm still at the spamming slimes stage. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. The tutorials seem to teach the main mechanics but with few hints on playing the game well. But I love the idea, love the humour, the look and I get the impression there's a fantastic game here.

I'm really looking forward to discovering it. This is something really different.

I've bought this. I'm liking it but it's got a vertical learning curve, even with tutorials (which aren't amazingly clear)

The tutorials won't help so much, it's the later challenges which give you seemingly impossible tasks to achieve - basically a puzzle game, but solving the puzzle gives you knowledge you can use in the story mode.

I actually feel like I'm missing the most very basic mechanic here which is how best to get the slime things to generate nutrients in a block. So far it's feeling kind of random but I'm sure it's not - I just haven't found the system. Any tips on how to do that or what it is in an arrangement that prompts them to fill a block with nutrients?

Yeah, it's really not clear how you create a nutrient loaded square for lizardmen. I thought you did it by making a circle but that doesn't create them often and if it does, it'll be a rune underneath.

Do you make paths where the slimes infinitely stay in one path?

                          Similar to this:

I saw a video on youtube where someone made paths similar, and started trying to build dungeons where the slimes just go back and forth along one path and it seems to generate lizardmen quite easily.

Managed to complete the game last night, missing about 8 entries to finish the almanac.

Might try that. The tutorial suggested loops but they seem to be fairly hopeless (much like the tutorial in general)

I'll have to try that too. Will that work for the magical types too? Because Belmondo and Charlotte kick my ass and I can't seem to generate more than one of those Lilith-type things.

Do you mean the fairies or the demons? The fairies show up in a magic saturated tile, the demons show up on a saturated (nutrient or magic) tile that has at least three sides not connected to anything.
