You cant really make the wrong choice.

Personaly Id start with a Knight (becuase they start with decent armour) and then just build up the stats however you like. If you focus on building your strength, vitality, and dexterity though you should be fine, I never used magic much while i playing the game besides the miracle that heals you.

I dont agree that the bosses are harder without magic as most of the can be killed quite easily with arrows.

I agree re: not making a wrong character. However, using arrows still alerts bosses to your presence whereas

      a cloud of poisonous gas

Yeah, I was just saying that Arrows make most of the bosses relativley easy, didnt mean it was as easy as it was with magic (again, I havent really used magic in the game much so wouldnt know). Bosses Like The Adjunicator and Flamelurker are increadable easy, if youre stood in the right spot they cant hurt you and you can just fire arrows into them.

I still actualy havent gotten around to completing this, I lost my save game after 33 hours and I wasnt that far from the end, i started a new game with a solider and while I found the game alot easier the second time becuase I knew what I was doing the soldier seems to die alot easier than when I had a Knight, i guess its due to the difference in armour. When I find the time I think I may start again from the begining and go back to a Knight.

i am finally starting to get to grips with the game. well, after spending 8 hours already in the first palace area (1-1) it was about time but i not even came close to the phalanx yet. and blue knights are really a pain in the ass for me. i am still lookig for a way to defeat them quickly. any tips?

also, do all enemies re-spawn every time i go back to the nexus, even if i go diliberately using the ring? and is there a way to safely store my earned souls in the nexus? i still can't level up, no idea why, so i want them to be safe for later.

All the normal enemies respawn when you exit then enter a level again yeah, the only ones that dont are the bosses (obviously), the Mini Bosses such as the Red Dragon on the first world and you will ocasionaly run into computer controled Black Phantoms that stay dead once youve killed them.

There is no way to safley store souls, you have to make sure you either dont die or can get back to your dead body when you do, or they are lost forever. You cant level up until youve beaten Phalanx btw, afterwards the blind witch lady in the nexus will level you up if you give her souls.

wow, i've finally defeated the demon Phalanx! easy going actually. now i've bought a few magic spells but i can't actually use them

so, what's the trick to use magic? and what about these catalysts the guide book speaks of? i play as a Knight by the way.

update: well, i see i have to use a catalyst. but neither guide nor the game itself provides a hint of how and where to obtain one. great. i really keep wondering why a tough game like this also has to be vague about how to actually play it.

There is a catalyst at the top of the first tower as you cross the bridge in 1-2, you should find it no problem.

There are quite a few catalysts to be found, enough that nobody should really be wondering how to get one. A class which uses magic is supplied with the necessary equipment in the beginning, and as you chose knight I'm wondering why you're expecting to be able to use magic after the opening level. Have patience!

As for the blue knights, it just takes confidence. They can't touch me any more, I can parry them in my sleep on a new character.

thanks guys! i've found the wooden catalyst. now magic works great. the equip- and combat system in this game is really fantastic - if you know what to do and how everything works.

how can i replenish my magic gauge?

You eat spice to replenish magic. There are also items you can wear or wield e.g. rings, shields and swords that will replenish magic (usually very slowly). By about midpoint in the game I found I always had more grass and spice than I knew what to do with!

This game reminds me of the Knightmare show I used to watch on kids TV.

Well, thats me now done all of worlds 2, 3, and 4. Done most of 1 (apart from the final boss) and just done the first boss of world 5.

Im a thief, soul level 67.

Such an amazing game, and although it can get a touch frustrating, it always seems fair when you die. Be that getting stabbed to death, or falling from a height.

The boss design is outstanding! Especially

The old monk, when he summons another player to kick your arse!

                            Pure brilliance!

I find myself messing about on some of the early stages to get used to a new weapon/armor set etc, and not really using them to grind all that much. I prefer trying to get through the game the hard way!

Also, a quick tip ive given to my housemate (who has just bought it) is that when you first start to level up, stick it all on health for the first sorta 5 levels. It means that you can make a few more mistakes while you are getting used to the game.

Ah yes, where to put your points...

I shoved absolutely everything into Magic and Willpower (plus a bit into faith so I could use the Evacuate miracle). It meant that the very first enemies in 1-1- could kill me in 2 hits, even at the end of the game but it also meant that I could one-hit-kill most enemies form a distance with a fireball. All a balancing act. Really makes you think. Deffo my GOTY for 2009. Glad to see so many still enjoying it.

every time i start to think there's maybe a small chance of actually finishing this game i come across a new obstacle or mean intricacy. so have i just read about the Soulsucker spell some enemies use against you and make you lose levels. is there a way to protect myself from losing my hard earned levels by this spell?

also, anybody knows if there's a more detailed Strategy Guide available or planned? it's not that the official one provided with the Special Edition is bad, it's just not overly detailed for such a comprehensive and complex RPG. wish there were some maps and a more detailed walkthrough for instance.
