Here's something for those that have doubts about electronic delivery. Steam is currently down, so nobody can log in, and because all Valve games are launched through Steam... you can't play anything.

It's been down all evening, and no comment from Valve on when it will be fixed. Well done!

are you sure? I was playing on steam from 7-9pm GMT yesterday evening(25th October) and everything was fine, no problems whatsoever.

edit: I've just tried it now(6.00am) and it's fine. My biggest worry would be if steam went down on release day so no-one would be able to get online to authenticate their copies of hl2

Yet another flaw that Valve could well have overlooked. They'll need a google sized server to cope with the millions of hits Steam is going to take authenticating the game on the 16th. Expect problems.

Only the multiplayer games suffer when the servers are down. As long as all the singleplayer games on your Steam account are downloaded, you can just enter into 'offline' mode to play them instead.

I do agree however, that there will be problems when millions of people try and authenticate their copy of Half-Life 2 all at once. However, I think the servers are most likely only going to suffer problems for a few hours temporarily. We're not talking huge downloads here, a la the previous pre-loading.

Just a few files needed to be downloaded to unlock everything.

On a side note, less than three weeks to go now.

At least the release is sort of staggered as i think it's tuesdays (or mondays) that USA get their games and Friday here so lets hope those few days are enough to stagger it so that no crashes occur

The release is still worldwide Tuesday. GAME are certainly still advertising it for the 16th (Tuesday, same as US) as is everywhere else.

There will probably be crashes. I experienced them when the Steam purchases options were up and CS: Source was unlocked. It took a few hours to sort.

Hopefully, luck of the draw, all of us here will get the game quickly in the queue.

One thing we have in our favour is that Half-Life 2 should be unlocked 12am 16th November PST, which means those who intend to buy it at the shop will be in bed at that time, as will most Steam users in US. With us being in front (8am), it means there should be less American traffic to contend against.

And I expect most of the core demographic will be from America.

I have demanded that GAME deliver next day at a cost of a further ?2. The game is to be delivered to me at work. As soon as it arrives I will dash home and attempt to register the sod while Fat Nation sleeps. Three bloody weeks - jesus!!!!!!!

I'm trying to play it cool by not watching any binks or videos at the moment.

And I'm hoping San Andreas will hold my attention in the meantime. That last week is going to be a bloody awful wait though...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've got Doom 3 and Far Cry to keep me going until then, interspersed with trips to the pub.

What is the point of bink videos btw? They are outrageously large for only a few mins. Surely a 3 min avi would clock in at under 100Mb+ ?

                        Comment

Quality. They're about as direct-feed from the engine as you can ever possibly get.

Imagine the game running on your screen now. That's how the binks look, in widescreen and high quality sound. They also give a modest indication of how the game will look for most people, running in 1028x768 without AA.

It says something the game still looks unbeliveable though.

There's an ultra-pack out there with everything you need on, but the file is huge.

If you want to pick up the binks separately, then these are the most impressive in my opinion.

                          Striders
                          Coastline
                          G-Man
                          Kliner's Lab
                          Ravenholm
                          Tenenments
                          Trainstation
                          Intro

All the binks are on this months pcgamer dvd.

Worth the price for them alone!

                              Not all. But some.

Certainly the most vital ones are (bar Strider/Coastline/G-Man facial demo).

Also, BugBait is a great bink too.
