    Little King's Story - Wii

    This is a wonderful game...

The introductory cinematic is bursting with character and is so wonderfully animated using a beautiful watercolour palette. The accompanying music fits perfectly and really sets the scene for a passionately produced, quality title.

Things start fairly slowly and gently eases the player into the game?s mechanics. This is a strategic RGP at heart and comes from the inspirational heritage and talented minds behind Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series. Although it instantly looks like Animal Crossing and plays similar to Pikmin, it feels surprisingly unique and refreshing. Since the very beginning I've been smiling like a little kid :-)

The premise is simple... You are the Little King in a fantasy realm called Alpoko - a kingdom that has fallen apart from bankruptcy and lazy citizens that express little motivation to work... but it is your job as King to reach out and rekindle their lost enthusiasm and by doing so recreating a grand new kingdom... You will have to find and uncover money, which leads to building farms and armouries and whatnot, which leads to employing farmers and warriors etc. Ultimately there?s obviously far more to it then that, but uncovering the surprising amount of depth is part of the joy!

The controls work well, though it?s surprising there?s pretty much no motion control, no pointer, no - thank goodness - waggle. A simple press of the A button sends your little guys forward and a gentle press of the B makes them retreat. There?s a few more commands in between, but it doesn?t take long for them to feel completely seamless and natural. The menu system works well too, allowing players to keep a watchful eye on population growth, villagers' satisfaction and income etc

There's loads more to add but the most important thing to stress here is that this is a superb game. It looks beautiful, sounds great and plays so,so well. I?ve barely delved into this wonderful game but it?s already very clear it?s an absolute gem.

Naoooooo, damn your great impressions Adam. I want this now

Interesting to see that the developers chose not to use any motion controls whatsover, especially as it is a Wii game. The simple but effective control scheme does sound pretty good though.

I have seen a few videos of the watercolour style visuals and they look brillaint, does any of that style translate over to the actual gameplay?

I want this game after reading so much goodness about it. I'll buy it after Riddick. Thanks for the impressions!

It is lovely. Me and the misses are just about to watch the 2nd half of Jurassic Park (i'm actually shocked how good it still looks!) - then i'm going to get right back into it. It creates a really good first impression, however things go from impressive to bloody fantastic the deeper you delve. I could have wrote a great deal more initially, but one of the joys is discovering the depth for yourself because it really is quite surprising. Great stuff indeedy.

i too had seen all the review love for this so pre-ordered, have to say my first half hour with it drove me up the wall yesterday and I've not gone back yet

it just felt so fiddly to play and wasn't obvious what I was meant to do

haven't written it off yet but my first impression after all the love was very disappointing

              Yeah, this is majestic.

Just sunk in a coupla hours. I even found the tutorial quite engaging because it's so well presented and charming...I'm a sucker for the little visual details in games, and this has them in abundance. My favourite example so far being the little festival the townsfolk throw after you defeat 'Cow Bones'. The translation is pretty much Nintendo quality too...I know I'm in good hands when there's a Captain Beefheart reference within the opening hour.

Must admit Madworld and HOTD didn't quite do enough to spark my Wii love again...but this could do. It's lovely stuff so far.

Only played this for about an hour so far but already loving it - the art style, music, story and characters all something special about them.

The game feels like something Nintendo would make, can't wait to get back into it!

I'm about 4 hours in now and am loving it, and agree completely that this feels like a Nintendo game. It's like a wonderful cross of The Settlers, Pikmin, Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. Everything about it is charming.

I've fallen in love with their little voices... It's also scarily entertaining sending a dude forward into a tree so he bumps his head or even forward into a cow and kicking it! The farm animals must hate me :-p

It would have been nice if there was a zoom function - It's possible to zoom a little in the main town area with a press of C, but everything looks so pretty and so well animated throughout it would have been nice to get up close and personal whenever and wherever.

I adored both Madworld and Overkill earlier this year, but it's great to have something with more substance. The team behind this have done an amazing job.

I have seen a few videos of the watercolour style visuals and they look brillaint, does any of that style translate over to the actual gameplay?
It does yes mate. There's a cool looking filter effect on the cutscenes that fades away once the actual gameplay starts, but the characters, the environments and everything in between looks bright, colourful and bursting with character and style. It’s not the most technically advanced game, but there’s so many colours bouncing around on screen that it’s undoubtedly a delightful looking title.

Picked this up this morning and have had 30 minutes playtime or so and i have mainly good impressions.

                            First the bad,

The control system is not as tight as it could be, had it used pointing. I find when there is a lot of jobs in an area, sometimes my workers will not do what i wanted them to, this has resulted in deaths

The other small issue is to me it was not obvious what to do or how to control things at the get go. I was wondering round town with 5 workers not knowing what to deploy them on or how to do it.

However once i got to grips with sending them to work all was well. I am glad i played on rather than just giving up, as this game is a real gem. It has the Nintendo charm and polish and gameplay that just sucks you in, before you know it you have been playing for 30 minutes when it feels like 30 seconds.

I will not talk about the gameplay or graphics sound as that has been covered.

I just want to add one thing, its a damn shame that it does not have Imagine in the title, that would have been a sure fire way to get 2 million sales.

As it stands expect it to be another Wii gem that ends up £4.99 sitting in the bargain bin with all the other quality titles on the platform.

                            EDIT

Just put another hours play into this it just gets better and better. Humour is hard to pull off in games, but the style and charm of the presentation just help make it funny in the places it should be.

I have to say as much of a Pikmin fan i am this is sooooooo much better, which is praise indeed.

There is so many ways you can approach the same task, i love games like this that do not have a right and a wrong way of doing things. What i mean is rahter than training troops to do the fighting with the right strategy a team of farmers can do it.

Before i saw the review scores i had watched videos and thought the game was going to be rubbish, oh how wrong i was. This is rivaling games such as Mario Galaxy and Smash Brothers as being the best on the system.

                            EDIT 2 - QUESTIONS

I am hoping somebody is able to give me some answers to the following questions.

                            1) When your workers take damage how can you replenish their health?

                            2) Why do some workers have more health than others? Any way i can tell who has what health before taking them on?

                            3) What is the easiest way to to change out damaged workers without changing out the healthy workers?

For those unaware, you can get this for 5000 Stars from the UK Nintendo Stars Catalouge website.

Answer to Q1, either throw them in the spa or when you go to sleep everyone gets full help again.
Q2, I think its about the more you use them gradually their health will increase (but i'm not sure).
I'd also like to know the answers to other half of Q2 and Q3. While it hasn't been a problem at the moment I'm sure swapping out workers could get a bit frustrating if you have to get rid of the whole team everytime you wanna swap out a woker
