Aye but that scene in particular reminded me of the

Club where Kiddo fights the Crazy 88. It wasn't the club itself, more the terrible singer seemed to be a swipe at the 5,6,7,8's appearing in Kill Bill.

I'm probably reading too much into it

But they're awesome, I love that band.

      Also, that voice actor is

Kim Mai Guest. She's actually a good singer and actor, but not so much in this game. (She did the voice of the lead chick in Final Fantasy: Spirits Within and Mei-Ling in MGS)

Yeah, I caved, and... well, the demo already sold me, so hey, not like it was going to be a letdown. I'm all over it. Cheap, trashy, daft but so much goddamned fun. I saw a random comment on another forum where some poor sap got pilloried for saying he was enjoying it more than Batman and I can - whisper it - sort of see what he might have meant; I loved Arkham Asylum but in some ways it was weirdly lifeless, a bit by the numbers, a bit 'here is our Batman game we have everything you could possibly want in it are you enjoying yourself' where this is a mad giggling fit and a drunken two fingers up in your face.

Sure, it controls really stiffly, sure, it looks like a last-gen game, sure, it's slapdash and thrown together at the last minute but I hit a really bad difficulty spike just now and I could not stop trying to get past it because I was all dive into slide into plugged that guy in the face into rising slash into climb into wallrun into jump into I just took five guys out before I hit the ground with rockabilly thundering away on the soundtrack and Christ, Bruce Wayne couldn't be this badass if he tried. This is what Stranglehold should have been, and it's the game everyone seems to think Max Payne was because they can't bring themselves to admit the first game to popularise bullet-time screwed it up royally.

Haven't finished it yet but it's looking good so far and I don't regret paying full price. I'm sure it'll sink without a trace and the developers will be broken up in a month but hey; just wanted to show my gratitude. Guilty pleasure of the year? Has to be, surely.

          Are you sure?

I am almost certain it was Ming Na Wen who voiced Aki's voice in Spirits Within........

That damned skydiving bit can kiss my arse though. Stupid trial and error repeat over and over till you learn the pattern crap.

Rest of the game is awesome though

I didn't mind the skydiving bit too much. Sure, it was trial and error, but come on, despite being irritating what you were actually doing was just as over-the-top OMG WTF awesome as anything else in the game, if not more so. I can forgive quite a bit of ancient gameplay if it's presented well enough... I mean, CoD's got by on that for years.

About the only thing I felt rather disappointed with was the final fight... I mean, on the one hand, sure, whee, they skipped doing a stereotypical big finish, how novel - but at the same time I felt this was a game that really could have done with one.

Still loved it though. Again, guilty pleasure of the year. I shall certainly be giving it at least a little more time for score attack, too.

Bar the skydiving part, I'd say this was the biggest surprise to me in years. I loved this game from start to finish, perfect length for me. Never makes you backtrack, never forces you into any of the tradition things that devs do to force a game to last longer.

I loved it, and I think it's being incredibly harshly treated by people who are supposed to know their ****.

Has the best final line in a game ever as well!

                    Cool game.

                    Not finished it yet.

                    Worth the lower price tag.

Good characters, goodish story, oozes style. Brilliant. Ok, graphics are crap but I like to see it as a 'style' more than anything else.

WOW on the car chases too.

I really don't get the "graphics are crap" stuff. Maybe it's my eyes, but it's really not that bad!

The graphics are very, very technically limited, more so than any high profile game I've seen in years. The only shader work that looked remotely out of the ordinary was the wet surfaces in the opera house, and some of the textures were hideously blurry. It really does look like an XBox game with the polygon count bumped up somewhat.

I don't mind so much because I'd say the graphic design was strong enough to compensate - if Edge marked it down to a 5 for that I'd say they were being way too harsh, but I would agree the game deserves to be marked down as a result, or have it brought up as a negative. It did distract me, play at the back of my mind, sort of thing. I guess by the time Bethesda picked it up it would probably have been too late to beef everything up no matter how much money they gave the devs, but Christ, it could really have done with it.

To me Wet was like a fantastic starter before a main course.
I missed out on Batman, enjoyed the demo but just didnt fancy playing it right now.
So to tide me over until ODST I went with Wet instead and the cheap zavvi price sweetend the deal and I was genuinely happy with the decision I made, demo doesnt do it justice as it is a cut and paste job but the main game flows very well level to level.
Would certainly like to see what edge said about it to warrent 5/10 I feel it just doesnt deserve that after playing the entire game twice. The music is fantastic and fits every scene like a glove, dialouge is actually pretty neat, Rubi as a character is kick arse and the last line/scene in the game is indeed quality, made me smile at least.
Stranglehold even at ?5 bored me to death and felt like I wasted money, this on the other hand is non-stop music guns, swords and death, no faffing around either your always on the right track and I would have happily paid ?29.99 for it.
Would really like to think people would get this on the cheap or even now and actually just enjoy shooting the **** out of everything.
Really think it has the potential to make a good series with a good lead character too, I will certainly be in for Wet 2 although have doubts that will happen though

Agree with everything you've said Fry, I'm really really hoping we get a sequel! Rubi is a superb character!

While I liked the game a hell of a lot I thought the dialogue was largely awful and the story utterly forgettable. I also found myself lost multiple times - didn't think much of their signposting.

On the other hand while I liked Stranglehold it, like Max Payne, never really felt as if it worked properly. Wet's bullet-time and combo system are simplistic and the animations are dated but at the same time they just flow so well, feel so right - it's like Tarantino reworking Jet Set Radio, milking the arenas for points, working an infinite loop until you finally run out of enemies. It's the first game I've played in its little sub-genre where the special moves and whatnot actually felt like they empowered me. Sliding across the floor felt badass, not as if I'd just made a mistake, and despite the clunky animation chaining stuff together just did/does not get old. And unlike, say, Mirror's Edge (another game with an acrobatic heroine), even when it was the game's fault I fell off a ledge or whatever I never felt that frustrated - I couldn't wait to get back and either try and get it right or try something different.

It has some horrible, horrible flaws, no denying that, but it's still a gem of a game.
