I've come in late to this topic as I haven't been around for a while. I knew nothing about Bayonetta until I downloaded the demo and was instantly hooked. I've noticed that people seem to love or hate Bayonetta because it is so unashamedly Japanese and is extreme in all departments, but I absolutely love it. I managed to track down a Climax edition for the 360 on ebay, payed more than I should have but I didn't mind, I just had to have this game and I completed it the other week. It is one of the greatest games I have ever played.

The sheer intensity of the battles, especially in the latter chapters is beyond anything I can think of. They are so dramatic, awesome just doesn't seem good enough a word. I have not played a game that I wanted to keep playing until I reached the end, yet didn't want it to end at the same time. Its unrelenting action is like all the best bits from epic sci-fi and fantasy films mashed together to create something truly spectacular.

There are a couple of minor niggles like having to go through the same areas a few times but they are done in a way that it isn't a major annoyance. I would also like to have seen a few more variations in bosses, rather than using the same template for a few of them. Also screen tearing can distract a little but I only noticed it a handful of times.

Other than that, everything was perfect. The game looks stunning, with some gorgeous looking levels. I found myself looking around taken by the sheer beauty and creativity on display. The bosses are just incredible, I have to take my hat off to Team Little Angels/Platinum Games, they are enormous and are so magnificent in their design, and just one on its own would be good enough to be the final boss of any other game.

The sound of Bayonetta is both epic and grand, and quirky and kitsch but it is done just right. There are times during the intense battle that you can feel overwhelmed by it, the orchestral score is as big as the bosses you face.

These elements would make a cracking game but what truly sets Bayonetta above anything else is the game play. It is fast, fluid and responsive; you always feel in control and have an almost endless list of moves and combos you can create. It is incredibly dynamic and deep, and that's before you add Witch Time and Wicked Weave to the mix. This is tied together with excellent character animation that is balletic yet powerful and hypnotic to the eyes.

The story is confusing at first but the more you play the game, the more is revealed and if you can connect the dots, the story is not as bad as some have been saying. I am a big fan of Japanese anime, and stories like Bayonetta are common so it's not too difficult for me to get my head around. Yes, many parts won't make sense but many animes do have a lot of mysticism in their stories that are never fully explained.

For someone like me Bayonetta is a godsend because I have seen some epic animes in my time but I have never seen it translated into a playable game before with such detail and perfection. I really liked the cut scenes, not only did they give you a better insight into the characters and story, it gave you time to recharge after a tough battle. There are a lot of overt sexual themes throughout but for me it helps Bayonetta stand above everything else because it dares to be different. It is quirky and very Japanese. In any other game this would be used to make a game appeal to male gamers as a selling point, games that use this tactic are usually lacking in a lot of departments. Bayonetta could have done well without it as every element of the game works beautifully, but that would have made for a boring character, and this game is certainly not boring. You could say a game so over the top demands a character that can match it. Again this is where the creators have struck gold by creating Bayonetta, a character so unique, so different that she is instantly iconic and has a lot of personality and depth that other game protagonists just can't match.

Anyway, I liked it so much that I have ordered the collectors edition of the strategy guide and the 5 disc OST.

Nice impressions. Always nice to see someone appreciate brilliance.

Remember, completing the game on Normal is just the beginning...

Amazon just let me know that the collector's edition guide (and presumably the regular version?) have been delayed again and they don't have any estimated date now.

It's a shame the guide wasn't published nearer to the release of the game.

I've never got on with these games, I loved Devil May Cry but got stuck on a boss and never returned. Likewise I loved the hardcore sword based combat of Ninja Gaiden but I got stuck on a boss and never returned. I think you see the pattern appearing here.

As I got over my failings of the genre, namely the player having to get to grips with the AI and control immediately or die, I decided I can't put myself through the difficulty levels and boss designs anymore and have not brought one since. Bayonetta was no different and after the mauling Mad World got I was even less interested, and you could double my feelings of contempt after my brother played the demo and it looked like bombastic nonsense.

With Edge awarding it 10, I decided to try the demo and was enthralled, it controlled beautifully, looked brilliant and rather oddly I was drawn to the insane plot. With Gameplay reducing the price to a reasonable amount, I ordered it and over the weekend I gave it a go.

There's no point mentioning the combat because it's stunning, far more over the top than Devil May Cry, less nuanced than Ninja Gaiden but twice the complexity of both. I'm never going to hit the Saurian induced highs of the combo system or push the boat in any way, chiefly because I'm playing on Very Easy, however I enjoy the variety of the moves and the sheer overkill of what you can pull off. In regards to the combat, I've not yet come across a boss who is unstoppable for long periods of time so I have no frustration and the scale is more impressive than God of War.

I've noticed people arguing the toss for the story of the game but I genuinely like it and have laughed over the stupidity of it all. It seems like the best examples of these games are either a passé view of sexuality and masculinity like Ninja Gaiden and God of War or a ridiculous and slightly po faced fable like Devil May Cry. Bayonetta is all of these but the Developer clearly has its tongue wedged in its cheek and has decided to outdo the lot of them for no real reason. Normally I would decry a decision to have a nonsensical story but this is something else, its stupidity has a real charm to it and with a character who is both sexual and in turns completely non sexual, it flips the conventions of the genre on its head a little and then decides to poke fun at everything it does as it knows it's completely bat **** mental. It's the first time I've been shown a plot that could have been taken from a teenage focused Anime TV show and I was in approval of it.

I'm about 2 hours into the game and before I switched off I had entered a tropical paradise to collect a sand timer whilst posing provocatively on the switch, escaped a falling castle whilst it was in the air and sent an angelic demon up into hell. And just for laughs, I noticed on the map screen whilst saving that it was Okami's paw prints being dotted around the map.

A complete mind screw with brilliant action and a difficulty setting that makes itself welcome to new players. Maybe it does deserve that Edge 10 then.

Only 2 hours in! Man, just you wait and see what Bayonetta has to offer through the next 10+ hours

I know what you mean though, just a few minutes with the demo and I knew it was something special. There are few games that have had such an immediate effect on me. It's hard to really explain why Bayonetta is so good because it doesn't follow the normal gaming convention, and as a result people may just not understand it. However, almost anyone who has played it knows that the control and gameplay element is probably one of the finest ever created.

Bayonetta is for the 3D hack and slash genre as Street Fighter 2 is for 2D beat-em ups and Soul Calibur is for 3D beat-em ups. It's a refinement on what has gone before by making the combat fast, fluid, responsive and incredibly satisfying. It is so much fun to play and that is what makes a big difference. It harks back to classic Sega games where fun was core to the gaming experience. And it is quite an experience, when you finish the game you will be thinking I can't believe that just happened. It's for that reason so many reviewers have been giving it high scores.

Me too got hard mode now. Finishing it was so wicked. Staying up until 1:00 in the morn. Exactly the same situation here. I loved every minute of Bayonetta was such good fun not too many frustrations either.

sometimes I feel that the sexploitation is cheap and the memorization based combat system is too old school, but still find myself attracted to it over and over again. just got the game guide too (not yet checked out in-depth but good impression so far) and will go play with it now.

if only there weren't the sucky vehicle chapters... still gonna get that rocket achievement

Saying Bayonetta is 'memorisation-based' just... there isn't a third-person action game that isn't, pedantically speaking, so that doesn't mean anything. The combat system and the difficulty curve is simply without equal - better than Ninja Gaiden, and miles above God of War. I loved the GoW III demo, and on production values I have no doubt that's going to comfortably eclipse Bayonetta but Christ, ten seconds in and I was doing little else beyond the same square, square, square, triangle cheesing I was doing on the PS2 years ago. And before anyone protests "Demo! Full game! Nuh uh!" the Bayonetta sampler sold me pretty much instantly, it was that obvious it was in a different league. Ten out of ten? Probably not, but it's blindingly obvious how someone could think it was.

Same loved it. Wore me out though for weeks when Id finished. Rebought it again on PAL 360 and Pal PS3 to go thru again when Im up to it and got the pile down. Just one of the epic games of last year for me on JPN 360

I've been playing this on and off for a few weeks now, and it just isn't clicking with me. It's not that I don't like it, but while the combat is pretty good, everything else just irritates me.

The soundtrack grates, the humour isn't working for me, and don't get me started on the plot. Also this game is most guilty of far too many cut scenes. It feels like more cut scenes than gameplay.

I will play this through, but I just don't get the gushing praise at all. I'd rather play the Ninja Gaiden or God of War games any day over this.

Its a common mistake, this game is all about the combat system - once you've played through the game you never need worry about the curscenes or the plot (and if you have some music on your drive you don't even need to worry about the jpop).

Finished this on medium and although I enjoyed it overall, the "special" levels totally outstayed their welcome. The end was also incredibily drawn out, and felt a bit forced.

As for the soundtrack, choice of music aside, why was it the same two themes for almost every fight in the game? I really don't know how the OST is over 5 discs, as I swear I didn't hear enough in the game to fill 1 disc.

I will play this now on hard (skipping all the ****ty cut scenes). Medium was pretty easy to get through (need to improve my awards though) and didn't give me the challenge I thought it would, so hopefull hard will be at least like Ninja Gaiden 2's default difficulty.

Hard on Bayonetta is about on par with Ninja Gaiden 2's easiest difficulty, its not really a hard game becuase it has so many checkpoints and gives you all your health back when you restart start from one. The challenge is in getting good grades on the levels really, not completing them.
