You forgot to mention the ice flower! Like the fire one but turns enemies to ice, whereby you can pick them up and throw them, or just stomp them etc.

Seeing the desert level made me "groan" to be honest, always hated them in Mario games!

The penguin suit gives you the ability to turn enemies into ice.

I think this is brilliant. I appreciate that some people aren't enamoured with the visual style, but it gets so much right that I'm having a ball playing it - best of all, it captures the frantic nature of certain sections of the earlier games - quick early spoiler

for example early in world 2 there's a level set in semi darkness where there's a constant barrage of fireballs floating your way

It's a lovely game - I haven't played enough to guage where it stacks in the 2D Mario canon, but I think it'll be up high somewhere.

So TWO of the suits do the same thing...kinda!

GiantBomb this week summed up my feelings on this game perfectly.

Aah, das iz brilliant. Plops on DS effort (which wasn't bad). This is just what the doctor ordered. It has slices of the original, SMW and 3 mixed in. Great stuff.

As a plus the Peguin Suit has the "bo-bo-bon" sound when you get it. It also removes ice-induced inertia and gives you the slide ability, but everything fades against the "bo-bo-bon".
Arrived at world four, I'm really enjoying the game. If I need to find a fault, I'd say that the controller is. Still have to try the Wiimote/nunchuk combo, but the Wiimote's d-pad and front buttons are a bit too small and I really miss X and Y for more direct control over Mario...being forced to shake the Wiimote for twirls feels unnatural.

I'm also really impressed with this, didnt have much time but I cleared world one in a single sitting. I really wish it was graphically 2D as im sure it'd look better on my 50" HD Pioneer screen, instead of the 480p DS quality rubbish. The D-Pad also irritates me on the Wiimote and the Wiimote + Nunchuck combo do not help matters either!

                        This is brilliant!

I feel like i've been whisked back to my childhood, yet only not quite as good as gaming as i used to be, ha! Love the style and tone of it all, it's classic Mario through and through. Enough said for now, more to play *giggles like a little girl*

Just did world 1 and this is brilliant, yeah.

Why do I have to do all the levels again to get the toads though? Stupid. Probably won't bother from now on unless it has a reason?

I've almost finished world 6, playing mainly in three or four player with my housemates, with a bit of two player. It's great and I'm loving playing it, but it feels pretty rushed and slightly half arsed to me...there really is nothing special in terms of the maps, the little cutscenes between worlds, blah blah. All the little touches that make a game truly brilliant are missing from this, although we're left with a very cleverly designed 2.5D platformer with the masterstroke multiplayer.

The game also doesn't quite feel like a true Mario game though - being able to just hit A and immediately be invincible inside a bubble is strange, and feels like cheating really. Keeps the pace up in multi though.

only played single player up to the first big castle and loving it so far, its exactly what I wanted in a Mario platformer, nice levels and feels really 'comfy' to play in that you insinctively know to bum slide down hills, look for pipes etc from the old games.

need to convince my son to play this with me, he's reluctant as it doesn't involve shooting things in the face.

Really hoping to get the misses on this tonight....

From a solely solo perspective, it's pure mario-magic. Visually everything's clear, clean and crisp and the level designs are simply golden.

If a sequel were to present itself, I'd love to see Yoshi available for all levels (aside castles of course), bring back being able to fire shells upwards, add those 'mario-stomping the castle' scenes for character and a purely 2D visual style (like Wario Land: Shake and Boy and his Blob etc!) and we'd have perfection on our hands here :-)
