Sam and Max: The Devils Playhouse

I couldn't find an FP thread for this.

Started playing this last night, thanks PlayStation Plus! I had no idea what to expect to be honest, haven't read anything about it and I haven't played too many games that would be considered similar to this (Only Grim Fandango springs to mind, and I didn't get far in that).

Visually, this looks like a Wii game running on the PS3. Technically, it seems to perform like a PS3 game running on the Wii. It seems to have settled down a little way into the game, but certainly early on there were hitches and stutters all over the place, which were completely inexplicable given the visuals.

I'm still only an hour or so into the first episode. I know that I need to get some Demon Broth and a Power Core (I found this out by chance though, because the game doesn't even tell you Max has the ability to look into the future - one of a few instances I've come across already that would seem to have expected you to play earlier games in the series), and at the moment I'm speaking to everyone/inspecting everything in an attempt to work out how I might accomplish that goal.

Based on the little time I've had with it, I think the writing/voice might be the biggest barrier to me getting too far with this game. Sam in particular I find very difficult to listen to - he seemingly has no character/personality (And it seems to be because of poor voice work, as opposed to Stinky for example who appears to be designed that way as a character). I'm guessing they were going for a deadpan film noir style private dick character, but they failed.

The humour I'm finding more miss than hit as well, which is a shame. I had hoped that I might have been able to play the game with my eldest daughter, but the game certainly doesn't seem to be aimed towards amusing a lower age group.

Anyhoo, going to give it a little more time tonight. Hopefully it'll click. Anyone played through the whole season? Does it improve? Or am I being too harsh on it anyway?

If it's anything like the first 2 seasons then it's more likeable than funny. The first season was kind of goofy and something about it grew on me as it carried on so I found myself not looking forward to Season 2 but buying it as soon as it came available. This Season 3 has been another one where I've bought it on Day 1 but it's sitting unplayed as yet.

I throughly enjoyed season 1 and 2 and was surprised just how many in jokes there were in season 2. I'd imagine you'd benefit from playing the the seasons in order

You're probably right. This is the only one on PS3 though, and I probably wouldn't be playing it if it weren't 'free'.

Having had the entire season sitting on my PS3 for months I finally finished them this weekend. Though great for fans I can imagine that the huge volume of call backs to the previous seasons must be making it hard for new fans to join the series by now and the puzzles seem to be getting increasingly complex and obscure. That said there's a lot of positives to the season too. After the first standard ep they really begin the play with the structure and possibilities of the genre and storywise the over running arch that many of Telltales recent games use seems to benefit the game more, making it a more cohesive whole like I imagine the original Hit the Road was.

In episodes 4 and 5 things hit a kind of epic big scale level that the series has always attempted but never successfully pulled off till now and despite the comedic lightness of it all the finale is very strong.

          Ending Spoiler

Though it ends with a typically hokey get out clause for the series to continue on with it genuinely kinda bummed me that forever here onwards the original real Max is dead, sacrificing himself to save his friends (and by that not just Sam as usual) was a really sweet way of ramming home that there's more to him than just a psychotic nature.

Next year is the 25th Anniversary of the series and I really hope Season 4 hits to time with it.
