Well now, another RPG on the Wii...And by those lovely peeps at MonolithSoft no less. No sprites with jiggling boobs here sorry (that's Mugen no Frontier).
We do have nice battle system that is not in the least bit turn-based, but more time-based. Say what? Ok, so when you meet a monster in the field they don't always attack you until you target them and draw your weapon. With your weapon unsheathed, your character will automatically attack the enemy when you are close enough. But there is a delay between standard - "automatic" - attacks. You can use "Arts" (~ special attacks) but those take a fair while to charge up between uses. And you guessed it, the stronger the attack, the longer it takes to charge up. Well, can't go making it too easy now can we? You still retain full movement control of your character while in "battle mode" so you can retreat slightly to avoid attacks then close in to use your Arts.
What I love:
+ Battle system. Great stuff.
+ Destination indicator. Shows you where you need to go next and how far it is away. Yes, you can turn it off if you want to.
+ Being able to save wherever and whenever you like provided you're not in a battle. Perfect for those of us with stuff to do and no desire to sit and play until the next save point (wherever it may be).
+ Restart points are the last "landmark" you were at - and you keep the exp/etc. that you had earned before dying, so no having to do the WHOLE last section of storyline again.
What I hate:
- UNAVOIDABLE, ridiculously tough enemies. They attack you on sight and will kill you quite happily. Happened to me 5+ times in the 2.5 hours I've played so far. Annoyed me enough to turn the game off and come write a FirstPlay thread. If there's some magic trick to beating them I have yet to find it.
Overall:
Enjoying it about the same as Arc Rise Fantasia, and it's even kept me off MHP3rd for most of today. Provided the difficulty spikes here and there can be avoided, I'll keep on at it.
Definitely more Action RPG.
