    Bulletstorm

New FPS by the people that made Painkiller with some added help (and seemingly massive budget) from Epic. I've just reached chapter 2 and this is already one of the most insane games I've played in a very long time.

If you've played the demo then you'll know about the skillshot system - you are scored and rewarded for being creative with your kills. There are hundreds of different Skillshots with the various weapons and the environments are full of different ways for you to take advantage of them.

If you've played the demo then what you may not be expecting is that this actually has a rather good story mode to it. The demo was just a score attack mode, the actual campaign is a proper FPS but one which is full of massively impressive set pieces.

The only game I can think of that is on par with this for set pieces is Bayonetta, it is seriously mental and great fun too. The game doesn't take itself seriously at all and I know some have been put off by the language used, but it is all obviously meant as a joke and heck, you play a drunk space pirate hick so what's not to love?

The weakest section is actually the prologue, despite having some cool areas to fight in, it starts out as a bog-standard FPS so the combat options are limited. Doesn't last long though, and the gradual introduction of the Skillshot system is really well done. Seems to have quite a nice amount of depth to it.

Graphically it looks amazing at times, the vistas are immense and it all runs nicely. Fast load times too, in fact generally this is extremely well polished.

    I like.

Sounds damn cool. After the infantile publicity previews by the developers I was ready to blank this, but the reviews and your first imps have turned me right around. I guess it's too early to have tested the MP?

Just played thru the prologue and love it, at least it feels like they trying something different, which is what i hoped for after the demo as usual shooters like CoD bore me to tears.

Hoping this is gonna be really cool, swearing and all.

First person shooters have been in a rut for a while now thanks to the COD machine. It won't be for everyone but Bulletstorm really is a breath of fresh air.

Something else I didn't mention - skill shot points are basically money you use to buy upgrades. Also, the skill shots are listed with their requirements in the game database (they show as locked if it's impossible to do at that time). It gives a nice sense of direction to the combat as you try and tick them all off. Some show as secret too.

              This is really good

It is really good, and also a much overlooked word in gaming nowadays, it's actually fun.

Single player is a big surprise in that there is a story and by virtue of not taking itself too seriously it seems to work really well.

Loads of spectacle, great controls, i love it.

Tried a bit of online which is basically a hoard style mode with a score target meaning you need to work together to hit the points required.

I didnt like mad world, vanquish, bayonetta or any recent FPS shooter but love this, cant wait to see what is next in the single player.

Played this for a few hours and its impresssive.

Imo its Gears meets Boderlands with a skill point scoring system chucked in, the end result is very good.

MP is a refreshing change too, the only way you can progress is by working as a team to reach the score req'd. No team deathmatch or ctf etc which after becoming sick of the COD is a welcome change.

Thumbs up oh and the visuals are stunning to say the least!

I'm actually, ironically, tempted to pick this up today. Anyone seen the final PS3 version? I've been reading around the net and general opinion seems to favour it over the 360 version but to my eyes the game looked much better on 360 when it came to the demo's.

I took this to be a lot the "The Club" when I played the demo. Am I wrong?

i didn't like the club but can see where the score attack (echoes) mode comparisons are.

in the main game its not score attack, rather the skill shots and points are currency for weapon upgrades and the like.

can't wait to get back to this tonight as felt like the freshest thing I'd seen in ages, I love the OTT 80s blockbuster stupid dialogue too.

Am I right in thinking the MP aspect is pretty basic? Its either the "Horde-type" mode, where you have to play as teams/co-op, and "Echoes", which is Score-attack/leaderboards stuff?

Yep, no coop mode or deathmatch.

I was one of those people that Pete mentioned in the first post - I didn't quite realise this had the proper story mode to it. I played the demo and enjoyed it, and got the feeling there was some form of story mode so thought I'd take a punt.

SO glad I did because I'm loving this! So much fun, intense action and funny to boot ()

I'd recommend this as it is far better than I expected it to be - and I expected it to be great - just not this great!

My weekend is now covered, and I won't be moving onto Killzone 3 I've finished this either! That's how much I love it!
