Basically you hit LT right before you get hit. The amount of missiles and enemies inside the small yellow circle around you determine the force of the counter. Then you can also hold LT to charge it up and add RT to charge it up even more. I've not played a lot and there seems to be a lot more to it but that's the basics.

I haven't fully grasped the use of the freeze (tap RT) move yet, could anyone explain what this is for? I mean, why freeze if you can simply counter?

    Edit: What Silvergun said .

I've not figured out a use for the freeze yet, but using the freeze button to dash attack is very handy for large groups of small enemies as I think you're pretty much invincible while dashing, and it knocks them out of action for a while.

Havent actualy tried it (as I completely forgot there even was a freeze) but can you not use the freeze and counter at the same time, allowing for a bigger window before you get hit by rockets?

I'll give it a try once I'm home, that sounds feasible.

Edit: This CAN'T be done as the button for dashing/freeze is the same button as the counter missile multiplier. Oops.

Not even by holding down freeze first? I thought it only added a multiplier if you actualy pressed it while counter attacking.

Skip the trial, this is essential. Yes, it's difficult, but who needs ten filler levels of hand-holding that you never come back to replay anyway? I haven't really got the hang of holding RB to hover yet, and miss the double-tap directional boost from the DC, but it just takes getting used to. The dash button reminds me of Gunstar / Guardian Heroes for some reason. It's a deep control system.

Another small yet important thing to mention is that the music is identical to the DC version. Which is a really nice touch; gave a warm feeling of reminiscence about playing the original Jap import a decade ago. I recently played the XBLA update of Nectaris, which had one of the best opening tunes and sound effects on the PC Engine. This was completely ignored in the new, and crap, version's soundtrack. Nice one Treasure, you evidently know how to make your fans happy.

I love this game! It's absolutely pure beautiful gaming heavenly crack! Here's a good post stolen from another forum which I think explains some of the freeze dash elements quite well...

Freeze is activated by pressing RT with no direction on the left stick held down. Projectiles frozen will increase the counter for the counter-attack. Also worth noting is the yellow ring around you - whenever you use dash, freeze or use the counter attack, light yellow bars will appear around the circle and disappear in a counter clockwise fashion. These bars represent the time you are invincible, so they're well worth keeping an eye on!

So, for instance you can dash into a bunch of missiles, freeze them when the invincibility from the dash is about to run out, do another freeze, and before that invincibility runs out, activate the counter attack. Boom, big counter and refilled dash/freeze gauges. (You can actually extend your invincibility even longer during the counter attack charge-up, by pressing RT to power up the attack while still holding down LT. So it's possible to stay invincible for up to four times as long as a regular counter attack, if you have the meter to spare).

I've not got access to this, so quick Q:

Are there any story elements or wacky dialogue like the DC version?

(which was probably 50% of my reason for even playing the DC version)

Sadly no . But the other 50% is all here and present, even the music.

Regarding the freeze, I've been playing some more and the main use I found for it is in lvl 15 the game introduces enemies that repel your bullets. You have to use the freeze and dash attacks to be able to kill them (the game actually tells you to).

Anyone got a tip for the boss in LVL 17? It says to shoot a focused counter at it but it doesn't seem to work.
