Only had a very quick look but already I'm under the spell. This game has been made with a lot of love. I know it's supposed to be too easy and too short so I am going to try and eek it out as much as possible ... but if it does nothing more than continue to be the happy distraction I experienced yesterday then it'll still be a winner for me.

played the first 2 worlds last night and loved it!! only game no-one has moaned at me to turn the sound off whilst they watched celebrities in the jungle too

graphics and use of the 3D are excellent and even early on the level design is quite fiendish. difficulty is set perfectly imo...mario has never been about massive challenge but you still lose the odd life trying to experiment (i still want to punch the wall during my flashbacks to "tubular" on Mario 4).

my only problems are my usual moans at the console, made worse by wanting to play this more and the fact I dont want to turn off the 3D for a change. ie eyestrain and my left hand turning into a painful claw as the console size/slider is no good for me at all!!

It's not a top-tier Mario game, like Super Mario World or Super Mario Galaxy, but it's certainly not a bottom-end one like Super Mario Land 2 or Super Mario Sunshine either. It's great.

Being portable and able to play when travelling to work (and while breaks) is one of the reasons I picked this up , that and for Bog duty

Given I pretty much only play handhelds when on public transport I have no issue with the difficulty as the last thing I want is frustration sections trying to make complex jumps onto tiny platforms whilst riding over speed bumps. For me the game falters in having so little content in it. Gone are the days of Mario Worlds 96 levels or Mario 64's multiple stars per stage. But on the whole a great game, my preferred handheld Mario platformer and a nice mood setter for Mario Kart 7
There's 95 stages in this by my reckoning, not counting the cube area's. And the 3 star coins per stage are basically the equivlent of stars in Mario 64. It seems to have been designed with portabilty in mind wth relatively short and linear levels and time limits. Plus it's meant to be a cross between a 2d and 3d Mario of course.

I've started playing through it again as Luigi, I hadn't noticed that when you complete a level

it records whether you did it with Mario or Luigi, and whether you got the gold flag

I had a quick scan on gamefaqs and seems there's a small bonus for those who go through the game with Luigi

SML2 looked nice, sure, but the gameplay was never engaging, everything feel all floaty and indistinct, and you never really felt in danger. I wanted to like it, but never could, objectively.

Still would like to see some sort of remake of SML2 at some point, mind. Always wondered why the Super Mario Lands were never Advance-ified...

Just grabbed this on a spur of the moment as you guys are talking mainly nice things about it. Walking home past games shop and just detoured straight in without thinking.

                        SHINE GET!

How annoying! It seems doing a certain number of levels resets the cubes, got a couple more star
                          coins, but

One cube had Koopa Jr or whatever his name is, the boss character, I killed him, but ran out of time before I could collect the star coin! Him being a boss character suggests it may have been the last star coin... Damn!

For all the talk of easy (including mine), I'm in special world 3 and I'm finding some of it quite tricky.

Only played through World 1 so far but this is very nice, it definitely plays like a classic 2D Mario game in 3D clothing. Mario games always make me feel Christmassy so this will be a perfect game to chip away at over the next month. Lovely stuff.
