Didn't actually realise this was on PC! And as I've sold all my consoles this is great news, might be a purchase next week for me. Glad it looks lovely on PC too

I've only just built a pretty high-end(ish) rig with an 2600k oc'ed to 4.5ghz with an oc'ed Nvidia Gti 560 ti so hopefully should have enough to get this running well!

Just gonna ask the obvious question - as someone who thought Sonic 4 was rather rubbish (felt like the perfect example of an imitator that gets the looks right but missed the point gameplay-wise), is this worth buying? Framerate is no issue since I'll be going PC. I am one who firmly believes that there has been no good 2D Sonic since Sonic 3 & Knuckles so...

Yeah. This is good. Even the sluggish console version is still fun enough to play.

The stage selection is a bit hit and miss here and there but the core gameplay is far better than Sonic 4 ever will be. The physics of classic Sonic in this game are much closer to the real thing while the Modern Sonic levels actually manage to be succesful in (semi-) 3D. Some modern levels are even better and more fun to play than the classics.

The only level that the stuttering happens is Chemical Plant. Its weird, I get a solid 57-60 framerate elsewhere. Favourite stage so far is Sky Sanctuary, its dreamy.

My Steam Screenshot library does them in full size, if you want to have a proper look.

Agreed, although I'd go as far as to say since Sonic 3, I even struggled to like S&K.

Hopefully this'll be a nice drop back into the series.

I'm liking this, best Sonic in a long while.

It keeps it refreshing going from 2D levels to 3D levels, I love playing Green Hill in 3D and at the same time enjoyed playing City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2 in 2D, that one is a great Act.

I've got it on the 360 and so far only noticed really bad frame rate drop on Speed Highway Act 2 when you're running down the building. I think it's unfair that we have to pay ?35 for a console version that runs at 30FPS where the PC version is a better version and way cheaper at around ?15, but I don't want to play it on my laptop.

Anyway I'm getting towards the end now and the only thing I don't like is how you're forced to play challenges to unlock a different era in the game. SEGA always seem to do this in Sonic games lately, you're forced to do something you don't want to progress and play the normal levels. It was the same in Sonic Colours, act 1 was a proper 3D level but acts 2-6 were just short pointless editions to the game that didn't really need to be there.

But apart from the little niggles here and there I'm liking it a lot. It's just a shame a lot of people are put off from the franchise now that they are gonna miss a good game.

Beating one challenge per area is enough to grab the key and I really enjoy some of them. The coin digging one was absolutely pathetic though.

wow. Sonic and knuckles is the other half of Sonic 3 mind you, but when stand alone it still contained Lava Reef, Sky Sanctuary, Flying Battery which might be the 3 best stages in the entire franchise imho. And dat music.

I think Sonic and knuckles is the very best one, just even more perfect with Sonic 3 on top of it. I'm also a very big fan of CD, but it does have its shortcomings (the bosses, lol)

Yeah I would have loved a remake of Flying Battery Zone just to see what they would have done to the music!

Sonic & Knuckles struggled in the sense that it felt exactly like that it was - the second half of a game, and lacking the multiplayer modes and saving system of the original Sonic 3 game made it feel rather slapped together. The actual stages are fantastic though, as others have noted. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my personal favourite game of all time. Which is also why I fear I will always be disappointed by any new 2D Sonic, no matter how good it is.

Still, the existence of unlockables and, implicitely, replay value is making this game sound appealing. The incentive to replay stages was the reason I enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2, for all it's many flaws.

My favourite part of S&K was the music. Some amazing tunes in there. Some good stages but, for me, I felt a lot had too much of a copy/paste feel beginning with Mushroom Hill having just a whole rake of loops, some lifty sections and not a huge amount else. There's a bit of that in all classic Sonics but I felt it more with S&K. Still a good game though and great to be able to revisit Sonic 3 stages with other areas using Knuckles. I do adore Sonic 3.

Still tempted to go for this but I'm thinking I may wait and get the 3DS version. Does seem quite different though, from what I've seen.

I just remember the faff of plugging extra bits and bobs into the MD and couldn't be arsed. I also wasn't overly fussed with Knuckles. Sonic cd is great, but I haven't really enjoyed any 3D Sonic and played them all from the DC to present. I think I'm a Mario man at heart and just felt the new Sonic titles were trying to deliver the speed and pace of the 2D titlea with elements of puzzle solving/slower paced sections, and they have felt far too 'Frankenstein's monster' to enjoy. Also the ludicrous Sonic voice where it sounds like they've given him the 'tude' of an eleven year old. I've heard these issues are largely rectified in the new Generations title so am looking forward it.

Game is bloody amazing and the best non Mario Platform game I've played in a long time and hands down the best 3D sonic since Sonic Adv 1. The graphics are stunning with tons of little touches (love the water effect on Chemical zone) the presentation 1st class and its nice to see a game ready to make fun of its self and not take it's self too seriously , the music is nice and some of the level design quite inspired and at last Sonic Team have nailed down the controls and jumping in a 3D game (so much improved over even the latest demo)

Pretty awesome stuff and the Collectors Edition is one of the better ones too.

So how many levels are in this new game?

Anyone know how to access the Casino Night Zone bonus content? I redeemed the code on Xbox 360 but can't find how to access it. I think it's some kind of mini game.
