Day Z : Arma II Mod review

Have played a few hours of this now. Not played with any friends at all so far but intend to soon so will write a follow up later on. This is just too good not to have a write up right now though.

Essentially this is The Walking Dead : The videogame. But not like the actual walking dead videogame. This one is a simulation.

The games takes place on a 225 square kilometre map of a fictional island called Chernerus (I think). I'll take you through my first few hours. I played at about 9pm and chose a UK server. After several minutes of waiting for some server or other to spawn me I found myself on a beach, at night, alone. A quick look at my gear sees I have a pistol with about 6 x 8 round clips, some flares, a bit of food, water, some bandages and painkillers. It's pitch black so I lit and threw a flare so I could see what was going on. I walked along the beach for a bit before until I spotted another 'survivor'. He had his pistol pointed at me. I pointed mine at him and for a minute we just stood there. Then I asked him if he wanted to team up. He agreed and off we went inland, providing some kind of cover for each other. We reached what looked like some kind of quarry mining facility. I climbed to the top of a building while he wondered around below. I got too close to the edge, fell off and died. That's it game over. Death is permanent here. I quit that server and managed to get onto a US server. This time I spawned in daylight (because 9:30pm our time is still daylight in Virginia - that's how day and night works in this game).

This time I was on my own and headed inland, searched a few buildings, found some food and a new windscreen for a Jeep (more on this later). Night began to draw in so I headed for some light I could see. I was an abandoned... something. Warehouse, car park? I dunno. There was a crane there too. Then, behind me I heard frantic groaning, I turned round and saw a zombie RUNNING at me. We're talking 28 days later speed zombies. I sped up the ladder to the top of the crane. All the while the sheer terror in my character's voice could be heard as well as that of the frantic, hungry zombie behind me. I emerged from the ladder, ran round the back and trained my pistol at the top of the ladder and pulled the trigger when the zombie's head appeared. This was one of the greatest moments of my gaming career. This is something a bit special. I threw a flare to the ground to see if my gunshot had alerted any other zombies. After a few minutes I ventured back down and entered the building opposite. The light from the building was coming from a burning oil drum. The place was abandoned and there was nothing useful there but I suddenly saw another survivor. I hid in the shadows (some players will kill you on sight, there's no real way to know if another player wants to team up or kill you for your gear). After he'd left I went back down myself and started walking toward what looked like a small town. I heard a zombie behind me; it hadn't spotted me so I carried on but then I walked right into a pack of about 6. My character began to panic as I ran off into the darkness, followed by an ever growing herd of Zs. I spotted a ladder, climbed it, ran along a walkway and span round. No zombies. They hadn't climbed up after me. I chucked a flare down and started to headshot them. Until I ran out of ammo...

My character is currently on a walkway with half a dozen undead below him, no ammo, no more bandages and with severe blood loss. He has less equipment than when he spawned and is in much worse shape. Respawning would seem the sensible thing to do but I don't want to do that. I want to survive.

I urge anyone who has the means to try this out. It's an experience like no other.

Wow. What a brilliant experience. The atmosphere is PERFECT. Some servers are buggy but when it works, oh god...

With no idea where I was, or what I was doing, I found myself starting off in what looked like some kind of derelict factory, or station of some description. The outskirts of a town people in the game were refering to as 'Cherno'. As I joined on US timing, it was day, visibility not a problem.

It was quiet - Extremely quiet. Not the single sound of anyone else, human or zombie. I took a casual jog and started to explore. There were some large buildings all around that needed looking into, and a town in the distance I could see.

Turning a corner, I immediately focused down my pistol sights only to find what looked like a man, standing completely still, holding a gun in his hand... A glitched out zombie. No noise, no movement. They were littered everywhere... This place was safe to examine, and loot. A few cans of Pepsi and a tin of Sardines later, I was off on my trek to the city.

On the way, no contact at all. The day made it easy to see anybody moving around, and made it easy to stay well out of harms way. The silence made it worse though, something was bound to happen. I made my way to what looked like a safe haven - An international hotel with a wire fence. Inside, loot everywhere... Ammunition, food, drink, bandages, the lot.

Still with no contact, I decided to rest here and try UK timing. It would've been all too easy to just stay there and eat, drink and be merry. Something definitely wasn't right...

Turns out I got lucky with that little looting spree. As soon as I resumed from this point, everything was pitch black, all the loot in the building was gone, and the sound of zombie groaning was everywhere. Global chat was buzzing away.

    "Anybody in Cherno?"

    "No ammo, is anybody nearby?"

Funnily enough, those messages were quickly followed by a notification of their death. Bandits. And here I was, laying in a nice open hotel floor with enough gear to survive for a long time. I was one giant living loot drop.

Now I REALLY couldn't stay here forever. I lit a flare to see exactly what was going on and where I was. Horrible mistake. I'm immediately spotted and a zombie comes charging in from a distance... It took that distance for me to figure out exactly how to aim down the sight of my gun, and as soon as he reached striking distance,

Bam. One shot straight to the skull, body flopping forwards. He was even kind enough to bring me another tin of sardines while he was at it. I took my flare and pegged it with no idea whatsoever where I was going.

Another zombie. Two zombies. Two rounds fired, two perfect headshots, two corpses laying on the ground in front of me. I felt quite pleased with myself about that, especially considering they lunge themselves at you like there's no tomorrow. Someone was watching, and pointing their gun directly at me.

Straight on VoIP. "Friendly, friendly. Don't shoot me". He didn't, he put his rifle back on his back, and just came over. Benny, his name was. We stuck together and started exploring the buildings around us.

"There are some weapons here, ammo here too. Don't worry about food and drink, I have plenty of that. It's blood packs I need..." He was awfully helpful. Granted he could've shot me in the back of the head at any point, but he didn't SEEM like he was going to...

"People talking about the church. There's something in there. It's near, we should check it out." He gave a couple of personal chemlights so I wouldn't light up our location like a christmas tree, and off we went. As soon as we kick off though...

Bam. Bam. Bam bam bam. Off in the distance, coupled with the sound of zombies smacking someone around. There was someone nearby, and he was in some deep ****. By the time we figured out where he was, he was dead. His corpse was there on the ground, and I genuinly felt kinda sorry. We could've saved him if we'd have been a bit sooner, but instead we looted his corpse and carried on our trek.

The church didn't hold anything interesting, but we did find a Winchester and some shells. Apparently, there was also a hospital nearby, and seeing as Benny needed those blood packs...

The moment we step out... A horde. We drew attention to ourselves. Struggling to pull out my weapon, they smacked me to the ground, bones broken, bleeding, severely injured. I managed to bandage myself up to stop the bleeding and take some morphene for the pain, but I was still shaking like a beast and I'd lost a LOT of blood...

Benny used his blood pack on me to save me. His last one, even though he needed it. There was no way he would've done that if he was going to shoot me in the back of the head. He'd completely earned my trust by this point.

Looted on the way, killing on the way, the two of us chatting and having a laugh. Decent chap!

"The hospital's over there, I think..." The chemlight goes out, all we've got are flares and we can't see a damn thing. Off one goes, chucking it in front of us and taking a step.

BAM! A loud shot and a ricochet right next to us.

"Holy **** man, did you just fire that?"

    "omg no!"

Backing up straight against a wall, we had no idea if he was shooting at a zombie or actually trying to kill us, but we weren't taking any chances. Going into crouch and sneaking forwards, we suddenly heard it again.

    BAM.

    'Benny was killed.'

    DAMNIT.

I managed to stay in prone for ages without him seeing me, in pitch darkness. I waited for him to go straight for the corpse to loot it so I could avenge my new, selfless friend, but no dice. Assuming he had gone, I stepped up and ran, lighting a flare to see the way... BAM. Vally was killed.

    You are dead.

Everything gone. Tomorrow, I start anew...

Joining up is tricky. No way to choose a spawn point and largest map of any game I've ever played. we will have to use landmarks. Anyway best to lone wolf it for a bit to get the hang of things but I'll post my Skype here. Basically you have to agree on a server to join. All a bit old school.

                My top starting tips:
Get bandages water and food. They are way more important than ammunition at the start.
If you are prone then you can crawl very close to Zs although the new line of sight mechanic may have changed this. Not tried it yet.

Yeh good point. Well I'll at least join your game world if I can to begin with and after I've survived for days and taken half the population out, you can join up with me so you're a bit safer!

The more I read about this the better it sounds though.I want to hear more stories from the game though to get me hyped up. I'm just surprised theres not alot of activity in this thread of people playing it.

Too busy playing it. That said I haven't played it in far too long, I'll get back on it today. Diablo and Dota 2 pulled me away.

Totally cant get this working. Spent about 2-3 hours tonight trying to run it with nothing but problems.

Wither get the waiting for character to create screen or loading screen. Then eventually loaded a game and it's running at about 5FPS! What is going on!!

I watched a review of this on Good Game, an Aussie game show here on ABC.

Looked very interesting and looked to me like a massive Left 4 Dead esque experience but with more emphasis on survival. I must say for everything it lacks in it's current form is shows masses of potential. I know its' only a mod but my guess is given how much recognition it's getting there is the possibility it will get picked up and funded by a bigger entity who wants to fully realise the core game?

Anyway... I dont PC game per se, but given the originality of it this is one that definitely interests me.

I did have a 5fps game last night too. Something must have gone wrong lol!

Use that 6 launcher /updates thing. Keeps everything up to date

What spec is your pc rossco?

It is annoying in that a couple of weeks ago after jumping through hoops for a couple of hours over and over having to re-install it (as these guys still haven't fixed their install scripts to work properly on Steam), I can also run Arma 2 fine but Day-Z I'm getting low frame rates, somewhere in the teens.

Yeah I used 6 launcher and have tried launching the game through that and through the Arma 2: AO menu as well. Either get black screens, slow fps, locked at loading screens or empty worlds with no items, people or zombies.

My pal had the same problem last night so I'm hoping it's just a one off as I'm desperate to play this even more now.

Playing on my laptop as I'm working away right now but it's a decent i5 with 4GB ram and can't remember what GPU exactly but it runs and other games at 1080p a dream so that's 100% not the problem.
