The CPU specs required for Arma 2 are beyond those of normal modern games. However, it probably isn't the issue. Try playing the Arma 2 game single player first in order to get your graphics settings right.

Once I got onto a good server last night I was back at 60fps as usual.

I know it can be frustrating but that is the price we must pay for playing a mod that is being developed while we play it. Basically it got too big too fast. Personally I'm prepared to put up with the aggro.

There are particular launch arguments that must be present in the shortcut so make sure you read up on absolutely everything.

Arma 2 works fine. I can't even get a game to load now. There's obviously something wrog so I'm gonna have to completely re-install both Arma 2 games which I think involves deleting and redownloading them on Steam.

I have followed all the steps on the Day Z forums for Steam installations:

      STEAM INSTALLATION

      1) Download both ARMA 2 and ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead through Steam.
      2) Run the game once before proceeding.
      3) Download DayZ Mod files. http://armafiles.info/dayz/
      4) Make a folder named "@DayZ" in your Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead directory.
      5) Inside "@DayZ" folder create another folder named "Addons". It should look like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\@DayZ\Addons
      6) Unpack all DayZ Mod files in the "Addons" folder.
      7) Go to Steam and right click Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead, go to 'Properties', 'Set Launch Options', add "-mod=@dayz -nosplash" without quotes in the target line and click OK. You can find other launch options, like windowed mode here: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2...Parameters
      8) Run Operation Arrowhead and select "Launch ARMA 2: Combined Operations" to play the game.

I've also installed the Beta update and made the change to the target path for the file that you are supposed to do.

Infact, while writing this reply, I tried again and it worked by running the Beta Patch file itself. No-one in the game was responding to my chat though so not sure if it was empty or not. I walked about for ten minutes then got killed by zombies. Maybe I will persevere and see if it is working properly or not now.

You want to use , and . keys in-game to change your channel to Group Channel, or Global Channel. People will see you typing then.

I haven't played this since the last patch, but when you spawn, the game should tell you where abouts you are. That's the ONLY indication you get. It should be somewhere on the coast or by water.

Use this map - http://www.maplib.net/fullmap.php?id=14237 - to find out where you are, and find your way to the nearest large town.

It could be a slight trek, and you'll stop off at smaller towns along the way, so obviously with no weapon make sure you're being super cautious whenever you hit a town.

If people don't identify themselves as friendly on sight (via Global chat), I shoot them. Better safe than sorry, and silence is as good to me as saying 'No I'm going to **** up your day'.

Cool I'll try that then. Need to make sure I'm actually in a game with people before I start running about.

But I did have an error come up saying various files hadn't loaded while I was in that game so I dunno what's going on. I didnt even spawn with any gear at all which was weird. I don't have the time right now to sit and mess about with mods like this unfortunately. I really wanna play it too!

Have you tried using the launcher from www.worrom.com? That's what I use - automatic updates and beta patch launcher.

I cant remember. I'll need to try it again tonight.

When joining a server do you need to pick one that matches your game version as you can see different ones all the time. The whole thin is just confusing and annoying. I've got no patience for Alpha testing

If you use the launcher I mentioned it will auto put you on the latest version of everything and then display the up-to-date server with a green marker.

I swear this is just broken for me. I managed to start a game but can't put down the flashlight. He constantly runs about with it aimed. Haven't found any loot anywhere or came across any people. And zombies have just ran at me out of forests without possibly being able to see or hear me. It's just weird. Really wanna give it a chance as I've heard so many good things but I've wasted hours this week trying to play it and have yet to get anything back.

Currently redownloading everything from scratch and I'll try again tomorrow maybe. If no luck then, I may just wait a good while until a more stable version comes out.

Edit: Also, how do you apply your bandages or painkillers? Confused!!!

Finally managed to get some game time in on this and I am liking it. Struggling to find many people to team up with though. Had my latest save going for about 2 hours maybe now and havent came across one person yet! But I have killed a decent number of zombies and survived a few scares. Except now I'm holed up in the town called Dolina with broken bones, no morphine and a hell of a long way to the nearest hospital so don't know what to do. If I could get someone to come help me then I would but none of my friends have this and no-one answers my call for help on the chat!

Ok this game needs to be bumped in the main first play thread again instead of under the article.

Having just joined the game no more than a week ago I'm trying my lucky to survive but my god is it unforgiving but I love it.
I'll let more experienced players describe its current state but if anyone hasn't at least given this ago you're missing out big time as far as gaming goes.
Best survival game ever? Even in its early stage!

Probably aware but anyway, DayZ is confirmed as coming out as a standalone game

No-one playing this at all? Find that really surprising. Got into it again a bit this week. Just had my longest game yet where I survived about 3 hours!

I actually bought a PC to play this. I have it installed and all patched up. It is fricking hard as you start off with nothing and the realism is spot on (zombie apocalypse notwithstanding). I'm using a single player mod just to get used to it and have watched a few YouTube vids.
Supplies are few and far between and the only weapon I have found so far is an axe.
I gave it a 6 purely on first impressions.
