Guess I'm one of the few who will be keeping their original console as well? I plan on using both so no faffing around with system transfers for me.

Did you Ouendan that DSi? A combination of Ouendan, Ouendan 2 and Elite Beat Agents took its toll on my first DS screen eventually, with no protector. It was a slow process and generally the screen held up really well all things considered but I'm now wary of the punishment that can come from rhythm games.
Actually on that, I find the feel of this new stylus kind of scratchy on the screen. The plastic doesn't feel great so maybe the older stylus was just smoother. Still, all the more reason for me to get screen protectors. And yet I can't find good ones.
The Hori ones don't seem to be available here and I'm wary of ones I don't know as quality can vary massively. Anyone have any recommendations for XL protectors?

The only ones I have seen are on Ebay, not sure on the quality though, seems he sold loads. They do seem hard to get at the moment though.

Had a go of this after picking mine up on Friday. The red model looks completely lush and is easily more comfortable to hold than the old model. There's not really a lot to say, it's the same system but bigger. As far as complaints about the 3D effect flicking off for some people that will never change. For me, it's exactly the same as it always was, perfectly fine. When I'm playing I don't move about as I play anyway so the 3D effect is flawless. I will say that the effect seems better with the XL, not because there's any difference in tech but because the screen image is bigger your eyes can take it in more fully instead of it looking like your looking into a small window. I bought Ace Combat and Mario Kart 7, downloaded Mighty Switch Force too. MSF works well and looks nice, Ace Combat is good fun too.
To anyone still bemoaning the lack of 2nd analogue I'd say be careful what you wish for. Apart from being completely unnecessary, the 3DS and XL have proven to me once and for all that the dual screen clam shell design of the system means a 2nd analogue would be uncomfortable to use as hell no matter where you position it without extending the sides like the add-on does.

Went with Red myself ... very nice .. I actually prefer the finish to the XL, no fingerprints and in all honesty it doesn't look any worse than the 3DS.
The screens are absolutely massive compared to the original, its only when you put them side by side you appreciate the difference. The graphics on the XL don't look as sharp as on the original but that's to be expected, otherwise I am loving it.
The only thing that I seemed to have noticed is that the speakers do not seem as loud as the 3DS ones, however the surround effect is more pronounced, so its a trade off I guess. However if you thought the 3DS wasn't loud enough, then the XL will disappoint even more in this area. Personally it doesn't bother me, and the surround effect is a lot better which is probably due to the separation of the speakers.
System transfer was a piece of piss, but its going to depend on whether you are moving over the SD card or not. I had a 8GB card in the 3DS so I was moving that over anyway. If you are moving the SD card as well then there are no issues, if you are not then you will need to copy everything on the existing card on a PC and then copy that to the new card. However not sure how easy that is. Saying that the actual process is still finicky at best.
Well worth picking one up though
