Yes, the ship appears to have been retconned for Halo 4. In Halo 3 it was a Charon-class frigate which was a fairly distinctive design but in Halo 4 the ship has changed, it has a much larger more streamlined central design with the hangar and engines moved into the main superstructure rather than hanging off it. It also goes from a derelict wreck to mostly functional, no explanation is given for the new Forward Unto Dawn.

Probably the same reason that grunts and jackels changed shaped that Master Chiefs Armour is different and that Cortana also looks different

The Covenant in Halo 4 are a different group to the one in Halo 3 (the rogue Covenant elements in Halo 2 were also different to the standard Covenant troops) and the rather weak reasoning for the new armour is it's been upgraded by Cortana (and herself presumably). Nothing is refer or implied as to why the Forward Unto Dawn is a new ship either officially or unofficially

            Artistic license?

I can see where you're coming from buddy, but I just put it down to different interpretations of the same lore. I figure most of the changes were to support the first level, Bungie didn't have the same considerations to make when they ended the original trilogy.

You'll like the trivia part John , Trivia On the lower part of the bow there is a black 7 inside a yellow star with a yellow chevron under it, this being one of Bungie's 7 references. All the frigates in the level The Storm use the same textures as Forward Unto Dawn. Forward Unto Dawn has fifty Archer Missile pods: two behind its bay, two in front of its bay, two on both sides of its MAC gun and one on each side of the thrusters. Other source credit frigates with 30 pods. Forward Unto Dawn is one of the many main ships, UNSC Pillar of Autumn, UNSC In Amber Clad, and UNSC Spirit of Fire, to be destroyed, or critically damaged, at or near the end of the game. In the level The Ark players may be killed by the flying debris caused by the frigate's approach (Covenant wraiths or other vehicles). The Forward Unto Dawn, along with the UNSC Aegis Fate and all other frigates seen in Halo 3, have much larger underside hangar bays than their counterparts seen in Halo 2 and Halo: Reach. However, it could be like the D77H-TCI Pelican, being a newer larger model. 343 Industries stated that the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn will have an important part in Halo 4. They also stated that you will revisit the Dawn in the Halo 4 campaign. In the trailers and released pictures from Halo 4 the Forward Unto Dawn is seen to have received a major retcon to its design. A new hangar is visible on its sides and much of the original appears to have been removed. It is unclear if this will create continuity errors due to the canonical placement of the hangar in Halo 3. Despite being severely damaged and left adrift and exposed to space for four years, much of the Dawn's equipment (such as weapons, sensors, and artificial gravity) is functional when the Master Chief awakes in Halo 4.

Not sure why you're posting that, if you scroll down they also mention the different ship and the fact there's no explanation official or unofficial for the new ship. Initially from the marketing material (there's a Mega Bloks model which shows a full view of the new Forward Unto Dawn although it's still listed as the old class designation) I assumed it was a new design named in honour of the old ship as the new version has a similar design to Infinity but now it turns out it's meant to be the same ship. The game is littered with retcons some of which make sense, many of which do not particularly the ones that are not explained in any way all of which is strange given the amount of time and effort to build up the franchise - it feels like a reboot in some ways. Quite a few here seem to think it's pointless to expect any sort of decent story in a game but I disagree and think at the very least they could produce something that avoids overused clich?s particularly when the same ones were used in the previous game.

Im posting it could you said it was a different class of frigate, its not, its the same ship, as riskbreaker said its artistic licence, 343 probably again wante to put their own stamp on the game and not be accused of just using textures and models that Bungie produced. I feel your being pretty pedantic over very small issues and not giving 343 the credit they are due.

It is a different class of ship, you even posted the trivia that details this - the Halopedia article refers to the old ship's class, not the new one. The new ship doesn't resemble any of the frigate classes at all as it has a new shape, size and design. The entire class clearly hasn't been retconned as the older frigate design is seen escorting the Infinity with the separate modules outwith the main hull rather than integrated into a larger design. So if they were wanting to not use Bungie's work, why use it elsewhere? All the the other USNC ships bar the Infinity are the original Bungie design as are the Covenant vessels.

The Forward Unto Dawn is a minor point but that sort of issue occurs throughout the game and to be honest I don't know why you are having this discussion because you clearly don't have any interest in this side of the game, at least going by your earlier comments where you claimed the story was simple and had no major plot developments when the game significantly rewrites the Halo backstory. 343 industries are certainly not due credit for their story telling or scripting, it's just absolutely horrendous - even putting aside the mistakes and inconsistencies, it's the same drivel as has been used in previous games.

I wonder how many more times we are going to have the same tired old scenario with a doomsday weapon that surprise, surprise the timer/remote detonator breaks yet again. Halo 4 is even worse for this because they have the most powerful warship they've ever built fully operational and lined up with the superweapon even showing the Infinity could easily penetrate the Composer but no, they send a lone soldier in with a dodgy bomb.

343 industries do deserve a lot of credit for Halo4, the audio and visuals are just stunning for what is now a comparatively ancient piece of hardware and much of the work done to flesh out the universe is extremely good. But it does make it all the more frustrating they can't be bothered with the storyline in the games themselves despite them being headline part of the series. Just a shame they didn't copy more of the gametypes from Reach rather than the dodgy parts of the scripts.
