Finally changed the disc in my WiiU from Sonic Racing to this! Only about 2 and a half hours in - but so far it's good.
First thing is I'm so glad it's set in London - It's a nice change of pace to always having everything set in the States...
The game is actually pretty similar to a Metroidvania, in that you collect equipment which allows you to gain access to other parts of the city as you fight to stay alive. Story thus far has been kept to an absolute minimum, your a survivor in a city full of the undead, now survive! I assume the story will unravel and be part of something larger, but time will tell. What little story there is has so far been told via the games mysterious guide, 'the Prepper' and various newspaper articles scattered across the city.
ZombiU is generally linear, you'll always know where to go and the way to getting there is a singular path, though some exploration will be required as entry to a new part of the city will mean a lack of a map, but you'll always have an idea of the general direction. ZombiU does offer side quests, but they really only act as a means to bolster your supplies - though you'll probably need to go on a few of these runs, especially if you die twice in quick succession and weren't able to rescue your gear from your previous survivor.
This brings me to the crux of the gameplay. You play a generic survivor and as soon as you die that survivor is dead and you'll take control of a new survivor - effectively just re-spawning in your safe house. You'll gather missions from 'The Prepper' and go off on your adventure.
Be warned. ZombiU is a tough game. You'll need to play the game methodically and cautiously if your going to survive. Frequent use of the gamepad is required to scan the area for movement and supplies, mark them on your map and navigate the area. Combat is slow and requires understanding of your tools and environment. The cricket bat will be used a lot especially to tackle small numbers of zombies, the swing is slow and deliberate so you'll need to learn it's timing, how and when to evade and strike. Guns can be really useful, but ammo is really at a bare minimum so you'll need to plan where you use it.
The game sets an excellent atmosphere, it will definitely get under your skin. I'm really enjoying the game overall, there really isn't anything else like it on the market. It's definitely a return to a more old-skool style of gaming and certainly a return to survival horror of sorts with a modern twist.
It's probably the most interesting game on the system so far and I'm certainly looking forward to playing more!
