    Fantasy Life [3DS] review

School, work and the usual Animal Crossing daily tasks have been keeping me away from this recently, but from what I've played it will take a huge wodge of time to play through to vague completion (if such a thing exists).

So today is the day you choose your "Life", a.k.a. you vocation in the game. You can change later on and there are 12 different jobs to to choose from. I decided to go with Lumberjack as a homage to AC. 4.5 hours later and I've finished the prologue chapter. I kid you not. Barely scratching the surface has revealed a game I'm very much going to enjoy. As a lumberjack I go into the woods each day, chop down a few trees and then sell them at the factory to make money to live. You can buy further furniture for your room and arrange it as you like, or upgrade your tools.

The world is viewed from a very Zelda-like 2.5D, with L and R swinging the camera around your character. For my lumberjack, A is the normal axe swing and X is a power swing. Both of these decrease the stamina of your character, X more so. However, finding the "sweet spot" on the tree makes a big difference to the amount of damage each swing does, the closer to the sweet spot, the higher the damage and the quicker the tree get felled.

The game revolves around getting both getting happy and rich. Gaining happiness will give you a choice of one of a slew of extra features, like a horse-riding license for example. Getting rich is all about the money of course. To this end, there are also in game achievements which boost happiness. These are everyday job-related things, like "cut down 5 trees"; "sell 10 pieces of wood". A big part of the game is also taking care of the wishes of the villagers, be they about slaying monsters or selling food items. More happiness also levels up your character, giving more techniques etc. to do your job better.

This is definitely a long haul game, with 12 different jobs are their associated skills to acquire. There's not much of a Story but it doesn't really need it.

Yup, it's a "buy" from me

Gameplay is mainly action but the quests people give you mean I can't say more than 4/10 for import-friendliness. I may knock out a guide to the quests at some point but I've really not got time right now.

I was enjoying some of the free-roaming play earlier and found it a little annoying that there are things I can't do as I don't have the necessary skill. I went into a cave and there were lots of crytals I could mine...but I don't have the skill to do it. I guess Rune Factory has me spoilt in a way. I did use my dagger and take out some sheep, bees and catepillars, then sold my loot in the town the following day. I have the horse-riding license but don't have a horse so I think I may aim for that soon. I got in some more logging too and am now up to level 4. Not bad for a days work.

      Edit::

I was just reading on the main website that Level5 is planning to release a paid update to add network multiplayer to the game which would make a big difference I think. There are also extra quests and other DLC coming, with an update already on the eShop (no details of what that does but I'll be grabbing it when I get home).

Alright folks! This is now (or shortly) half price for the download version on the J-eShop. Then the paid update which adds a huge stack of extra quests, online multiplayer AND screen capture function is 2000yen and out in 2 months.

I'll start posting my own screenshots when that drops

Still don't know if it's the regular version or the updated Link, the latter having online coop.

So as someone who has totally burned themselves out on animal forest games is there enough different in these games to make it worth getting i see that you actually battle RPG style whch is a plus. Watched a few of the uk release trailers & it looks kind of fun.

It's action RPG all the way, although I've just spent the last few hours working on my mining and blacksmithery skills. I'll be moving to carpentry this morning so I don't have to buy wood.

As of right now, I've only played 2 chapters of the story, gotten 4 of the 12 life skillsets started and have played over 25 hours. I have lots of quests not completed yet and have barely started exploring the second town.

I regret not putting more time into this before now. But I say that a lot.

Link means we could play online together, it also adds screenie taking ability (2D only sadly) and extra quests.

I'm quite excited about this release, I'm pretty much burned out on Animal Crossing but could easily get into this. Does it run on a real time clock?

No, each day is a set length and doesn't affect anything other than the enemies out in the field.
In other news, I'm probably moving to Alchemist next rather than Carpenter but we'll see.
I'm also tidying up the end of the 2 story chapter as and when I can find the right people...

That's good news for me then, while I loved Animal Crossing I hated the feeling of things being missed when you went as month or so without playing, at least this game I can dip in and out without consequence.

                              EDIT:

Done a little digging and there is a nice Treehouse episode on the game that goes inot a little more detail on some of the gameplay:
