Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Official Site
*PS3 version tested*
For those that don't know, you assume the role of once maligned central role character in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, who becomes the-internets-nerd-rage-public-enemy #1 because you didn't get to control Snake. He then turns into a cyborg ninja, and then it becomes a shame you didn't get to control him in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Until now.
So skipping a forward we see Raiden in some unknown African country riding V.I.P. with this African President. Talking about Private Military Corporations (as you do) and without spoilering it too much, they get ambushed by a rival PMC, which sets up the game.
But then again, when did story become a selling factor in 3rd person combat-action games.
(Bear in mind I've completed a few chapters, with a couple of hours on the clock)
The public demo stage is chapter #2 and starts off pretty much in similar vein, and is roughly half of the chapter. But unlike the demo, a lot of the skills are not unlocked, so you have to earn BP (battle points) which you attain the the usual manner, by killing stylishly/ getting Zandatsu/ getting 'S' ranks, and when the chapter finishes you can spend away. The same goes for unlocking extra segments of health (which can also be found in locked chests) and Zandatsu meter upgrades.
Going through on Normal (yeah, so sue me) just mainly to get a feel for the controls and buffing up my skills to go into hard mode for new game +
The normal cyborg soldiers are quite placid in terms of aggro, as you would expect, since they're just cannon fodder for easy Zandatsu. It's not until you hit the Irvings and advanced soldiers and other UG (Un-manned gears) that you'll have to time multiple parries and whatnot. I haven't amassed much weaponary as of yet as I've only just beat
as when you equip boss weapons, they assume the triangle/ Y button, and Square/ X will always be Raidens high frequency blade. Of course, as you're spending BP to upgrade Raidens blade moveset, the same goes for weapons gathered from vanquished bosses. It's just a shame there's no 'divinity statue' a la Devil May Cry to customise Raiden mid-game. If you do, you'll have to restart your last saved auto-checkpoint, which is usually quite frequent.
Until I unlock a few more move sets I'll hopefully update, but as it stands it's very free flowing, especially going from: mid combo into perfect parry into Zandatsu finish.
Second blog entry:
Having disposed of
which was a really fun boss battle I must say, without wanting to turn this into a East Vs West argument (but I am anyway) is that the Japanese always hit the mark with epic flowing boss battles. Compared to DMC (which really had one standout boss in the form of Bob Barbas) Ninja Theory are woefully behind.
Unfortunately another by-product from the Metal Gear Solid series carries its legacy in the form of codec cutscenes, where Raiden talks to mission control via his headpiece. Be warned, they are quite frequent. Luckily they can be skipped. Segue-ing from that, the animated cutscenes are batsh*t crazy as well, with Raiden running from fired missile to missile and slicing a Metal Gear Ray in half, amongst other things.
Dear diary entry #3
Well, done and dusted.
spoiler alert for my end-game stats 'Normal' playthrough.
And a breakdown of my first run, stage times per chapter:
Overall, it's a worthwhile KojiPro/ Platinum Inc collaboration. Some very nice boss designs and decent set pieces. However I felt during chapter R-05 until endgame it was losing steam and slightly rushed towards the end. Still, it's all about the combat and in that it's great when you parry everything in sight and slicing cyborgs into extinction.
For those that want a sterner challenge, you remember the 'Konami code' right?
of course you do.
High Frequency Blade (base combos)
Square (repeatedly) - unlimited light attacks
Triangle (repeatedly) - unlimited heavy attacks
Triangle (pause) Square, Triangle

Cyborg-splittingly-good:
- Great combat
- Fluid controls
- Perfect Parrying
- Boss Encounters
Zand'ohsu:
- Quite a lot of Codec calls
- It loses its intensity towards the latter quarter.
- Camera can be quite unweildly at times.
Now, to farm for more spines.
