The car handling is great, but landing the plane was a mare - until I read the message about putting the landing gear down first.

C'mon, Dave, you've changed your mind over the year and you're dismissing a game you've not played yet!

        Can't we like different things?

You like mastering intricate control schemes in the same way others are enjoying exploring a vast sandbox world and all its toys.

I couldn't remember if you loved or loathed Diablo III.

Just swap that for Kid Icarus and re-read the post, then.

              But that's 2012...

Everyone is allowed at least one game per year for GoTY.

                The middle one for me.

I'm enjoying GTA the more I play it but I don't even think it will mak. my top 5.

I've just done the prep for the second heist.

Stolen the sub and the helicopter

but then got a call saying come and meet here which set me up on another mission where I've first got to collect a load of stuff before I can do the mission proper.

                Did the

                yoga mission last night too

. It raised a smirk but didn't make me

GTA V is GOTY for me, but then again I'm a total GTA fanboy, it was always going to take the spot. Last of Us and BioShock were good, but overrated in my opinion, haven't even finished LoU yet...

No QC. No. There is only one type of game that is good and that is a game which requires mastery of complex combat and control mechanics. Every other type is **** and you are wrong if you like it. WRONG.

I have no words for this. Think about what you just said.

Last of Us is my GOTY. Regardless of how good GTAV is - it's been done before over and over, LoU is something (EVER SO SLIGHTLY) different.

I've played through over 90% of it, so I think I'm qualified to judge what I think of the game.

You haven't played GTA V have you? Yet, you can say it's been done over and over? Okay.

I don't know if I agree with that Speedy. The thing about Last of Us, it's a decent game with decent gameplay, married to fantastic graphics and a great story (with all that entails - engaging characters and a good script). But to me its extreme linearity and relatively shallow gameplay means that it doesn't really make the best use of videogames as a format. You could've told the story of LoU with a movie or short story and it would have been perfectly adequate as a medium.

Whereas GTA V is one of those games - and I stress this is my opinion - that really fires my imagination, a bit like Elder Scrolls or Persona. I feel like I AM the character, I want to do appropriate things, and I've got the next three or four things I'm going to do all planned out in my head. It's that unique sense of agency that only games can provide that I really really love. I'm the type of person who won't fast travel in Elder Scrolls or google the correct answers to questions which affect stats in Persona, because for me I get very involved in playing the role within the game.

It's a rare game that provides that feeling for me. And that's why it's my GOTY. P4G would give it a serious run for its money but I got it in November 2012.

I see what you're saying. I think the problem I tend to have with GTA games is following the narrative. I'm really bad at following a narratives and quite honestly I don't have an issue with linearity at all - I sort of prefer it for being more efficient in terms of play time.

And no, I've yet to play GTAV despite a copy being in my house. I never really click on the same kind of level you describe wakka, which I why I think I've had a hard time getting into Persona 4. I'm hoping moving from the PS2 to the Vita makes it more accessible for me though. I did click with Skyrim but I always reach a point in those games where I feel like there's a redundancy in what I'm doing to a degree that makes me drop the game entirely.

I guess it's not just GTA that I have this kind of stigma with either, I've overlooked so many of the "blockbuster" releases this generation that there's no way I'll be looking at next generation before I've played most of them. The entire BioShock series for one.

Overrated is a term that I wouldn't really like to use with any good game. People call Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII overrated, but I guess that is from the perspective of someone that doesn't enjoy those games.

I thought The Last of Us wasn't a gameplay experience that was hugely familiar (haven't played the Uncharted games), had really nice combat mechanics along with story and a great ending. If anything I'm disappointed that there may be follow up games to it, reduces the impact the ending had. I feel the ending of a game is important which was the catalyst to my response to Guts. I think I brought this up in another thread but I feel someone should complete a game to properly rate it, so I assumed magazines did this but others assumed otherwise.

I think I'll certainly really enjoy GTAV when I come to it but I'll always be comparing it to previous games, the likes of Saints Row and other open world titles in a way that probably isn't all that favourable to it.

Gaming tastes I guess, and ignorance on my part.

^One thing, did you say GTA has been done before?

Well for me this is the first GTA game were the missions are not only great instead of a bore, but are actually the best part of the single player experience. Effectively making this the first time they have got GTA right and the game has lived up to it's potential.

I played some of LOU, and as another poster pointed out it was very linear and it's story could have been just as well told in another medium. Imo it was pretentious attempt at emulating a film/drama rather than an successful interactive videogame experience.
