Well, I haven't played it. It could be the best thing since sliced bread! Small stuff like chucking a brick at an enemy to stagger them and then smashing their face off with a plank of wood is what made LoU for me gameplay wise though.

People have different tastes Dave. Some people love watching movies but mostly enjoy popcorn blockbusters and action comedies. Other people love watching movies and and mostly enjoy dialogue-driven indie and foreign films. Other people love watching movies but mostly like anim? and science fiction.
It's not wrong to have deep and complex mechanics as your number one priority, just as it's not wrong to prioritise a deeply rich and involving game world.
Originally posted by speedlolitaI thought The Last of Us wasn't a gameplay experience that was hugely familiar (haven't played the Uncharted games), had really nice combat mechanics along with story and a great ending.
I'd agree with that. The gameplay is sort of a lot like Uncharted but with survival horror leanings (and I stress leanings) though, so I think you would much more clearly see its antecedence if you'd played those titles.
Originally posted by speedlolitaI feel the ending of a game is important which was the catalyst to my response to Guts.
100% agree. The fact is, most games have **** endings. Like, really ****. Luckily you've presumably been challenged somewhere along the way in order to finish it (or if you haven't, you've at least shown perseverance) so you can draw satisfaction from that despite a typically short and unfulfilling ending.
Where LoU differs is that, for me, it actually had an ending that delivers. If you've played 90% of the game you've really not played the game, as it's one where narrative is absolutely paramount. For me it was actually only the last 3 - 5 hours that I really thought were top notch. Oh, and the opening.

Re: the video- The gameplay is great in GTAV.
Cars, planes, Helicopters, characters, weapon switching etc... all feel satisfyingly different and responsive in a perfect semi realistic/arcadey way.
I think the reason sometimes people don't mention it first when describing why GTAV is great, is because it is not one of the aspects of the games greatness that immediately comes to mind.
That's not to say it's not an intrinsic part of what makes the game great though. It's just because the game world is so vast and interactive it's easy overlook it. but if you took away the awesome feel that something as simple as say, a speed boat has, you would really notice it.

RE: Last of us. It does not really offer any new game play experiences. It does well to refine experiences from games it has drawn upon i.e. Batman/Manhunt/uncharted/Res. Ironically the way the game presents itself is different and is what helps it stand out.
I love GTA (not IV), I love complex Japanese action games. Win Win.

Just finished the single player. Ending was good and it's been pretty damn great all the way through.
10/10 from me. The only negative I can give it is the game is pushing the hardware past its limits. It's pretty for sure but needs to come out on next gen hardware now to really shine if you ask me.

Exactly.
It is a technical marvel on current hardware but the pop-in and occasional hiccups just show that its on the limit. I'd definitely double dip on new hardware if they got it looking more polished with the extra power. Don't really mind if it doesn't hit the fabled 1080p & 60fps as long as it doesn't waver under pressure. Also having the ability to record easy video clips of your random stuff makes another reason to upgrade.
I'm wondering if we will see the new consoles get this in June/July next year as a GOTY edition, perhaps after episodes of DLC have hit. Hopefully that will be the case and it would be nice if they allowed an upgrade path to retain previous purchases like other titles are doing for the console launches.
I guess we will see... But as a revenue earner it's an obviously wise business move to re-release it later next year.

Rockstar Games VP of creative, Dan Houser, claims that while the developer is interested in next-generation consoles, there are currently no plans to bring 'Grand Theft Auto 5' to the PS4 or Xbox One.
Unlikely and it would be very unlike Rockstar to do so. The sales gain wouldn't make a massive dent and would erode hype for GTAVI as a next gen entry and from whatever they've got lined up next from Take-Twos angle (my guess is Red Dead 3). However, after playing through this I know I'd pick it up at some point if it did happen. I suppose there's always the eventual PC version for those so inclined.

Completed story mode last night, great great game 10/10, not quite as good as Skyrim.
Would be nice to see a next gen GOTY edition with full 60fps/1080p.
But if it was not 60fps I would not buy it.
Damn, how long were the end credits? In the end I had to skip em.
Gonna hunt achievements now and look fwd to GTAOnline.

Just did the infamous
torture scene with Trevor going at it with relish.
Followed by a turgid, neo-liberal lecture
from Trevor about First World powers using torture and about the ineffectiveness of torture generally, delivered to the torture victim who he's decided now to save to get back at the FIB - even though he was happy to do their bidding only a few moments earlier.
I thought the script was pretty tight until then, but that was utter ****e. Rockstar trying to have it both ways.
