Well, I played both games briefly. I don't like the handling of the boarder in SSX, because of the automatic jump when you release the crouch button. The handling in 1080 is imo better, but... I only played the first cup on the easiest setting and I only found the last track to be entertaining. The tracks in SSX seem better designed (although I certainly hate the fact that you can get off course).

Ah well... As I only have the money for one game, I think I'll go for Viewtiful Joe. If only it was available somewhere around here in the Netherlands... ft:

Argh! I think I've been playing too much - that speed/shake/juddery thing is starting to affect my vision

      Best. Effect. Ever!

US Version comments from IGN below. 7.3 is pretty poor for a 1st party title and also it got less than MKDD at 7.9!

        Two completely different games.

        Closing Comments
1080: Avalanche is a fun snowboarding game that you'll probably like if you prefer speed over tricks in your downhill experience. That's basically what it boils down to, really, for this title's sense of speed is very satisfying and its avalanche elements make for absolute frenzied entertainment.
I have to say that I'm disappointed that more advancements weren't introduced to the series. The sequel sometimes feels as if Nintendo handed NST a template to work with and didn't allow the developer any freedom to stray from the formula. You know, the original 1080 was great for its time -- one of my favorites -- but five years later games have advanced, trick systems have advanced, and to see such a similar, relatively shallow trick system in this sequel is a wee bit puzzling. And yet, my issues with a lack of innovation in certain areas noted, I still had fun with the title, its trick challenges and all, and so I can't knock it too much.

What I can knock is the game's overall difficulty, or lack thereof. You can beat it in a couple of hours and it feels downright shallow compared to SSX 3, which serves up hours and hours and hours of entertainment. I also have some issues with the game's control mechanics and physics, which can feel too heavy and occasionally unresponsive.

This is not a perfect snowboarder by any stretch of the imagination. But I would recommend that anyone and everybody rent it to see the few, but amazing avalanche stages in motion, if for nothing else. And if you liked the first game, I think you'll probably enjoy this sequel despite its shortcomings.

        7.0 Presentation
Decent 1080-ized menus, a limited selection of options, but fitting music and a very cool way of delivering it.

        7.0 Graphics
Looks good, but not great. Varied locales with lots of background animation. Beautiful weather effects. Low-poly riders, sometimes-blurry textures, unpredictable framerate.

        8.0 Sound
Sounds solid. Runs in Dolby Pro Logic II for surround sound. Crisp sound effects. Catchy licensed music. But the sometimes-slow music doesn't always fit the action.

        7.0 Gameplay
Feels mostly like 1080 with a few improvements, a few shortcomings. Very fast. Fun avalanches. Decidedly sluggish control, weak trick system and it's way too short.

        7.0 Lasting Appeal
The main game is over in no time, but a fun multiplayer mode will keep you busy for a good while. Also features four-player LAN play.

        7.3 OVERALL:
(out of 10 / not an average)

Aye, but who seriously lets IGN decide their game purchases? We all read proper gaming sites, like NTSC-uk 8)

Quite honestly I don't think you should even consider IGN as a viable source for anything, except maybe use of bandwidth. And by quoting their reviews you are quite frankly implying a certain amount of legitimacy, which they DO NOT have.

Legitimacy no but for the comedy factor yes considering they gave MK DD (edit) 7.9 I didnt believe IGN as being legitimate then and i dont now.

Just thought other people would want to see what IGN think other than me.

They gave mario kart DD 7.9. Edge gave it 5.

The review (just like their mk:dd review) does nothing but comparisons with SSX3. Once again the main push is that there is more to unlock in SSX3 therefore it has more longevity.

IGN are pushing unlockables more than Nintendo is pushin connectivity!

                  that IGN review is buuuullllshiiiiiiiiit......
If the trick system is so shallow, how come we've been coming back with more and more high scores against each other...I, personally, keep finding new techniques and intricacies within the trick system that I didn't realise existed, why yesterday my high score was but a measly 40,000 (and I thought that was well good)---it's now 93,000...and I'm still pushing it.
As for difficulty, the first three modes were easier than I expected, but the fourth keeps owning me ...best try it again then, I guess

Thanks to those who offered help but I still can't get high trick scores. On the first stunt course I'm only getting a score of about 6000 even though I'm doing exactly what was suggested
I don't mind though, I really like the racing aspect of the game. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with the trick system ft:

I was getting scores like that before, you just need to start a spin, then grab...when you flash do another grab, another again when you flash and so on....I just practised loads on Air Make
Eventually you'll do it and slowly get higher and higher scores...I'd just try comboing just a few tricks together first, or maybe some grabs without any spins, you'll get it eventually

Bah! Can't get close to my score now I've been experimenting, but nothing seems to get more points...

RLench man, you jumping off the ramp? That's gives you a head start in grabbing...

Completed extreme too tonight... madly hard last track against...

Sounds like you guys are enjoying it quite a bit. My copy will ship from Tronix tommorrow so I should have it Monday. I'm not really into snowboarding games but after looking at the trailer and hearing from numerous impressions that it's more akin to Blue Storm, I've decided to take the plunge. Haven't heard anything about multiplayer though, is it decent?

Multiplayer is very smooth in 2-player. I haven't tried more and we--me and the missus--didn't play for long because she gets annoyed I'm so good Probably best to not focus on the "snowboarding" as 1080 is very, very fast and is all about the racing... enjoy, it's a good game

oh...and HOW?? x14 combo man...that's mad!!! (I wonder if that new character is any good in Air Make tho I don't know who he is yet...so no spoiling )

I played 3-player last Friday and it was just as smooth as 1-player, I think there's a couple of small touches that've been removed to keep it smooth, but I only noticed them cos I'm keen
It's mad fun trying to charge up your meter to take out your friends...or you could just have a clean race
