So picked this up yesterday as part of my console bundle for Xbox.
Short installation period on Xbox and off into the game I went. The first level is the same as the one in the demo (Iron Man and Hulk Vs Sandman)
The 360/PS3 versions were super impressive graphical anyway and there isn't much of a step up here beyond the increase to 1080p. Amazing Telltale games throw all kinds of really high quality lighting and post processing effects at the game which can easily go amiss if you aren't keeping you eye out for them. Quite often the overall quality of the image is almost CG like which is impressive considering it is Lego.
Gameplay wise it is fairly similar to the other Lego game I have played (LOTR) you have a couple of characters with you at any one point and you use their unique abilities to proceed through the levels, collecting and finding secrets along the way. Often you will see objects you can't damage or other things that the current characters cannot interact with. Upon completion of one of the 18 levels, you unlock it for free play mode where you can switch between unlocked characters on the fly, using specific abilities to access previously inaccessible areas or objects.
While the core gameplay is the same, this Lego game which isn't confined to the plot of a movie license has a much more engaging plot to follow and each level is much more actioned packed and full of interesting set pieces.
The game is stuffed to the brim with humour and funny moments and the attention to detail across the insane number of playable characters is worth praise in itself.
Leaving Iron Man still for a moment has him start dancing "the robot" whereas hawk eye will load up his bow then drop the arrow.
When playing as Mr Fantastic, holding the B button turns him into a Teapot, this serves no function at all, but is amusing. Speaking of Mr Fantastic, I properly grinned when I first used his ability to change into a giant pair of wire cutters (built from lego I will add) and cut open a gate, I really took my back to my childhood watching the 60's Fantastic 4 cartoon.
I hadn't really been following the game other than knowing that I want it, I was grinning like a loon the moment when you jump off the shield helicarrier and fall through the clouds falling through rings pilot wigs style towards new york. I grinned even more when I realised I was actually landing straight into the level I was playing, totally seamlessly.
I grinned even more when I realised later on that the whole of Manhatten island is actually a free roam area, which you can run riot around, stealing cars and collecting new characters and items. As a flying character you can even fly back up into the sky and return to the hell carrier.
I genuinely think that if you have even a passing fondness for anything Marvel that you should 100% buy the game, it really is a gem and will be overlooked for being a kids game.
