    Lego Marvel Superheroes 360/PS3/PS4/XBO/PC review

So picked this up yesterday as part of my console bundle for Xbox.

Short installation period on Xbox and off into the game I went. The first level is the same as the one in the demo (Iron Man and Hulk Vs Sandman)

The 360/PS3 versions were super impressive graphical anyway and there isn't much of a step up here beyond the increase to 1080p. Amazing Telltale games throw all kinds of really high quality lighting and post processing effects at the game which can easily go amiss if you aren't keeping you eye out for them. Quite often the overall quality of the image is almost CG like which is impressive considering it is Lego.

Gameplay wise it is fairly similar to the other Lego game I have played (LOTR) you have a couple of characters with you at any one point and you use their unique abilities to proceed through the levels, collecting and finding secrets along the way. Often you will see objects you can't damage or other things that the current characters cannot interact with. Upon completion of one of the 18 levels, you unlock it for free play mode where you can switch between unlocked characters on the fly, using specific abilities to access previously inaccessible areas or objects.
While the core gameplay is the same, this Lego game which isn't confined to the plot of a movie license has a much more engaging plot to follow and each level is much more actioned packed and full of interesting set pieces.

The game is stuffed to the brim with humour and funny moments and the attention to detail across the insane number of playable characters is worth praise in itself.
Leaving Iron Man still for a moment has him start dancing "the robot" whereas hawk eye will load up his bow then drop the arrow.

When playing as Mr Fantastic, holding the B button turns him into a Teapot, this serves no function at all, but is amusing. Speaking of Mr Fantastic, I properly grinned when I first used his ability to change into a giant pair of wire cutters (built from lego I will add) and cut open a gate, I really took my back to my childhood watching the 60's Fantastic 4 cartoon.

I hadn't really been following the game other than knowing that I want it, I was grinning like a loon the moment when you jump off the shield helicarrier and fall through the clouds falling through rings pilot wigs style towards new york. I grinned even more when I realised I was actually landing straight into the level I was playing, totally seamlessly.
I grinned even more when I realised later on that the whole of Manhatten island is actually a free roam area, which you can run riot around, stealing cars and collecting new characters and items. As a flying character you can even fly back up into the sky and return to the hell carrier.

I genuinely think that if you have even a passing fondness for anything Marvel that you should 100% buy the game, it really is a gem and will be overlooked for being a kids game.

Have you played LEGO Batman 2? My kids love that, but I'm worried this isn't sufficiently different to warrant an outlay until it bombs in price. The demo on the WiiU was pretty good (and I'm quite taken with each player having their own screen) but if it's a sort of basic reskinning I'm not ponying up 30 quid for it.

As usual, the handheld version is different so I have no idea what the big console version is like but the 3DS demo was awfully disappointing. Seemed to have lost the fun of the Lego games and came across as a more arena battle type thing. Characters couldn't even jump. The demo totally put me off it and didn't seem like it would be a patch on Lego Batman or the Star Wars ones.

PSVita version is fun IMHO. Linear and isometric viewpoint but loads going on without slowdown.

Glad I waired for PS4 version as the higher resolution makes the game look far prettier compared to the PS3 version.

If it's like the others, the Vita and 3DS versions will be the same. I miss the early days of the PSP versions which were the same as the bigger console games.

The consoles versions have become far more ambitious than what the 3DS can handle, that's going to be the only real reason there is a difference. I'll upload the clips I recorded later

No, the real reason is that they have a separate studio developing the handheld versions simultaneously because the main TT studio didn't have the resources to work up all versions at the same time and get them all out together. There is next to nothing in any Lego game I have seen that couldn't be made work on current handhelds by downsizing the assets, just as they did with the PSP ones - sure, they looked rough around the edges but they played great. The Vita could easily handle them and I reckon the 3DS could handle them too, just lower poly and lower res textures.

Makes sense, the main TT studio did have 5 versions to work on, makes sense that B team would be the ones dealing with the other 4 versions.

                Anyway

Here are a couple of videos

Yep. TT Fusion make the handheld ones. To be fair, they usually makes really fun games too.

I've renamed the thread, if the 3DS,DS,Vita games are different we need a thread for those versions separate to this one.

Only done the first level before putting this aside, it was brilliant from start to finish so want to dedicate the proper time to it.

The VITA one is decent fun. Its very reminiscent of Marvel Alliance 2. Isometric view with a tag team.
I put about 4 hours in yesterday. Got stuck needing some more gold blocks to unlock the last couple of levels tho

Forgot about this. Need to get it. Not paying 50 notes for it though! Need to find it cheap somewhere
