As I've completed the game once, I thought I'd share some more detailed thoughts about the game.

    Also, spoiler warning.

Overall, I really liked it. Playing it for more that 100 hours and unlike many other games (of even less than half the length) I always wished for more, and even at the 11th hour I noticed things I missed, like caves and other mini-dungeons.
I was thinking that getting back into any previous SoulsBorne game would be hard thanks to the more streamlined options and the upgraded movement...seriously, someone needs to mod a jump and the jump-heavy attack in all of the Dark Souls and see how broke they get.

One of the game's best qualities is that it makes an excellent use of its locations, even the more basic ones like Limgrave or the snowfields. Surely some elements recall not just FromSoft games but also other movies/books/comics/animes (the Haligtree citadel was basically ripped off from LOTR), but they treat them with respect, something that many other games lack. Let's say it's like Metroid Prime: you have the snow world and the lava world, but they are not just levels with slippery platforms or instant-death lava pits; you want to explore them because you know there are secrets and to see what developer came up with.
Speaking with friends we often compared how we approached new locations for the first time: for example, the first time I reached Redmane Castle in Caelid, I found it empty, with only two Leonine Misbegottens and all doors closed; that was because the Radhan festival was ongoing, probably triggered by interacting with Ranni in Raya Lucaria. Getting back to the bridge before the castle and seeing catapults firing at me was quite a surprise, and that's how all my friends first found that part of Caelid, full of fiery projectiles hurled at them.

Due to the open world nature, the difficulty curve is all over the place, and in fact for me it was nonexistent after Limgrave, because going up I completed the Weeping Peninsula and Caelid...lots of runes, lots of levels, lots of advanced equipment. For a time I could upgrade my weapons because I didn't have mid-level smithing stones, and it wasn't until Malenia and Mohgwyn Palace I found something challenging again.
Maybe it's also because horseback combat is particularly effective against everything and all enemies seem only able to see and hear you within a 5 degrees cone in front of their face...they also don't care if you backstab the guy next to them.
Some of the bosses are truly epic in execution, especially when you can ride Torrent. I honestly cannot think another way to fight dragons now, and I think the Fire Giant is not only my favourite boss battle in the whole game, but among my favourite battles in FromSoft games. One downside is that FromSoft could have really adjusted the camera for such towering enemies.

I liked how the game is never stingy with materials or items, like Stonesword Keys. Initially I thought it would have been a DS2-like situation with Fragrant Branches, but instead you end up with an excess of them, which made exploration much more enjoyables. I was also surprised how well runes dropped by enemies scaled, despite some grinding sections to equip some items. The difficulty might be all over the place (depending on how you play), but the rewards are surprisingly well-balanced.

For things I haven't liked, I'll have to start with the many repeated rooms and traps found in Catacombs and Hero's Tombs; it gave a sense of deja vu which made hard to distinguish one from the other; Hero's Tombs have some nice puzzles, but some are incredibly opaque to solve (like the Tomb where you have to destroy the chariots to progress).
Still on the subject of repetition, maybe less dragons and wyrms but more unique. And back to the subject of reuse, I don't rally like to see Bloodborne carriages in Elden Ring; don't really know why, I just find them particularly out of place.
And the last boss could have been a tad better, it's the only one I feel is unfair, piling up hard-to-dodge attacks with massive damage potential...see my previous post for detailed grievances.
There are too many status effects: sleep is barely used in the whole game, like madness, even in areas where they should be all about madness. Blood loss is way too powerful and can be inflicted to anyone no matter their armour (you would expect heavy armour to block that almost completely, like previous Dark Souls).

And finally, some story speculation: Demon's Souls with Calm the Old One ending (roughly at the same time) Dark Souls 1+2 with Link The Fire endings -> Dark Souls 3 with Dark Lord ending -> Elden Ring with Ranni ending -> Bloodborne.

Fascinating that you fought a lot of the bosses on horseback! I think most of mine were on foot, the one exception being the Fire Giant, which I alternated between mounted (to chase him when he rolls away), and on foot when I was hacking at his ankles with katanas. I returned and did another play through in the last few days and tried a few different weapons against bosses and normal enemies - the flexibility of approaches is amazing.

finished myself now, took out Godfrey with my rot dagger, the faster swings let me guard quicker while the mimic used arm katana for bleed. Couldn't do the final boss with just me and the mimic, and started to run out of patience to learn phase 2 correctly or get out of phase 1 with most of my bottles and mimic intact, so i called in player help. Still had to help out though as the finger helping me was a heavy tank build so i needed to do my part for damage while he had most of the agro (i assume using the ring for agro), still need to keep my defence for holy damage in both phases though, those holy attacks in phase 2 are nasty, a ball of energy following you around shooting smaller homing balls at you, and 2 types of homing lasers. After the win i found i could use the seed curse i'd collected earlier so chose that ending.

haven't gone to new game+, never been my thing to do for Souls games, i just like to start fresh with a new build and leave this character at the end game ready for any DLC to come. Next new start i'll do a Bow build and use some of that dragon magic by levelling ARC.

Overall i really enjoyed it, and its faults are the repetition of enemies, even though it has more enemy variety than any souls game before it, just being so huge meant seeing the same stuff, but i really do wish we didn't see the major story boss types repeated 3 times in most cases, the amount of dragons and lazy double/triple team bosses with no chemistry between the movesets, O'n'S still seems that magic Fromsoft can't recapture.

And as far as the tier listings, DS1 > Elden > BB > DS3 > DeS > DS2. Jumping should be in every game now

          I'm slightly behind you Tobal.

was bloody awful. Had to change to katana as my star scourge was to slow. Only managed to win with summons. I'm now almost at the end of the Crumbling Farum Azula ; cool looking level reminds me of the one in Dark Souls 2 with all of the dragons flying around!

Patches for Patches. The only extra step I'd like to take in his questline is a leading one before my other foot launches directly into his nuggets.

Patch 1.04 introduced a bug in which Malenia gets healed by every strike you are close to, even if you correctly dodged it.

Malenia might have been buffed, but one boss encounter has been allegedly been nerfed.

The latest Ver.1.04 patch for Elden Ring has quietly nerfed the infuriating trio of Putrid Crystalians. They are more well behaved and easier to deal with.

I didn't find that encounter particularly difficult, but then again I was rocking a pre-nerf Mimick Tear (pre patch 1.03) and a colossal weapon that made short work of their defences.

took a few tries but i did them with Oleg, let him agro the hoops git, while i took the spear down while dodging the magic user, crap fight.

Similarly, that fight was pretty inconsequential - had to really think quite hard about whether or not I even fought them. That I feel the same about some major story bosses is what's sadder still. Particularly watching the game get patched to make x harder, y easier, I kinda feel like the balance of this one really missed the mark.

                        Minor spoilers ahead.

I wish they hadn't patched anything, apart from the bugs (like the one where that NPC invader refused to spawn by the church in the madness area). I never got to experience the OP-ness of the Sword of Night And Flame before it was nerfed, but I found the flies useful against a couple of bosses, and made the Elden Beast fight quicker with Carian Retaliation - then they were nerfed too. How long before they nerf Black Blade (useful against Elden Beast and Placidusax), or Wave of Gold? One of the joys of previous Souls game has been experimenting and finding the right techniques / spells and weapons that can make tough bosses easier. It's been disappointing to see Elden Ring tinker with the balance in the last couple of patches. Why not let people progress as they wish?

I think a lot of the balance changes come from PVP, where people basically run just build and abuse frame traps and similar.
I still haven't played the game with the latest patch but the changes done to colossal weapons sound to be very good, there was very little incentive going for them before

I think my relationship with From games isn't what it was. I've had this since launch but had other games on the go. Presented with a clean slate last night I fired it up and dived in. I thought I was doing okay actually ... hacking through popcorn soldiers, wolves, dead stuff and some Dulux dog type things ... then I opened the wrong chest and ended up in HELL. Got smashed to bits, respawned, then got smashed to bits again. PS5 in rest-mode seconds later. I love these games but I do wonder if I've got it in me this time

Despite having this since launch I've only just started it. I've cruised around the first area, went into some little optional dungeon thing and beat that (got a feeling the map will be full of those, only mildly different from one another, in classic open world gaming style) and gone up the hill to the castle, where I beat the first boss.

I like it so far, although it feels a bit less pure than the other Souls games. Not as tense. But it's Souls, and it feels great to play.

I selected the Samurai, which felt like an obvious choice for me since I literally build his exact loadout (Uchi + longbow) in every Souls game I play. It almost feels like a bit of an OP way to start off, but I'm cool with it since I just love that combo of weapons.

I need to figure out how to make the Uchi Sharp, though, as I'm pouring all my points into Dex as per usual. I understand that it's called Keen in this game and there's a whetstone in the castle that will let me do it.

Looking forward to getting back to it tonight and slicing some more baddies in the castle

If you ever go back, forget fighting, just sneak and run when caught, everyone had to do that as those pawns with the homing lasers do not mess around even when you out level them.
