i need three games worth getting on a system to consider buying it. of course that inevitably happens with all consoles, but for the current gen :

ps2 - gta3, atv, wrc ... ended up trading wrc when i realised it was crap.

xbox - cant remember its not like the xbox started off with awesome games, but when i bought my xbox it came with a three games, halo and a two-in-one disc with sega gt 2002 and JSRF on it. i ended up trading halo when i realised it was crap (yes i really dont like halo, dont bother starting anything), and sega gt 2002 didnt appeal so i ended up selling that disc as well with the intention of re buying JSRF at a later date. havent got around to it yet.

gamecube - metroid prime, SMS, starfox adventures ... ended up trading starfox adventures when i realised it was crap.

          Super Famicom - FZero
Seeing screenshots of FZero on the Super Famicom in mags was reason enough for me to cut grass, clean windows, wash cars, beg relative for months to get my first ever import system... a Super Famicom with Super Mario World and FZero.

Sure, I loved Super Mario World but FZero really did it for me. I was never turned on by arcadey racers before, the sprite scalers in the arcades left me cold but from the second I saw it I knew I'd love FZero and it had to be mine.

          Nintendo 64 - Super Mario 64
After becoming a total Nintendo fanboy in the SFC days I don't think anything could've stopped me from getting a Nintendo 64 and boy did Mario 64 give me an extra incentive.

Before it came out I was torn between reading the blatant spoilers that were doing the rounds and keeping as ignorant as possible to the way the game played. I tried to imagine what it'd be like to move Mario around a 3D world for months but what I dreamed of didn't come close to the reality of a game that I still play several times a year.

          Nintendo Gamecube - Pikmin
For me, Pikmin epitomises what I love about Nintendo... this joyous little title didn't appeal to me initially but after hearing all the good things about it I decided to get a GC at launch with the intention of picking this title up ASAP.

The game itself is just amazing. It looks and sounds superb and plays like a dream. It may be a clich? but "easy to learn, difficult to master" sums it up for me.

          Sega Saturn - Virtua Fighter
It wasn't really until I played the likes of Daytona and VF in the arcades that I became more aware of Sega titles. A late starter I know but I've tried to make up for it.

As visually flawed as the home port was I still remember the day I played VF on my TV as one of my coolest gaming experiences. It's not one I'll forget and it's what made me a serious fan of Sega in the present.

          Sega Dreamcast - PowerStone
Much like I loved VF in the arcades and it promted me to buy a Saturn I LOVED Powerstone in the arcades so much I pumped a ****ing small fortune into it. With that in mind getting a DC was a no brainer since Powerstone was available for it.

To this day it's one of my favourite games on the machine and indeed one of my favourite games ever. It still looks pretty great and the gameplay, while simplistic, is just do much fun to play. It pwnZ in multiplayer too.

Xbox - Halo/Jet Set Radio Future
If it weren't for Halo and JSRF I doubt I'd have bothered getting an Xbox at all. As far as the machine design goes I didn't think a whole lot of it back in the day but those two titles were enough to make me shell out a small fortune for an Xbox.

The first time I played the Silent Cartographer I was so impressed. This was a game that I'd semi-followed since the Mac days that had finally been realised as a complete game. They literally kicked me out of Game I spent so long on it.

JSRF was another major factor in gettign an Xbox. The DC version took hours of my life and I was hoping it's sequel would too.

            Ah, the good old days...
            Starting from the top....

            Amiga 1200
Sensible soccer: The second best football game ever in my opinion. true, games of 20-0 were not uncommon once you got used to the incredible dexterity of the swerve function but for enjoyment you could not beat it, especially when sensible upgraded you to player manager and gave you transfers. suffice to say my wolves team kicked everyones arse (and no, i dont know why i picked wolves)

            Sega Saturn
Sega Rally: After falling in love with the machine in the arcade I needed it in my home. It was pure gaming crack for me and was the sole reason to get myself a Saturn at the time.

            PS1
Gran Turismo: As you might have guessed I`m a bit of a pertol head and love a good driving game. The buzz surrounding this was as intense as anything I had witnessed before and made me really curious. After playing it on a frineds machine I knew I had to have it.

            N64
Zelda Ocarina of Time: Do I really have to say why? Grand locations, amazingly realised world, play mechanics to die for and a cohesiveness that few games have matched since.

            DC
Soul Calibur: I hated 3D fighters before this. I had tried in vain to like previous attempts at combat but all had fialed in button mashing nonsense. This was the first game that I felt in control of the fighter, where I started to build up combos and moves and enjoy it.

            PS2
Devil May Cry: Mainly because it looked very very cool. The action was intense and the combo system inspired. Its very tough but that just means you have to think about what your doing and plan your attacks. Made a refreshing change from the usual walk and blast I was fast getting bored of.

            GC
MonkeyBall: Had been following this with interest for months, right up until the launch. The idea of it had appealed to me from when I first heard about it and I really wanted to play the game.

                Megadrive: Sonic

                3DO: Crash&Burn

                PS1: Ridge Racer

                Saturn: Sega Rally

                N64: Mario 64

                PS2: Gran Turismo 3

                XBox: Halo

                Gamecube: Super Monkey Ball

All the usual suspects on display and please don`t disrespect Crash&Burn, at the time it was one of the greateast games I had ever played and got played nearly every day for a year. I still rate it as a unique and beautiful experience.

                      You too?

I swear... I feel slightly embarassed standing there at demo pods, but the Halo demo sucked me in so badly that I literally stood there for what felt like 5 minutes, but what was 45! I've never done that before and haven't since, but what stopped my play was the Gamestation employee saying it was closing time and he had to turn the power off (along with an anti-MS defiant "It's not even that good...").

All fantastic games and ones which I will always fondly rember. Espically the Dreamcast because apart from the Xbox, those two consoles I brought on launch day and had the most special games for them.

These are the ones i can remember

                              Megadrive - Altered Beast

As much as peeps say its crap ill always like altered Beast, its just pure arcade fun imo

                              SFC - Street Fighter 2/Parodius

i was hooked on SF2 in the arcades, so it was a no brainer i needed a console port asap and Parodius was the game that started my shmup addiction.

                              Psone - Ridge Racer

Spending alot of my time in the arcades means i loved this and daytona. i saved for the Saturn and had the PSX for crimbo.

                              Saturn - Virtua Fighter

My personal arcade addiction, huge Megalo cab, competitions all the time at the local sega world. I needed the saturn to get my practice in.

                              N64 - Super Mario 64

Wanted the console for Killer Instinct Gold. But went into the local importer on the day after japan's release and saw SM64, handed over my cash for SM64 and Pilotwings 64.

                              Dreamcast - Virtua Fighter 3

Had this on Pre Order, JPN Dreamcast. Virtua Fighter 3, Pen Pen and July ?430
                              needed more VF loving.

                              Gamecube - Super Monkey Ball

About a month after JPN release, just wanted something new to play with, and Tronix did a nice offer to customers ?270 for console, and 2 of the 3 release titles and 1 memory card.

                              PS2 - Virtua Fighter 4

Wasnt bothered by a PS2, but when VF4 was announced i had to pre order PS2,VF4 and 2 VF4 Sticks.

                              Xbox - Emulation

Ive brought other consoles at launch like NGPC but nothing that stood out.

What were your first impressions? These two games were incredibly ahead of their time on first release... were you completely blown away or was it more the reaction to the current crop of consoles?
