Returning to an earlier point regarding Microsoft and the Xbox taking the casual market away from Sony and the PlayStation brand, I'm not quite certain this is fair. Isn't it simply a matter of inevitability? The PS2 launched well ahead of the Xbox and had already racked up masses of sales before the Xbox was even launched. Is it not possible that the Xbox is getting more attention from casual gamers because they already own a PS2 and are interested in the new thing that they keep hearing about all the time? Certainly the Xbox does appear to be the console that has the most `buzz` surrounding it atm, but IMO that's simply an indication of the Xbox's dominance of the market versus the GameCube, launched at a similar time, not the PS2 was had it's glory and has now sunk into a comfortable background position.

I don't think we'll actually really know the Xbox's success at a cultural penetration level until the launch of the next-gen consoles.

Now, if you were brought up on Jap titles your not going to like Bills mean green machine as it will house very very little for you. I was brought in near the start of the PS and the end of the Saturn so my heritage takes in all sections of the globe so maybe thats why i dont have the problem. I kinda like my xbox and i think its fair to see its brand name has been well established. In terms of units sold its even with nintendo but in terms of regognition it might be a bit ahead.
        Irrelevent.

I was bought up on Speccy games, that shoe don't fit now

The xbricks future is looking good i'm looking forward to alot of titles. Forza, Juiced, OutRun 2 and Moto GP 3 for my racing addiction. Doom 3, Half Life 2 and Halo 2 for my FPS fix. Pro Evo 4, Conker, Psychonauts, Black9, Advent Rising and Fable. All it needs is some support from more Jap companies or Microsoft can just go out and buy atlus and square and then they will finally have the jap rpg title too. It seems money can get you success.... Im' sure the race will be far closer between the playstation 3 and xbrick 2 in the eu and us regions.

Perhaps a closer analogy than the rocky 3, would be Chelsea with Roman Abramoviches billions (Bill with his Xbox) against Man United with their huge installed global fanbase (Sony)
I will ignore the gooners as their success will soon be forgotten
                  Hopefully!

Xbox defeats the point of owning a console for me, games are just ports or the same sort of games you get with the pc fodder.

xbox is the daddy for me having the majority games I want to play. The Cube and PS2 currently only have a few future titles I must play. Personal choice here tho. And I am a gfx whore.

Oh lets not forget that Sony are so much better marketing wise, I mean the Xbox might gain ground with the 15 year old computer geek market but it will never touch the highly profitable disposable income drenched mid twentys media wank market. Just aint cool enough same goes for Microsofts "mp3" player thats coming out, doesn't stand a chance against the fashion accessory iPod which is exactly what the PS2 is in a way.

I think Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony will ALL bring out some serious bits of kit next generation, but to me it's not the power, how many online punters, or even the games which decide who produces the most desirable consoles....It's what they look like under the telly and how many wires they have and dont have.

Of the 3 current big-gun consoles the 'Daddy' is prolly the ugliest, noisiest and most impractical of them all.

The manufacturer who gives me mirrored frontages, VGA output, wireless controllers, wireless LAN, cameras and microphones and the like will win hands-down with me.
Regardless of polygons or even franchises.

If all 3 consoles ship same day it's the one with the above which gets my vote.

Its obvious why the Xbox hasn`t got hardly any great Japanese produced games, so theres no point in moaning about it.

Its unfair to critise MS regarding the matter. Imo they have tried to push the system but companies like Konami Capcom and Square are so in-bed with Sony that its virtually impossible to get them to produce games for the XB.

I understand why people here like the PS2 and the GC. They both have an abundance of great Japanese software. Its hardly anything to do with the console and who makes it, its all about the games.

The XB always looked to be a console that would have problems appealing to the Japanese and the past few years have proven that to be the case.

The rest of the world. America/Canada, Europe and Australia have really embraced the Xbox. Maybe the market has changed and a console no longer needs Japanese games to succeed. If you look at the life-line of the Xbox it shows that may be the case. Xbox gamers seem happy to rave about the next U.S or European produced software and many don`t think twice about the lack of Japanese games.

With the quality of XB games and Live many gamers are having the times of their lives. If its Japanese software you require its obvious to look elsewhere for your thrills. Those that have tasted XB experience and enjoyed what they found are more than happy to enjoy whats on offer.

Xbox live is the only reason I even bother with the xbox, imo it has the most drab line up to be delivered from a "mainstream" console in a long time.

I'm in the same school of thought as Saur etc, jus not enough quirky titles that scream "fun". Also to say that it's ripping market share from Sony seems a bit... rose tinted, PS2 has all but reached market saturation, Sony know they don't need to shift anymore PS2s for the companies to carry on releasing games for it, and in turn for them to make money on every game sold.

Also with all this "2005 will be a killer year too" ain't Xbox 2 due out mid 2005? What are the chances of Microsoft wanting to carry on giving full support to a product leaking money like it's the titanic? Xbox lineup could well end up hitting a brick wall and Halo 2 will probably be the last big xbox exclusive. I'm not impressed, and I havn't been impressed since about 2 weeks after the xbox launch when I realised all them promising looking titles were wank bar Halo which was slightly above average, and Project Gotham, which I already owned on the DC. All IMO of course

quirky titles are ok I guess, but I personally prefer the big blockbusting titles, some of which have been mentioned already and are due to be released in the not too distant future on Xbox, if I want quirky I can play my DC.
But this season I shall be playing, Halo 2, Doom3, Pro Evo4, Outrun 2, Fable, DOA Online (perhaps) and most probably more, also before the end of the year I will probably reinvest in another GC so I can play RE4, the PS2 doesn't have anything exclusive I am particularly salivering after, other than GTA San Andreas, but that will probably get an Xbox release some time in the new year
