I believe that games are an art form and 'realism' does nothing to further the medium or change other people's perceptions of it. If games such as Rez, ICO, NiGHTS etc were more common then gaming would attract more people of different ages, races, cultures and backgrounds. Right now it's very much a medium dominated by products aimed at males in their 20s. This is why I believe that EA and Xbox are counter productive and would like to see the back of them.
Would games like those attract more people or would they lead to the fall of the industry? Gaming, like any market is based on supply and demand and Xbox and EA give the people what they want. It is clear from sales of EA games and the games you listed that the average gamer would rather play Fifa and Harry Potter than Rez and ICO.

It would lead to less million sellers but more games would have a chance to shine because they wouldn't need a movie license to sell. More people would be attracted to gaming and the sales more evenly spread between games thus allowing publishers to take risks instead of going for the safe option EVERYTIME like they do now. Xbox and EA give people what the want because only males in their 20s play games (the rest being children whose mums just buy the latest big license game for them eg Harry Potter). If there was no such thing as the 'average gamer' due to the diversity of people into gaming then ICO and Rez would have suceeded.

Beautiful - that's so blatantly it. I too have zero interest in buying and playing games that do nothing but emulate an experience possible in real life, games like Gradius V and Viewtiful Joe completely bury them.

Well i like both the unusual/original games like Ico yet i also dont mind a bit of realism. Does that make me soulless?
I can be playing Bujingai or super monkey ball one second then put pgr2 into xbox the next. I dont subscribe to the theory that every thing you do, every hobby you have has to fit in with how you perceive yourself. Its like saying if you listen to Akercocke you have to wear long black coats and look grumpy all the time.

I'm not claiming anyone on either side to be 'soulless' anyway, just different people.

I see what your saying and they are good points. I guess i picked up on a point and made up my own discussion .
My point would be that realism has its place. Id agree that its too dominant in the games market but i wouldnt want to see the back of the xbox or EA.

But you have openly expressed your love for Winning Eleven on this forum, which is a realistic sports game.

So how come you can enjoy a game such as this, but not any other "realistic" style of game?

Incidentally, this is a question aimed at myself as much as you as I also hate just about every "realistic" game with the exception of Pro Evo/WE (although I have been growing less and less fond of this as it has evolved).

Because one or two are OK, he said 'nothing but'... there are stacks [of "realistic" titles] on the Xbox.

                        Bingo.

I'd like to state Ridge Racer as a great example of a driving game; Ridge City is a whole new made up city, the cars powerslide way too easily and the music is stuck in early 90s dance/techno mode. The game world is plausible yet at the same time there are things about it that are too 'wrong' for it to be real. For me that makes it like a dream. I am in a fairly plausible world yet I don't feel constrained by real world limitations of motor sports and tracks. There is something about the game that is unique and special. Somebody has applied their imagination and made certain changes to racing in order to give their own interpretation. When I play Ridge Racer I am entering a new world, that of Ridge City as opposed to driving a polygon model of a real car in the UK countryside. This is an experience that the Xbox (and EA) consistently fail to achieve. EA tried to do an arcadey racing title in Shox but it failed to invoke the sort of sentiments I have for Ridge Racer.

I'm not sure if this makes sense but these are my feelings

The Japanese see many Western things as fads. Take english tea and scones, its just seems quaint to them.

At the end of the day they love there own culture more than anything. Anime, Manga and Japanese Videogames will always win-out over Western equivalents.

Its nothing the Japanese should be ashamed of but it is true. All cultures try and be patriotic and loyal, its human nature.
