Super Smash Brothers Melee, Super Monkey Ball 2, Pro Evolution 3, Kung Foo Chaos, F-Zero GX would be my ideal lineup for this current generation of multiplayer games.

Then i'd have to list Street Fighter Alpha 3, Bomberman, Diddy Kong Racing and Goldeneye for some of my older multiplayer highlights.

I'd say mariokart 64 because it brought lots of people together. As much as i loved tense games of iss, it was too demanding for most of my friends and girlfriend. Mariokart 64 was multiplayer perfection - simple to pickup and play, but still plenty of depth to let people find their own style.

        In no order:

Guardian Heroes - Excellent 2 player co-op, amazing 6 player battle mode. My fave game of all time.

Streets Of Rage 1/2 - Best 2 player games ever...

Goldeneye - License to kill, temple, crouching and slappers only is my fave so tense and requires accuracy with the analogue. You guys should try this

Saturn Bomberman - still remains the best version of bomberman to this day. Decent 2 player co-op mode and an insane 10 player multiplayer mode.

Smash Bros. - Haven't played the GC version too much, but spent alot of time enjoying the N64 version. I agree with saur, the controls are spot on, its sick.

        And of course:

Winning Eleven - the game that sold me the PS2. I'm not into football, but I don't have to be to enjoy this game, its incredible.

World Cup 90/Micro Machines : MD
          Street Gangs : NES
          Mario Kart : SNES
          Super Monkey Ball : GameCube
          PGR : XBox

Please bear in mind the first 3 are about the only games I've played on those consoles but I loved them when I was a kid.

Whoever said Settlers 2 I would almost agree with. I could never get into Settlers 2 but I had some epic 2 player battles on the original - it usually degenerated into a fight for the keyboard as no one could break the deadlock. Civ 2 was the same in this respect.

Worms Armageddon is probably the game I've played most of this type of thing - its still the best.

That, plus, the way they flip and hop when all you want to do is turn around to pick up something behind you, and you're left with something that's just ****. In my opinion.

*EDIT: Also, it's a sodding double-jump!! On the same sodding stick!! It beggars belief!!
            "X" button tbh.

I can't believe no one has said those four magical words that still evoke warm fuzzy feelings in my insides:

              Sensible World of Soccer

You can keep your slow, boring football simulations, I'll have a 20-player league of 100% proof fun please

IK+ (International Karate Super or whatever it was not in NZ)
                Syndicate Wars
                Overboard! (great laughs everywhere)
                TimeSplitters 2
Baldurs Gate/2/CoN (good for playing with the girlies)

These are the games that have gone down well amongst my mates. Basically the classics need to be accessible to both hardened gamers and casual ones, good fun, not be too serious. Afterall alcohol is usually involved, and you cant deal with a Tekki type system when fully-cut!

Super Smash Bros Melee is ****e. Super Smash Bros? Now that's a different question altogether....it's pratically perfect. Melee is just a mess.

                    But back on topic....
                    Halo?
                    Perfect Dark?
                    GoldenEye? I can't decide!

No, wait, it's got to be Street Fighter II

                        SFIII: 3rd Strike.

Nothiing gets me stoked more than 5 of you, all around the same standard of play, for some top multiplayer gaming moments.

Cheers and whoops from the crowd gaoding both players on is great fun.

And Urien is filth, and i'm only just finding this out. 2 + HP pwns you jump boyz!!

Can't say I noticed that, but then my thumb isn't the shape of a banana.

Ah man? I cant even begin to believe some of you guys are calling Super Smash Bros Melee a mess. And poor controls? Jumping with ?Up?? My god? who on earth jumps with up?! That?s what Y and X are there for?

My friend and I are pretty skilled players (im always Captain Falcon, he?s Shiek) and our matches are intense, strategically played and most importantly fun. Matches can last for ages. Each move, block, counter, dodge, and attack is significantly important to winning or losing. How anyone can say this game is a mess is beyond me. I can appreciate how it mightn't be for everyone?s tastes, but to not actually appreciate the title for the reasons expressed is quite a shock tbh?

                            heh. Ah well? Anyhoo?

Aside Smash bros, my top Multiplayer game is GoldenEye. Without a doubt.

the greatest and most unknown multiplayer game of all time is

the ice hockey game mode in multiplayer ATV 2 (the original ATV 2 : Offroad Fury, not that crap Quad Power Racing ****). the most insane fun with the best soundtrack ever.
