Oh **** me, that bit in ED made me **** my pants.

I screamed like a little girly, much to the amusement of my girlfriend who was watching me play.

The bit in RE2 in the police station where Tyrant smashes through the wall with no warning made me **** myself too. Again I screamed like a girl, had to jab the pause button and calm down for a minute or two before I could carry on playing.

Also in the RE remake, where in one of the upstairs corridors the door flies open and a Crimson Head jumps out. Again I screamed like a complete sissy and didn't stop until I legged it round the corner and into the statue puzzle room.

Cue more laughing and piss taking from the other half

That bathroom scene in ED was a scary moment, but as far as I remember it was the only scary moment of the whole game. Real shame, as that jumpy scene was done to perfection, I'd have thought they'd try similar things as the game went on.

There is a level on Metroid Prime that was pretty darned scary too, where you enter the downed space ship. I really hate underwater sections in games, I think I got 'the fear' after playing the original Tomb Raider and having to get through several sections under water.

      112, played it at E3.

Ooh, just remembered - Space Hulk, the very first videogame version on PC and Amiga (and I think possibly megadrive, not sure). Played half in realtime first-person mode, during which you saved up 'freeze time', and half in paused mode to give commands on a 2d overview map (akin to the original boardgame) which uses up your freeze time. The sight of it running out while you're desperately trying to co-ordinate your squads and the Genestealers are closing in was intense, and seeing a 'stealer burst round a corner right in front of you in the first-person view was nasty

I first played Resi on the GC, so I knew most of the scares ahead of time (dogs etc.) Lisa coming home to her cabin in the woods though, with you stuck upstairs in the bedroom really freaked me out. Running back through, knowing she was in the house but not knowing on which screen she would appear was pretty terrifying. Add to that the fact that you soon discover she can't be killed and you have a mad dash back through the woods to top it off.

Fatal Frame, deffo. I forget exactly which bit it was, but vividly remember something making me jump a foot into the air and shout "Ohmygodohmygod."

There's a clever bit in the first marine level of AvP2. You've yet to even see an alien, when one uncurls itself from the ceiling in front of you. You poop your pants and fire off all your ammo, before realising that it's actually a loose bit of piping. Bastards. (Incidentally, I absolutely loved the way the aliens controlled in the first game, but I guess it was something that you really had to practice with before it felt comfortable.)

Illbleed on the Dreamcast can freek you out quite a bit if played in a Dark room with headphones on. That game would really send the shivers down my spine at times while other times it was so comical.

Staying with Dreamcast, De-Spira has a dark and creepy feeling to it. At no point would it fill your pants but overall it will have you looking around the room to make sure you're alone.

Clock Tower on the PSX would make you jump every now and then.

The ultimate pants filler for me would have to be The RING. Play that game in the dead of night with headphones on after watching the movie (Japanese movie) and you'll soon be filling pants. That game always had me feeling a chill down my spine.

The bottom of the Research Centre in Phendrana, from Metroid Prime o_O

The bit where the lights went out and you had to work out your new visor and take down the pirates, then get past the Metroids... I don't think I've ever been so tense playing a game before. I think I actually made a little involuntary noise of relief when I got back to that massive entrance hall with the grainy sunlight filtering in.

Again, this was a dark room with much volume... the only way to play video games, in my opinion.

System Shock 2: I've been scared of psychic monkies ever since. Also the part where you first meet the computer AI thingummy was the first instance of 3D sound I'd heard on my A3D card, all these weird voice going around my head, totally crapped me up.

Half-Life: The part when you meet the tentacle monster in the rocket jet test facility. The tension created when trying to sneak under the damn thing whilst it goes mental was terrifying.

Fatal Frame: Just the whole atmosphere of this game was brown inducing, probably more so than the Silent Hill series (which is pretty scary in it's own right).

Cronicles of Riddick: The part where you first escape and you are in those dark sewers with limited battery life in your torch. Those crazy mofos scared the life out of me. Any other game it probably wouldn't have been as scary, but the lighting in Riddick made those things look so frickin' real.

AvP (Marine mode) definitely. I pretty much know the levels inside out now, but it still gets me when I go back to it. AvP did so many things that no other game has done before or since, not least of which was randomising enemy placement and behaviour. Not knowing where they are, where they're gonna be... When you've got an alien or two screaming and hurtling around in some large open, dark room, occasionally flying across patch of light where you've shot a flare, maybe taking a swipe at you briefly then disappearing again... then you shoot one and keep shooting and shooting and shooting, acid flying everywhere... you've learnt that just cos an alien doesn't have any legs, doesn't mean it's dead and can't kill you... hell, even if it is dead the acid could still take you out... Finally convinced that it's dead, you stop firing... and the facehugger you'd forgotten about leaps onto your face, screeching terrifyingly as it does so... and you have a heartattack. I've literally fallen off my chair playing this game.

AvP2 was just **** in comparision imhotbqfh. The first level was alright, then it just went rapidly downhill. The lighting wasn't as good, the level design wrong for the game, no high ceilings, garbage lighting tools, obvious scripted entrances, general lack of randomness and unpredictability, aliens only ever charge you pretty much, dynamic music gives away things it shouldn't (turn it off), face huggers aren't scary (I mean, how did they manage that?!)...
The alien mode wasn't half as good either... no way to hide and sneak, only ever charge head on, you can't play with your food, the wall climbing was broken... I could go on and on.

                        Runners up:
                        System Shock 2
                        Project Zero

It's all about the sound, danger and not knowing what's gonna happen when...

AVP, was very clever having face huggers just appear full screen when they got you. Unlike that awful alien trilogy game where they crawled up at a snails pace then took like 3 hp off or something. I also never had any problems with the alien mode and thought the wall walking controls where spot on.
